The Rejected Healer's Retribution Novel Cover

The Rejected Healer's Retribution

Elara is not a fighter. She is a healer. Her power is the rarest in the werewolf world. It was meant to protect her Pack and secure her place next to Alpha Kael, her destined mate. However, on the night of their claimed bond, Kael rejected her. He labeled her power a deadly threat. With a brutal and calculated act, he wounded himself with wolfsbane and publicly turned Elara away. She had to choose between saving the man who humiliated her or proving his belief that she was too dangerous to love. She saved him, but that night, the healer inside her died. Banished and broken, Elara sheds the blood-soaked title of healer and retreats into the shadows. She finds an ancient master who teaches her not patience, but poison. Instead of comfort, he shows her retribution. She learns to harness her past pain, using the volatile wolfsbane as her weapon. Five years later, the once-strong Lunar Pack is suffering from a mysterious illness that even their best doctors can't cure. They must look beyond their borders for help. Elara returns with a new name and a clever disguise. She is armed with charm and a dark plan. She is the Pack's only hope, and she will bring about the Alpha's downfall. Her revenge has a careful strategy. The closer she gets to healing his body, the closer she gets to ending his reign. But to destroy the Alpha, she must risk reigniting the very mate bond she vowed to forget.

Chapter 19

The air in the Sunken Crag felt heavy with adrenaline and the unspoken history between them. Kael stood before Elara, his hands clenched and his heart pounding in tune with their mate bond. The fear of almost losing her had pushed aside all caution.

"Elara," Kael said, his voice thick with guilt from the years. He didn't make excuses. "I know why you left. I saw the prophecy in my mind-the chaos, the Shadow Wolf. I did what I thought was necessary to protect the Pack, and I cursed you for it. I am sorry."

Elara finally took a shaky breath; the violet light around her faded. She felt exhausted, but hearing the truth in his voice allowed her to drop the mask of 'Elyra.'

"It's why I came back," she whispered, her voice raw. "Not for revenge, Kael. But to heal the wound you created and prevent a bigger one from consuming you. I needed you strong to fight the doom my power draws."

She glanced at the ridge where the enemy's howl had come from. "The ambush was the confirmation. The Shadow Wolf is real. And it has help. Gamma Torvin of Stonepeak arranged the summons. He knows I am the target and you are the key."

Kael nodded grimly. "I know about Torvin. I told Roric to track the conspiracy from inside the territory. He confirmed that this Crag was the planned Capture Zone."

Elara's eyes widened, a hint of real hope mixed with her fear. "Roric? He believed you? He didn't think you were still affected?"

"Roric's loyalty is genuine," Kael assured her as he stepped closer, gently touching the silver scar on her wrist. "And my command is clear. But we've wasted too much time with distance between us. Now we are united, and the enemy knows exactly where we are."

The primal urge to hold her, to finally claim her, ached in Kael's chest, but survival instincts were stronger. They needed to move.

"Torvin's plan failed because he didn't expect my restored strength," Kael said as he gathered their limited supplies. "We leave now. We head North toward the high peaks. The terrain is too rugged for large-scale tracking."

Elara agreed, but before they shifted, she placed her hand over his heart, reaching into his being. She needed to confirm his stability one last time.

She felt the clean, powerful surge of his Alpha core-her cure had worked. But then she sensed it: not residue, but a subtle, permanent signature. The site of the Wolfsbane trauma was a psychic weak point, a faint, metallic echo of the poison itself.

Elara realized with dread that the Wolfsbane had not just broken the mate bond; it had changed Kael's energy signature. Healing had contained the damage, but the scar remained a faint, passive link to dark magic.

"Kael, listen to me," Elara said urgently, pulling her hand away, her voice strained. "The Shadow Wolf is not following our scent or just my light. It's tracking you."

"Me? My scent is clean."

"Your energy isn't," she explained quickly. "The Wolfsbane trauma created a psychic weakness. It acts as a homing signal for the Shadow Wolf's dark magic. You are now permanently vulnerable to their tracking."

She looked at him, feeling the weight of this new shared danger crashing down. "My attempts to heal and hide you were pointless. Our union, while crucial to defeating them, makes us the biggest target around. We can't outrun this. We can only fight it."

Kael didn't flinch or deny the terrifying truth. He accepted it. The burden of his past mistake now felt like a physical weakness.

"Then we will use the signal," he said, pulling her close for one brief moment-the first touch filled with shared, overwhelming purpose, not cruelty or deceit. "If they are tracking my signature, they will expect me to lead them back to the Pack. We will lead them deeper into the wilderness. We'll use the signal as bait."

They shifted together, their forms bursting into the cold air of the Crag. Kael, massive and dark, and Elara, sleek and nimble, their scents merging into a powerful force.

They ran North, moving as one unstoppable unit. The silence of the mate bond vanished, replaced by a constant, overwhelming flood of shared urgency and the raw, pure language of their wolves.

I am sorry, my mate, Kael projected, the thought filled with love.

I know, Elara replied, her spirit strong and clear against his own. Now run.

They raced toward the high, dangerous peaks, two powerful shifters now bound by a troubling truth: every mile they ran, every shift in their scent, was a signal for the Shadow Wolf. Their reunion was complete, but their journey was just beginning. They were no longer fleeing from the past; they were heading towards the unavoidable confrontation that would decide the fate of all Packs.
