Chapter 1

The morning of my wedding day was a beautiful chaos. The pack house was abuzz with excitement, werewolves darting about, offering congratulations and attending to the last-minute details of the grand ceremony. It was the day I would officially become Luna, taking my place beside Marcus, the Alpha of our pack. My heart swelled with the anticipation of the life we were about to begin together.

As I sat in front of the mirror, my reflection was serene. My wedding dress, a masterpiece of lace and satin, hugged my body, and I gently placed a hand on my swollen belly, feeling the slight movement of my unborn child. It was a reminder of the love Marcus and I shared, and the life we were bringing into the world. I imagined the future—our child running through the woods, shifting for the first time, learning about the pack they would someday lead. It was a vision of perfection.

"Lady Luna, your hair looks stunning," one of the pack members said as she adjusted the delicate silver combs in my updo. I smiled, feeling the warmth of their affection. Today was not just a celebration for Marcus and me, but for the entire pack.

My reverie was interrupted by a knock on the door, followed by the entrance of Victoria. She was my closest friend, someone I had trusted implicitly. Her appearance seemed customary, a part of our tradition, yet something in her eyes, a flicker I couldn't quite decipher, made my wolf stir uneasily within me.

"Elena, you look breathtaking," she said, her voice smooth and warm. "I just wanted to bring a special surprise—some wedding vendors with last-minute touches."

I nodded, my trust in her unwavering. As the supposed vendors entered, I sensed nothing amiss at first. It was only when they moved with a predatory purpose that my instincts screamed danger. The scene shifted rapidly—the vendors were armed kidnappers, their intent malicious and clear.

My attendants were subdued quickly, and I found myself dragged from the bridal suite, the chaos of the assault a horrifying contrast to the joy that had filled the air moments before. Victoria stood back, her eyes dark with an emotion I couldn't comprehend.

As they pulled me away, my wolf surged within me, urging me to shift, to fight. But the child I carried within me bound me in human form, rendering me powerless against their assault. I was forced into a vehicle, my thoughts racing to Marcus, to the pack waiting for me at the ceremonial grounds, blissfully unaware of the betrayal unfolding.

The riverside cabin was damp and cold, a stark prison. Victoria's laughter echoed as she donned my wedding dress, her transformation into the bride complete. She approached me, her smile a twisted mockery of the friendship we once shared.

"Did you ever suspect, Elena?" she taunted, her voice dripping with venomous delight. "All those years living in your shadow, watching you get everything I ever wanted. It was unbearable."

Her words struck deep, cutting through the confusion and pain. I had never imagined the jealousy simmering beneath her smiles. As she moved closer, her eyes dark with malice, she delivered a swift, brutal kick to my belly. The agony was blinding, my hands instinctively clutching the life within me as she struck again and again. I was left gasping, a guttural scream tearing from my throat, mingling with my wolf's anguished howl.

Victoria stepped back, admiring her work, before leaving me behind with her hired captors. Her betrayal was complete—she returned to the pack, to my life, poised to steal not just my wedding but my entire future.

Gritting my teeth against the pain, I forced my way free from the ropes binding me. With a desperate will, I stumbled from the cabin, collapsing into the icy embrace of the river, its currents pulling me away from the scene of my downfall. As the water closed over my head, I made a vow to myself: I would survive this. I would return.

And when I did, justice would be mine.

The Autumn Equinox Gala was a sea of crystal and candlelight, the Silver City Pack's elite gathered in their finest attire. I stood beside Ronan, my fingers nervously twisting the Luna pendant that hung at my throat—the symbol of my position, my identity. "Smile, Mia," Ronan whispered, his hand possessively curving around my waist. "You're the Luna. Act like it." I nodded, forcing my lips upward. Three months as Ronan's mate and Luna, and still the title felt like borrowed clothing—too large, too heavy. Across the room, Viviana's eyes tracked our movements, her smile never reaching her eyes. "Luna Mia," she cooed, approaching with two glasses of deep red wine. "A toast to our unity." She extended a glass toward me, her perfectly manicured hand steady. Something flickered in her eyes—something that made my wolf stir uneasily within me.

The bite hurt more than I expected. I stood at the center of the Silverclaw Pack House's grand hall, surrounded by hundreds of wolves dressed in their finest, and all I could feel was the burning pain spreading from my neck. Alpha Roman Wallace's teeth had just broken my skin, marking me as his chosen mate in front of everyone. But there was no spark. No electric current running through my veins. No intoxicating scent wrapping around me like the stories always promised. Just pain. "Congratulations, Luna," someone said, their voice distant and hollow. I forced a smile, my hand instinctively moving to cover the fresh wound on my neck. The mark felt wrong, like my body was rejecting it even as it bled.

The silver moon hung low in the night sky, casting an ethereal glow over the ceremonial clearing. My heart pounded against my ribs as I stood before the entire Silver Moon Pack, my white dress flowing around me like water. Tonight was supposed to be our night—mine and Barrett's. After years of sacrifice and devotion, I would finally be named Luna, his mate and equal. The Elder's weathered hands held the ancient Luna crown, its moonstone centerpiece catching the light. "Tonight, we witness the union of our future Alpha to his chosen mate," he announced, his voice carrying across the hushed gathering. Barrett stood tall beside me, his profile sharp in the moonlight. I reached for his hand, but he pulled away, his eyes fixed on something—someone—beyond the crowd. "Barrett?" I whispered, confusion threading through me. Before I could react, he stepped forward, raising his hand to silence the Elder.

My daughter suffered a severe injury during a pack training session, and we needed the expertise of Dr. Samuels, a renowned healer, for her surgery. Desperate, I reached out to my mate, Malik, the Alpha of our pack. He responded coldly through our mind link, "I have an important meeting with the council. Handle it yourself, and don’t bother me with such trivial matters." I was left to watch helplessly as my daughter, Ella, underwent an amputation, her small body trembling on the operating table. That evening, while packing my bags, I found a receipt for a candlelit dinner in Malik’s suit pocket, along with two torn condom wrappers. His so-called important meeting was nothing but a romantic dinner with someone else, followed by more than just a few hours of pleasure. Calmly, I called my grandmother, Louise, a respected elder in the Seabrook pack. "Grandma, I’ve made up my mind. Next month, I’ll return to take over your embroidery shop." On the other end, Louise’s voice was filled with warmth and relief.

The stack of parking tickets stared back at me from the kitchen counter, their red violation stamps a glaring reminder of Adrian's carelessness. Thirty years as his Luna, and he still couldn't remember to pay his tickets on time. "Another one?" I muttered, adding the latest envelope to the pile. Our household expenses were usually meticulous—my responsibility as Luna—but these had slipped through the cracks. I sighed and reached for my laptop. "Let's get this over with." The city's violation system was straightforward enough. I logged in using Adrian's license plate number, expecting to see a few recent infractions. Instead, my screen filled with a dozen citations spanning the last three months. "That can't be right," I whispered, scrolling through the list. But there they were—parking in fire lanes, expired meters, blocking hydrants.
