Chapter 2

POV: Ione Mercer

“Only two spots left in this lift!” the Coast Guard rescue swimmer shouted.

The helicopter above us battered the deck with wind. Smoke flattened, rose, then rolled back across the stern in choking waves. The rescue basket swung at the end of the hoist cable, striking the boarding rail hard enough to throw sparks.

Theo locked both hands around the yellow frame. He did not flinch when a window burst behind him. He pointed at Sabine.

“Let Sabine go first.”

For one second, I thought I had misheard him.

“Theo.” I stepped toward the basket. Heat pressed against my face. “Move. We go together.”

Damian shoved past me with an orange life jacket in his hands. I recognized the black serial number on the collar. It belonged in the primary suite. My name was written inside the neck in waterproof marker because I had checked every emergency vest before our first crossing.

He threw it over Sabine’s silk shawl.

“Arms through,” he ordered.

Sabine obeyed at once. Damian tightened the straps across her chest and checked both buckles with quick, practiced tugs. He handled her with the care he had not shown me at dinner.

“There are only two places,” I said. Smoke scraped my throat. “Theo and I take them. Sabine can go with you on the next lift.”

Damian did not look at me. “There may not be another lift.”

The words stopped me.

The rescue swimmer clipped the basket tether to the deck and shouted for us to hurry. Above him, the helicopter banked away from the thickest smoke. The cable groaned.

I grabbed Damian’s wrist. “Then I go now.”

He yanked free. “Sabine is our guest. She takes priority.”

“She is your mistress.”

A crew member stumbled between us carrying a fire extinguisher. Orange sparks raced along the cabin wall behind him. Somewhere below deck, metal shrieked as the hull twisted.

Sabine clutched the front of my life jacket. A leather document case hung across her body beneath the straps.

I had seen that case before. It had been beside Damian’s plate during dinner.

“What is in the bag?” I asked.

Sabine’s hand closed over it. “Nothing that concerns you.”

Theo’s eyes snapped toward the case. The movement was small, but I saw it. So did Damian.

“Get her into the basket,” Damian told him.

Theo reached for Sabine’s elbow.

I caught his sleeve. “Look at me.”

He did.

For seven years, that face had turned toward me whenever his throat tightened after a meal. I had learned to read the first pale ring around his mouth, the slight rasp before his airway narrowed. I had fought a school administrator who called his allergy inconvenient. I had slept upright beside his hospital bed with an EpiPen in my fist.

Now he looked at me as if I were one more problem in the evacuation plan.

“Theo, take my hand.”

His lips moved, but no sound came out.

Damian stepped between us. “Stop making this harder.”

“Where is the port tender?” I demanded. “The one mounted on the port davits?”

“It already launched,” Damian said.

I turned toward the dark water. Smoke hid most of the sea, but the davit arms were visible above the rail. Both hung empty.

“Who is on it?”

“The kitchen staff,” he answered too quickly. “They left first.”

“I was in the galley. No one came for me.”

Another explosion thudded below us. The deck jumped under my feet. Sabine screamed and tried to climb into the basket without help. The rescue swimmer caught her by the waist and forced her back until he could secure the safety strap.

“One passenger seated!” he shouted. “One more, now!”

“Theo,” Damian ordered.

Theo climbed onto the metal grate.

I lunged forward. “No. He is not leaving without me.”

Damian caught both my wrists. His fingers dug into the bruises forming under my skin.

“You are embarrassing me in front of the crew,” he hissed.

The insanity of the sentence cut through the panic. The yacht was burning. The sea was rising through the lower decks. Still, his concern was control.

“I am your wife,” I said. “Tell them.”

His grip tightened.

“Tell them I am your wife and I am still on this ship.”

Sabine leaned out of the basket. “Damian, please. The fire is spreading.”

Her voice changed him. His expression softened.

“I have you,” he told her.

Then he looked at the rescue swimmer. “Lift them.”

The swimmer hesitated. “Sir, the woman says she is family.”

“She has a place on the port tender,” Damian said. “It is circling back.”

I stared at him. “You just said it already left.”

He ignored me.

The helicopter cable pulled taut. Theo crouched inside the basket beside Sabine, one hand gripping the frame and the other pressed against the leather document case between them.

I grabbed the yellow rail.

“Theo, get out.”

His face twisted. For an instant, the child I had raised broke through the fear.

“Dad said you were safe,” he whispered.

“I am standing in front of you.”

The basket lifted an inch. I held on.

The rescue swimmer shouted at me to release the frame. “Ma’am, you will overturn them!”

“Then put me in!”

Damian pried my fingers from the rail one by one. “Do not ruin this.”

A line of flame raced across the ceiling behind us. The heat struck my back.

I shoved against Damian’s chest. “Take Sabine out of that basket.”

His face went blank.

For the first time, I understood that the dinner humiliation had not been a private cruelty. It had been rehearsal. He had moved me away from the guests, away from the manifest, and into the one room nearest the engine compartment. Sabine wore my vest. Theo guarded her seat. Damian stood between me and the only rescue cable.

Every detail placed me exactly where he wanted me.

“Damian,” I said, and my voice came out calm. “If you do this, I will never call it an accident.”

A muscle jumped in his jaw.

Then he drove both hands into my shoulders.

I flew sideways and crashed into the yellow safety railing. Pain burst through my ribs. The breath left my lungs, and the deck tilted beneath me as the basket began to rise.
