Chapter 3

Celeste's POV

The Ulfsang Pack house sat at the end of a long private road lined with trees so tall they blocked out most of the afternoon light. When the car finally pulled up and I saw it properly I stopped breathing for a second.

It was enormous. Not loud about it, not the kind of big that announces itself, just quietly, solidly built without compromise.

Stone exterior, floor to ceiling windows running the length of the front face, a wide entrance framed by dark wood and iron. The kind of place that told you everything you needed to know about the people who lived there without saying a word.

My father stepped out of the car behind me and stood quietly at my side for a moment, both of us just looking at it.

"You'll be alright here," he said.

I turned to look at him. His face was the same as it always was when he was trying to hold something steady for my sake, calm on the surface, something heavier underneath.

"I know," I said, even though I was not entirely sure.

He pulled me into a hug that lasted longer than our usual ones and I let it. When he stepped back he kept both hands on my shoulders and looked at me the way he always did when he needed me to actually hear him.

"I'm not disappearing. I'll be around, every week if you'll have me."

My throat tightened and I nodded because words were not coming easily right then.

He stepped back and looked at me the way he did when he needed me to actually hear him.

"You are worth more than what happened back there. Don't let it tell you otherwise. Their loss is the greatest mistake that pack will ever make and one day they will know it." He smiled, small and real. "I'll see you soon, sweetheart."

Mason took my bag from the boot without a word and carried it toward the front door. Jason waited until my father's car pulled away before he glanced at me, checking without making it obvious he was checking.

"Ready?"

"Not even a little," I said honestly.

The corner of his mouth lifted. "Good answer. Come on."

Inside was worse than outside, in the best way. High ceilings, dark hardwood floors polished so clean they caught the light from the windows, furniture that looked like it cost more than I wanted to think about. Everything was warm despite being expensive, like someone actually lived here instead of just owning it.

I stood in the entrance and turned slowly, taking it in.

"Your room is upstairs," Mason said, already at the staircase. He glanced back at me over his shoulder. "Come see it before you decide whether to be overwhelmed."

I followed him up.

The room stopped me at the door. It was bigger than I expected, with a bed so high off the ground it came with a small step beside it and sheets so crisp they looked untouched. Soft grey walls. Heavy curtains in dark charcoal.

A wide window seat overlooking the land behind the house, all of it private and green and quiet.

"Bathroom's through there," Mason said from behind me, nodding toward a door to the left. Jason picked the toiletries so if anything smells wrong that's on him."

"I heard that," Jason called from the hallway.

I laughed before I could stop myself. It came out small and surprised and I pressed my lips together after but Mason caught it and something in his expression shifted, something quiet and warm that he did not make into a big deal.

"Get some rest," he said simply. "Dinner's at seven if you want it. If you don't, that's fine too."

He left without waiting for an answer and I stood in the middle of that beautiful room and felt, for the first time since the ceremony, like I might actually be okay.

***

The days settled into a rhythm without anyone forcing it.

I felt Mason before he came into a room most mornings, that particular warmth that was specific to him, steady and unhurried, different from anything I felt before. It was nothing like the pull toward Aiden and Jayden. That pull always felt like a current dragging you under. This was the kind of thing you walked toward on your own.

One evening I came downstairs to find him in the living room, the television on low, the lamps casting everything in warm light against the dark windows. He looked up when I walked in.

"Couldn't sleep?"

"Didn't try yet." I sat at the other end of the sofa and pulled my feet up. "What are you watching?"

"Nothing good." He handed me the remote without being asked. "You pick."

I looked at him. He was already looking back at the screen like handing someone the remote was not the kind of thing you made into a moment.

I put something on and we sat there for the next two hours without saying much of anything and it was the most comfortable I felt since leaving Ashen Hollow.

Jason found me the following afternoon sitting at the window seat in my room, staring at nothing in particular.

He leaned in the doorway with two cups in hand and lifted one slightly. "Tea?"

I reached out and took it from him. "Thank you."

He came in and sat on the window seat across from me, close enough to be present, far enough to give me room. We sat quietly for a minute before he spoke.

"You're allowed to have bad days here, you know. You don't have to come downstairs performing fine."

I wrapped both hands around the cup. "Is it that obvious?"

"Only to me." He said it without arrogance, just fact. "Mason notices too but he won't say anything. That's how he is."

I looked out the window. "I keep thinking about how I wanted them. Before all of it." I did not say their names. I did not need to. "I feel stupid for it."

"You're not stupid. You're human." Jason leaned forward slightly, elbows on his knees. "What they did was wrong, Celeste. You're allowed to grieve that without it meaning anything about who you are."

I turned to look at him properly. There was nothing in his face that made me feel like a project or a problem to solve. Just someone sitting with me in a hard moment because he chose to be there.

"How are you both so calm about all of this?" I asked.

He was quiet for a second. Then, "Because you were always ours. We just waited longer than we should have to say it out loud."

I did not know what to do with that so I looked back out the window. But something in my chest that pulled tight since the ceremony loosened in a way that felt different from before.

Less like surviving. More like something beginning.

They loved me, i knew that without needing it explained or proven.

Mason with his quiet steadiness and Jason with his eyes that saw straight through every wall I put up.

They did not wait for the humiliation to settle before they stepped forward. Did not wait for the crowd to clear or the silence to break or for someone to tell them what to do.

The moment Aiden and Jayden finished speaking, they countered. Loud and clear and without a single second of hesitation.

That was not obligation. That was a choice.

And somewhere underneath all the grief I was still carrying, I was starting to understand what it meant to be chosen by men who actually meant it.
