Chapter 2

Clare held her father steady, his weight a heavy burden against her side. The wind cut through her thin silk slip, raising goosebumps on her skin, but she barely felt the cold. Her mind was a furnace of frantic calculation.

Edward Carlisle. CEO of Carlisle Holdings. A name that was its own currency in a city built on power.

She guided her father, who was now dazed and compliant, to a plush sofa in the building's grand lobby. She spoke to the security guard she'd pushed past earlier, her voice now calm and authoritative. She promised him double his day's pay for his trouble and for watching her father. The man, seeing Arthur Beaumont's vacant expression, nodded grimly.

Clare walked back out onto the street, took a deep, steadying breath, and headed for a 24-hour convenience store.

She needed proof.

Inside, under the harsh fluorescent lights, she grabbed a box containing a pregnancy test. The cashier, a young man with tired eyes, gave her a brief, curious glance as she paid in cash scraped from the bottom of her purse. The look made her cheeks burn, but she forced herself to meet his gaze. This was the first step. She couldn't falter now.

When she returned, Arthur had regained some of his color. He grabbed her hand, his own trembling. "Clarry, what are we going to do?"

She looked at his face, etched with a fear she had never seen before, and her heart hardened. She placed the box on the sofa between them.

"Dad," she said, her voice perfectly even. "I'm pregnant. It's Edward Carlisle's child."

Arthur's eyes widened. The sequence of emotions was stark and violent: shock, then rage, then a wave of pure terror that seemed to age him another decade.

"That monster? Clarry, how could you get involved with him? He'll destroy you!"

The words were barely out of his mouth before his eyes rolled back in his head. His body went limp, slumping against the cushions. He had passed out from the shock.

"Dad!" Clare screamed.

The lobby dissolved into chaos. The guard rushed over, phone already in hand, dialing 911.

In the back of the ambulance, Clare clutched her father's cold hand, guilt and a terrifying resolve warring within her. There was no turning back. The lie had taken on a life of its own.

At the hospital, the diagnosis was an acute stress-induced syncopal episode. He needed to be admitted for observation. Clare saw the estimated cost on the intake form and a wave of dizziness washed over her. It was an astronomical figure she had no way of paying.

She sat on a hard plastic chair in the hallway and used a payphone to call Mrs. Sullivan, telling her to come to the hospital to stay with Arthur.

"I have something important to do," she said, her voice devoid of emotion.

She knew waiting for an opportunity was useless. She had to create one. She needed to know Edward Carlisle's schedule for the day.

At that same moment, in his top-floor office overlooking Manhattan, Edward Carlisle was listening to his assistant, Felix Stone.

"Mr. Carlisle," Felix said, his tone low and steady. "Mr. Price has confessed to leaking the acquisition details. The trail leads back to your uncle."

Edward's ice-blue eyes showed no flicker of surprise. He was a man who expected betrayal. "Deal with it," he said softly. "I don't want to see his name on the roster for tomorrow's board meeting." The command was absolute, as chilling as it was simple. Felix Stone, his ever-present assistant, was the son of the Carlisle family's longtime chief of security, a man whose loyalty was as ingrained as his DNA.

"Understood," Felix replied. "And a reminder, you have a three o'clock site inspection at the new logistics hub at the port. The convoy is ready."

Meanwhile, Clare was hunched over a public computer in the hospital's waiting area, frantically searching for any news related to Edward Carlisle. She sifted through financial reports and society pages, using her insider knowledge of the city's elite to guess his movements.

A small article in a trade publication caught her eye. A photo showed a newly constructed warehouse. Carlisle Holdings' new port logistics center to begin operations today.

He would be there. He was the kind of man who oversaw his empire personally.

She quickly mapped the route to the Brooklyn port, identifying a stretch of service road along the river—relatively quiet, with less traffic.

A glance at the clock on the screen: 2:05 PM. She had less than an hour.

She ran out of the hospital and back onto the street. This time, she needed more than just a ride. She needed an accomplice.

She spotted a taxi driver who looked like he'd had a long, hard day. She approached his window, unclasping the Cartier watch from her wrist. It was her last valuable possession.

"This is yours," she said, holding it out. "If you do exactly as I say."

The driver's eyes widened at the sight of the watch, gleaming under the afternoon sun. He gave a single, decisive nod.

"Brooklyn port, take the river service road," she commanded as she got in.

On the way, she had him stop at another convenience store. She went into the restroom and unwrapped the pregnancy test. She didn't need to use it. With a steady hand, she took a fine-tipped red pen from her purse and carefully drew a second, stark line in the results window.

At 2:50 PM, the taxi was parked at a bend in the service road. In the distance, Clare saw it: a convoy of three black sedans, moving with disciplined speed.

"Now," she said to the driver.

The taxi shot out from the side street, tires squealing as it swerved to a halt, completely blocking the road.

The lead car stopped short. Two men in dark suits immediately got out, their expressions grim as they strode toward the taxi.

Clare took a deep breath, the air tasting of salt and gasoline. She pushed open her door and stepped out, walking directly into the path of the bodyguards, her eyes fixed on the silent, imposing Rolls-Royce Phantom idling behind them.
