Chapter 2

The fear in Kael's eyes sent a chill through me. Moments ago, I had believed the Moon Goddess had given me the greatest gift of my life. Now, standing in the center of the Moon Temple with hundreds of pack members watching, that gift felt like the beginning of a nightmare. The silver bond connecting us still glowed faintly in the air, undeniable proof that we were fated mates, yet Kael looked at me as though fate itself had made a terrible mistake.

The whispers around us grew louder with every passing second. Some wolves looked excited, others confused. Everyone was waiting for their Alpha to speak. I could barely breathe beneath the weight of their stares. My heart hammered painfully against my ribs as I searched Kael's face for some sign that I was wrong, some sign that he was shocked. Instead, the tension in his expression only deepened.

The High Priestess smiled warmly, clearly unaware of the storm building beneath the surface. "Alpha Kael," she said, her voice echoing through the temple, "the Moon Goddess has revealed your fated mate. This is a sacred blessing."

Kael's jaw tightened.

A heavy silence settled over the room.

Then he did something no one expected.

He turned away from me.

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

My stomach dropped.

The bond pulsed sharply inside my chest, as if it could feel my growing panic. Every instinct urged me to go to him, to close the distance between us, but my feet remained frozen in place. I watched him take another step away, his shoulders rigid with tension.

"Kael?" Rowan said quietly.

The Alpha didn't answer.

For the first time since I had known him, he looked trapped.

And that frightened me more than anything.

Because Kael Blackwood feared nothing.

Not rogue wolves.

Not rival Alphas.

Not war.

Yet somehow, the sight of me standing before him as his mate seemed to terrify him.

The realization felt like a knife twisting inside my chest.

The High Priestess frowned. "Alpha?"

Kael slowly turned back toward the crowd. His gray eyes met mine for the briefest moment. Something flickered there. Pain. Regret. Guilt. Then it vanished behind a wall of cold control.

When he finally spoke, his voice was calm.

Too calm.

"I reject the bond."

For a second, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The entire temple seemed to stop.

I stared at him, certain I had heard wrong.

The words didn't make sense.

They couldn't.

A fated mate bond was sacred.

The Moon Goddess herself chose mates.

Rejecting one was almost unheard of.

My mouth opened, but no sound emerged.

Shock held me prisoner.

The crowd erupted into chaos.

"What did he say?"

"He can't be serious."

"Did the Alpha just reject his mate?"

The whispers struck me from every direction like arrows.

My vision blurred.

Kael remained motionless.

Emotionless.

As though he hadn't just shattered my world.

Tears boiled behind my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. Not here. Not in front of everyone.

I lifted my chin and forced myself to meet his gaze.

"Why?" I whispered.

The question barely left my lips.

But in the stunned silence that followed, everyone heard it.

Kael's expression hardened.

"I have my reasons."

The answer hit harder than the rejection itself.

No explanation.

No apology.

No compassion.

Just cold, brutal finality.

Something inside me broke.

Years of admiration.

Years of secret hope.

Years of dreaming.

Gone in an instant.

The bond pulsed violently, sending a wave of pain through my chest. I staggered slightly, struggling to stay on my feet. The High Priestess rushed forward, horror written across her face.

"Alpha Kael, reconsider this. The consequences

"I am aware of the consequences."

His voice cut through hers like a blade.

The temple fell silent again.

And for the first time in my life, I hated him.

Yet even as anger rose inside me, another emotion lingered beneath it.

Confusion.

Because, despite the cold words leaving his mouth, I could still see something hidden in his eyes.

Something that didn't match his actions.

Something that looked dangerously close to heartbreak.

Then Kael spoke again.

And the next words out of his mouth would humiliate me before the entire pack. The tension inside the temple became unbearable. Every eye remained fixed on us. I could feel the weight of the crowd pressing down on me, waiting for an explanation that never came. My heart still refused to accept what was happening. This couldn't be real. Only minutes ago, I had believed fate was finally smiling on me. Now I stood in the center of the temple watching that dream crumble into dust.

Kael's face remained unreadable, but there was something strange about the way he held himself. His hands were clenched into fists at his sides, and his shoulders looked unnaturally stiff. It was almost as though he was fighting a battle no one else could see. For a brief moment, I wondered if rejecting me hurt him, too.

The thought disappeared the second the crowd began whispering again.

"Why would he reject her?"

"Did she do something wrong?"

"Maybe the Alpha already has someone else."

Each word felt like another knife twisting deeper into my chest. Embarrassment burned through me. I wanted to run. I wanted to disappear before the pity in their eyes became too much to bear.

I searched Kael's face one last time, desperate for some sign that he would change his mind.

He didn't.

Instead, he looked directly at me.

The bond between us pulsed painfully.

And then, in front of the entire pack, Kael took a deep breath as if preparing himself for something neither of us could escape.

What happened next would change both of our lives forever. As Aria turned away from the gathering, fighting back tears, she failed to notice a hooded figure watching from the edge of the crowd. Hidden beneath the shadows, the stranger smiled coldly. At last, the Moon Heir had been revealed. The hunt for her had officially begun tonight.
