Chapter 3

When Francis stopped me, I already had a bad feeling that he was reborn too.

"Daphne! Your father can't hold on for much longer!" my mother yelled in the car.

My father was convulsing violently in her arms.

I immediately got up and opened the car door to the back passenger seat.

"Mom, quickly loosen Dad's clothing. Open his mouth, and don't let him bite his tongue."

I slapped myself twice to force myself to calm down. Following the emergency measures a doctor had taught me in my previous life, I immediately began first aid on my father.

I never thought that the doctor's methods were in good use at that moment.

Sure enough, a few minutes later, my father was no longer convulsing, but he was still unconscious.

Francis crossed his arms, looking at me as if I was a joke. "My, my. You even did your research. Daphne, I've got to give it to you."

He added, "Jonathan has already gone to see Rosalin. No matter how much of an act you put on, he won't return. You can save it."

At that moment, covered in sweat, I finally realized what a terrible person I was from Jonathan's version of the story.

We met at someone else's wedding. I bumped into him smoking by the door. He bent down to help me pick up my purse.

I later found out that he was single from my father. It was only then I had the idea to pursue him.

No one had ever told me that he still had feelings for Rosalin.

I did not know much. I only knew that I liked him. How was that wrong?

Jonathan was clearly the one in the wrong. He should not be enjoying my pursuement while still being involved with another woman.

Right at that moment, my eyes lit up as I saw someone familiar among the crowd.

I yelled, "Dr. Dunn, please help me!"

Dr. Daniel Dunn, who was also stuck in traffic, walked over to me in confusion. He had rescued my father in my previous life.

At that moment, he was my knight in shining armor.

"You are…"

Before he could place a name on me, I pulled him right inside the car.

"Please save my father!"

When he saw my father, he soon realized how serious the problem was. He immediately looked stern and said to Francis, who was watching everything unfold from the side, "Officer, clear a path! This patient needs to be sent to the hospital at once!"

Francis thought nothing of it. "What doctor? You can stop with the act. Just stay where you are. Don't get involved in this."

Dr. Dunn had never been treated like that. He was so furious he glared at Francis.

"Go and ask for my reputation. Why on earth would I want to lie to you?!"

He then checked up on my father while yelling at Francis.

Francis suddenly looked a little hesitant. He would have recognized Dr. Dunn. After all, Dr. Dunn's photos were all over the internet.

"Even if you're a doctor, this woman can't go!"

Then, he called Jonathan and put the call on loudspeaker.

"What is it, Francis?"

I could not help but shudder when I heard Jonathan's voice. I still remembered the pain of being stabbed to death in my previous life.

"Jonathan, you were right. I did bump into Daphne. She insists that her father is having a cerebral hemorrhage. A doctor is asking for him to be sent to the hospital. Should I let them go?"

Jonathan scoffed arrogantly. "Let her go? In her dreams! Just let that tramp and her family die there! Rosalin is feeling unwell. She needs me. Don't call me unless there's an emergency."

Then, he hung up the call.

My mother was so furious her face flushed red. She wanted to yell at Jonathan, but her tears came first.

"Did we murder or commit arson? Why the hell is Jonathan doing this to my daughter?"

I started feeling dizzy. I wanted to ask the same question too.

Right at that moment, Dr. Dunn yelled, "We need to rescue him first!"

In the car, my father had started vomiting a large amount of blood. Francis could not dodge in time and received a mouthful of my father's blood on his face.

I lay on the wet asphalt, the cold rain mixing with the metallic taste of blood pooling in my mouth. My lungs were heavy, filling with fluid as my life ebbed away. Through swollen eyelids, I saw my lover, Clovis, and my stepsister, Alanna, standing over me with looks of pure triumph. "Thanks for the trust fund, sister," Alanna whispered, shoving a phone screen in front of my dying eyes. The headline was a jagged blade to my soul: Caesar Williamson, the "tyrant" husband I had fled from, was dead in a multi-car collision. He had died trying to rescue me, thinking I was in danger. The realization shattered what was left of my heart. The man I had spent years painting as a monster had driven into hell to save me, while the man I thought was my safety was the one who had just crushed my ribs with an iron bar. I had played right into their hands, ruining my reputation and my marriage for a lie. I watched them walk away, leaving me to choke on my own blood in the dark, discarded like a bag of trash. I wanted to scream, to beg the universe for a rewind button, to tell Caesar I was sorry. The darkness pressed down on me, heavier than the betrayal, as my world finally went black. Then, I was screaming. I shot up in bed, gasping for air like a drowning woman breaking the surface. I scrambled at my abdomen—smooth skin, no blood, no tear. I grabbed my phone and saw the date: it was three years ago, the morning of my wedding to the Williamson estate. I didn't waste a second. I scrubbed the "unstable" makeup from my face, threw on a white silk dress, and blocked the man who would eventually kill me. This time, I wasn't running away from the manor. I was going back to the husband I had once feared, ready to save the only man who had ever truly loved me.
