Chapter 4

POV: Ione Mercer

“The phone is on the wall,” Nico said.

He pointed a calloused thumb toward a yellow rotary phone mounted beside the pantry door.

I did not move.

The engine-room explosion at 22:17 still flashed behind my eyes. Every time I blinked, orange light filled the black water. My back remembered the blast. My lungs remembered the sea.

“I do not want the phone,” I said. My voice sounded scraped raw.

I sat on a cracked vinyl stool inside a salt-stained taverna on Kalyra Island. My wet chef’s coat hung from a nail near the stove. Nico had given me an old fisherman’s sweater and a pair of drawstring trousers that were too large at the waist.

Two hours earlier, his trawler had found me tangled in the edge of a drifting net. I had been wrapped around an orange foam delivery box, too cold to release it even after he cut the rope from my wrist.

He had hauled me over the gunwale, covered me with a canvas tarp, and said only one thing.

“Breathe before you explain.”

Now he placed a chipped enamel bowl of fish broth in front of me. Steam fogged the table between us.

“Eat,” he said. “You are still blue around the mouth.”

A woman in navy scrubs stood near the sink, packing a blood-pressure cuff into a canvas medical bag. Her name was Sofia Markos. She ran the island clinic and had arrived ten minutes after Nico called the harbor office.

“You should be in a hospital,” Sofia said. “Your temperature was thirty-four point six when I examined you. You have bruised ribs, smoke exposure, and a superficial burn across your shoulders.”

“I cannot leave the island yet.”

“That is not a medical answer.”

“It is the only answer I have.”

She studied me for a long moment, then pulled a carbon-copy form from her bag. “I documented the time Nico brought you in. I also recorded your passport number from the waterproof card in your coat. If you lose consciousness, he calls the helicopter ambulance. No argument.”

I signed the clinic form with a hand that would not stop shaking.

Sofia tore off the yellow copy and left it beside the bowl. “Keep this.”

The front door closed behind her. Rain tapped the windows. The taverna smelled of lemon, diesel, and wood smoke from the old stove.

Yesterday, I had been carrying lemon-roasted potatoes to an anniversary table where my husband gave my chair to another woman. Now a stranger had put food in front of me without asking what I could do for him.

I ignored the spoon and unzipped the inner pocket of my soaked uniform. My frozen fingers struggled with the silicone seal of the waterproof pouch.

“Need help?” Nico asked.

He stayed on the opposite side of the table. He did not reach for me.

“No.”

I pulled out the recorder first. Its red light was dark, but the metal casing had not cracked. I dried it with the corner of a towel and pressed the power button.

The screen flickered.

One audio file appeared. It ended at 22:19.

“It survived,” I whispered.

I pressed play.

Static filled the empty taverna. Flames roared through the small speaker. Then Damian’s voice rose above the chaos.

“My wife is not on board.”

Nico stopped beside the stove.

The rescuer on the recording demanded a sweep of the galley. Damian ordered him not to send anyone back. He said I had already left on the port tender.

The file captured my own distant scream.

I had not heard it at the time. On the recording, it was faint but clear.

“I’m here.”

Nico’s face changed. He walked to the front door, turned the lock, and pulled the curtain across the glass.

When the recording ended, he placed both hands on the counter. “Now you call the police.”

“First I make copies.”

I opened the pouch again and removed the passenger manifest. Salt water had blurred the edges, but the black line through my name remained dark. So did the red stamp declaring that I had departed on the port tender.

Nico found an old office scanner beneath the bar. It took three attempts before the machine accepted the damp paper. We saved the image and the audio file to two memory cards. One went into the taverna safe. Nico sealed the other inside a clean bait tin and hid it beneath a loose floorboard near the pantry.

“You do this often?” I asked.

“Hide evidence from murderous husbands?” He pushed the floorboard back into place. “First time.”

Despite myself, a breath of laughter escaped me. It hurt my ribs.

Only then did I lift the spoon.

The broth tasted of fish bones, lemon, garlic, and too much pepper. It was the first warm thing I had swallowed since the anniversary dinner. By the time I reached the bottom of the bowl, my hands had stopped shaking.

“What did you see in the water?” I asked.

Nico wiped the counter slowly. “Debris. One empty life jacket. No port tender.”

“Are you certain?”

“I know every small boat registered on this side of Kalyra. No tender came through the channel after the fire.”

The lie on the manifest settled into something colder. Damian had not mistaken my location. He had invented an escape route that did not exist.

Nico switched on the television above the bar.

A news anchor stood outside the port authority building. Behind him, the wreck of the Thalassa burned against the night sky. A banner crossed the bottom of the screen.

IONE MERCER PRESUMED DEAD.

The image changed to a press room.

Damian sat beneath white lights with Sabine at his side. He looked exhausted in the precise, camera-ready way he used for shareholder meetings. Sabine held a tissue to her eyes. My orange life jacket hung over the back of her chair, my name still visible inside the collar.

A reporter asked why she had been wearing it.

Sabine lowered the tissue and looked directly into the camera.

“Ione insisted I take it,” she said. “Her last words were that I should think of my future.”
