Chapter 3

Seven days passed in a tense, suffocating standoff.

The doorbell chimed, cutting through the quiet morning. I walked across the foyer and pulled the front door open.

Mia stood on the welcome mat. She wore a fitted beige turtleneck and held a thick stack of glossy sheet music against her chest.

"Good morning, Lynn," Mia smiled, stepping forward.

I blocked the doorway. "What are you doing here?"

"Mr. Miller asked me to bring the new sonatas. We are switching to daily in-home lessons to prepare for the youth competition."

"No, you aren't." I kept my voice flat, refusing to let her see my hands tremble. "You are not coming into my house."

"Is there a problem out here?" Ethan's voice boomed from the top of the stairs.

He descended rapidly, tying his silk necktie. He didn't look at me. His eyes went straight to the blonde woman on our porch.

"Mia, come inside. It is freezing."

"She isn't coming in, Ethan," I stated, standing my ground. "I am drawing a line. Daily lessons in our living room? Absolutely not."

Ethan shoved past me. He grabbed Mia's arm and pulled her into the foyer. The cold air rushed in before he slammed the door shut.

"Are you out of your mind?" Ethan yelled, his face flushing red. "The competition is three months away. Do you want Leo to fail?"

"I want boundaries in my own home!"

"This isn't about you!" Ethan pointed a finger inches from my face. "It is about our son's future. You are actively trying to sabotage his chances because of your insane jealousy."

"I am protecting my family from a woman who has no business being here."

Mia lowered her eyes, clutching the sheet music tighter. "I can leave, Ethan. I don't want to cause friction."

"You are staying," Ethan snapped at her, then turned his glare back to me. "You will not disrespect her. She is a Juilliard graduate doing us a massive favor."

"Mia!"

Small feet pounded against the hardwood floor. Leo sprinted down the hallway, still in his pajamas. He threw his arms around Mia's waist.

She stroked his hair. "Hey, buddy. Ready to practice?"

"Mom says you can't stay," Leo whined, turning a fierce scowl on me.

"Because your mother is being unreasonable," Ethan told him.

I dropped to one knee, trying to meet my son at eye level. "Leo, sweetie, you can practice at the studio. We don't need—"

"I want Mia here!" Leo screamed, his face contorting. "You always say no! You hate me!"

"I love you," I pleaded, reaching for his hand. "I just—"

Leo slapped my fingers away. He spun around and sprinted into the living room.

I chased after him. "Leo, stop yelling."

He grabbed the heavy, leather-bound scrapbook resting on the coffee table.

My stomach dropped.

I had spent six months painting the watercolor borders and writing down every funny thing he said since kindergarten. It was his birthday gift for next week. I had left it out to dry the final page.

"Leo, put that down," I warned, my voice shaking.

"You won't let me have Mia!" he shrieked.

He gripped the thick pages. With a violent jerk, he ripped a handful of them right out of the binding.

The sound of tearing paper echoed like a gunshot.

"No!" I lunged forward.

He backed away, ripping another section. Watercolor paintings of our trips to the zoo, hand-drawn tickets, and baby photos fluttered to the rug in jagged pieces.

"I hate you! You are the worst mom in the world!" Leo threw the mutilated album onto the floor and stomped on it.

My knees gave out. I sank onto the rug, my hands hovering over the shredded pages. The little painted elephant I spent three hours perfecting was torn in half.

Ethan walked into the living room, Mia trailing just behind him.

He looked at the mess, then at me.

"Look what you made him do," Ethan sneered. "Are you proud of yourself? You pushed him to this."

"He just destroyed his memories," I whispered, staring at the ruined paper.

"Because you are suffocating him," Ethan retorted. "He needs structure. He needs someone who actually supports his talent. Mia is teaching him every day. It is not up for debate."

Leo ran back to Mia, hiding his face against her leg. She patted his shoulder, her eyes entirely devoid of sympathy as she looked down at me.

"I will go set up the piano," Mia said softly.

"Go ahead," Ethan agreed.

They walked past me. I sat on the floor, surrounded by the torn pieces of my motherhood. The double strike of my husband's rage and my son's hatred pinned me to the ground.

If I fought them now, Ethan would use it against me. The text message from last week burned in my mind. *He is filing for full custody.*

If I kicked Mia out today, Ethan would twist this fight. He would take Leo away forever.

"Fine," I croaked.

Ethan paused in the hallway.

"She can teach him here," I said, my voice hollow. I gathered the shredded pages into my lap.

"Glad you finally found some sense," Ethan muttered, walking toward the kitchen.

The piano keys began to chime from the study. A bright, cheerful melody that mocked the silence in the living room.

I sat alone, clutching the ruined album against my chest.

My phone vibrated in my pocket.

I pulled it out. The screen lit up with a new message from the unknown number.

*Check the sheet music folder she left on the entryway table. Page four.*
