Chapter 10

Alpha Sylvester tried to control himself and his wolf who was getting really anxious watching Beta Dan dance with Millicent and taunted Sylvester.

'Look how happy she looks. She is really enjoying his company. I could have made her happier if you had not rejected her!' his wolf said.

'Everyone present here, including my father have all seen the engaged man ogling his own maid when his fiancee was seated right next to him!' Cathania sulked.

'Shut up! Sylvester bellowed both to his wolf and Cathania, but the sound of the music prevented anyone from hearing him apart from those he had been speaking to, though he couldn't have cared less. It was his pack and he could do as he pleased in it. He owed no one any apologies nor explanations, especially not his future in - laws. He didn't need them, he was already very strong to take on any adversary. All the neighbouring packs feared him, His in - laws were the people who needed his influence.

He looked at the scene for a while and fortunately, the music ended and his wolf heaved a sigh of relief. At least now, Millicent would go back to her work.

But another tune started almost immediately and though she had wanted to leave the Beta and continue with her chores, he drew her back into his arms. He could not believe how good she felt in his arms.

'You should dress more like this', he murmured into her hair.

She smiled. 'Is it my dress you like or me?' she asked. She was feeling flirtatious because she was so happy.

'I like you very much but I'd also like to see you well dressed', he said and looking deep into her eyes asked, 'What made you dress up for the party? You normally don't dress up for any function held here in Moon Ville Pack'.

'Today is a special day!' she said mysteriously and felt again how sad her wolf was.

'How so?' he asked absently, smelling the vanilla fragrance in her hair. 'Oh, you mean because of the Alpha's engagement? I have to agree with you on that'.

'No. Not that. Because it is my birthday and I have transformed', she said proudly.

'Oh, that's great news but you should have told the Alpha it was your birthday and he would have asked another to take your place', Dan said.

Oh, he did that. Cathania has taken my place in his life, not that I care, she thought but said, 'I did but he would not hear of it. I was to serve the guests'.

'That's cruel!' he said frowning and looking at the direction of Alpha Sylvester. But Sylvester had bend down to speak sternly to his wolf and Dan didn't see the murderous look meant for him, in his Alpha's eyes.

'You speak as though he's been anything but!' she laughed as though intoxicated though she had had nothing to drink.

Beside Alpha Sylvester, Cathania was sulking. She could not understand why Sylvester was acting so strangely. If she didn't know better, she would think that he had just seen his mate. He was just too focused on that stupid maid. But it was not possible that such a maid was Sylvester's mate. She wanted to throw a fit because she hated being ignored. Her father had spoiled her silly, being his only daughter amidst two boys and Sylvester had not treated her badly until now.

Then Alpha Sylvester stood, and without a word to anyone, walked towards Millicent.

'That's the spirit. Go and claim her, right away!' his wolf egged him on.

He ignored the troublesome wolf that was being difficult to control this evening.

As he passed by, every couple on the dance floor stopped to look as he advanced. He was tall - very tall - six feet five inches. Very handsome with blue eyes. His look belied his ugly personality. Yet almost all the women wanted to be in his bed. How will it feel to be mastered by such a hunk of a man? They wondered.

He got to where Millicent was dancing and Beta Dan saw him too late. 'Is this where and how you are guarding the pack?' Alpha Sylvester asked him, angrily and without waiting for a response, grabbed Millicent's hand and jerking her from Dan, dragged her upstairs, all eyes following their progress, everywhere was silent as a graveyard. No one knew when the music stopped, they just wondered why the Alpha looked so furious and was dragging the little maid upstairs, leaving his guests uncurteously, no excuses nor apologies offered.

When the door banged after them, the activities resumed as though there had not been any interruption.

Some of the older men with wisdom, felt there was more to the action of Alpha Sylvester that met the eye.But they continued with the merriment, each deep in his own thoughts.

Behind the shut door, Alpha Sylvester pushed Millicent away from him and since she was not expecting that, she lost her balance and fell.

'What was that for?' his wolf queried him angrily. 'Was that really called for?'

Sylvester wondered what the problem was with his wolf tonight. He was the one who was anxious that Dan was getting too close to Millicent and yet he was angry with him for widening the distance between the two?

'What have I done this time?' Millicent asked, looking up from her position on the floor.

'You have the guts to ask me that?' Alpha Sylvester asked furiously. 'You neglect your duties and kept dancing with my Beta like a woman on heat and you ask me what you have done wrong. How dare you?'

'I dare Alpha because, I am as good as exiled', Millicent answered.' And by the way, you rejected me and I accepted you rejection. The mate bond is broken. So I can be with whoever I please. What has that got to do with you?'

Sylvester could not believe that the little imp could speak to him that way. But he let it slide. He had more important things to do right now and he knew his wolf which was struggling to be let out would like that very much.

'Everything!', he responded to her query. 'It has everything to do with me because I own you! As long as you remain here, you are mine to control and you must act as such, if you do not want to face my wrath'.

'That is no problem, in a few hours, I shall no longer be a part of your pack', she said as she heaved herself up from her position on the floor. 'May I go now?'

'You have always been too full of yourself. What if I claim you now before you go on exile? What will you do then?' he asked, a devilish glint in his eyes.

Millicent felt fear. She did not want that. That was not what she wanted at all. How was she to get out of this?
