Chapter 2

After Asher left, I sat alone in the penthouse apartment, the one I’d bought for him, and looked around the empty space that was once our life.

Imported Italian marble floors. A custom smart home system. Floor-to-ceiling windows with a panoramic view of the Rivera skyline.

All of it purchased with money I had withdrawn from the Bishop family trust.

Ten years ago, in the hallowed halls of Harvard Law, I thought I’d found the love of my life in Asher Kane.

He was just a driven, ambitious student then, hunched over books about startups in the library. When he’d looked up and his gray-green eyes met mine, I saw a fire I’d never seen in the privileged world I came from. I was utterly captivated.

For two years, I engineered our paths to cross until he finally, truly saw me. He was raising funds for his tech dream, and I was the girl with the legal background and the family resources. Our work bled into romance, and when he decided to move to the tech hub of Rivera, I followed without a second thought.

That decision cost me dearly—a vicious fight with my father that nearly severed our relationship for good. He wanted me in Northgate, groomed to take over the Bishop family’s prestigious law firm, not "throwing away your future for some man."

But I was a true believer. I thought love could conquer all.

In Rivera, I became a top business negotiator on my own merits, while also pouring everything I had into Asher's career. I secured his first round of venture capital. I built his company’s legal framework. I even used my trust to provide his seed money.

In those early days, we were a team. We fought for every small victory, celebrated every milestone, and dreamed of building an empire together. We even established a charitable foundation, vowing to use our future success to help others.

Those were the best of times.

But everything changed after his company went public.

Suddenly, Asher was Rivera's hottest new tech mogul. He was surrounded by investors, celebrities, and sycophants. His ambition swelled, but his affection for me withered.

He started complaining that I was "too aggressive" in my own career, that my success was "unfeminine" and made him look bad in front of his new friends.

I tried to change. I tried to be softer, more demure, the ideal "girlfriend" he now seemed to want. But it only made him resent me more, calling me "fake" and "insincere."

No matter what I did, he was never satisfied.

Now, I finally understood. The problem was never me.

I opened my laptop and started reviewing the accounts of our charitable foundation.

Asher and I each held a 50% stake, but according to the partnership agreement we signed eight years ago—an agreement he’d insisted on to "prove" he wasn’t taking advantage of me—in the event of a dispute, I had the final say.

Looking back, that clause was the smartest decision I'd made in eight years.

The foundation’s current net worth was over three billion dollars, mostly from my initial investments and subsequent donations. I could unilaterally initiate the liquidation process and reclaim my share.

I drafted an email to our legal team in New York, instructing them to begin the proceedings first thing in the morning.

By the time I was done, it was four a.m.

Sleep was impossible, so I went out onto the balcony.

The Rivera skyline glittered below, a sprawling galaxy of city lights. I had lived here for eight years, arriving as a starry-eyed law graduate and becoming... whatever this was. I remembered the thrill of first moving here, convinced Asher and I would conquer the world together.

Now, it was clear I was just a stepping stone on his path to glory. The moment he no longer needed me, he cast me aside without a second thought.

The next morning, I went straight to the law firm.

My lawyer, Thomas, a senior partner at the firm, prepared the liquidation paperwork with grim efficiency.

"Cailin, this is irreversible," he reminded me gently as I took the pen. "Once you sign, your business partnership with Asher is officially terminated."

I signed my name with a steady hand. "I know."

"And your romantic relationship—"

"That's over, too," I cut him off.

That afternoon, I had a charity art exhibition to attend.

It was supposed to be a joint public appearance for me and Asher, but I decided to go alone.

The exhibition was held at Rivera's most upscale art center, featuring works by the world's most influential contemporary artists.

I wore a simple, elegant black Armani suit.

Upon entering the gallery, I was immediately drawn to a massive abstract painting, all raw color and emotional tension.

"This piece is stunning, isn't it?"

I turned to see Asher.

He wore a custom deep-blue suit, looking impossibly handsome. But the dark circles under his eyes told me he hadn't slept.

Julia stood beside him, looking pale and fragile in a beige Chanel suit.

"Look, about last night," he began, his tone already laced with familiar impatience. "You completely overreacted."

I glanced at Julia. She was watching me, her expression wounded.

"Ms. Bishop," she said, her voice faint, "I was hoping to speak with you. About the foundation suspending all funding for the children's education project I’m managing… I was wondering if there was some misunderstanding?"

"There's no misunderstanding," I replied coolly. "The project was suspended pending a full financial audit."

This was true. I’d discovered questionable expenses in several projects under Julia’s management.

Asher immediately bristled. "Cailin, those are minor accounting errors. You don't need to halt the entire project. You're jeopardizing the education of hundreds of children."

"Financial compliance is not a minor issue," I stated flatly.

"You're just doing this to get back at Julia," his voice rose. "Do you have any idea how much of her own time and effort she's put into these projects?"

Julia interjected, her performance of grace flawless. "Asher, please don't say that about Ms. Bishop. I’m sure she has her reasons."

She turned to me, her eyes welling with tears. "Ms. Bishop, if I've done something to displease you, please just tell me. I will do everything I can to improve."

It was a brilliant performance.

But I was no longer an appreciative audience.

"Julia, your work ethic isn't in question," I said. "But the foundation has standards."

"What standards?" Asher challenged. "Be specific."

"For instance, a project lead shouldn't be using the foundation's credit card for personal luxury purchases," I said, my gaze flicking to the Cartier bracelet on Julia's wrist. "That bracelet is beautiful. Which project's budget paid for it?"

Julia's face went ashen.

Asher froze for a second. "That was a gift from me. It had nothing to do with the foundation."

"Is that so?" I took out my phone and pulled up a bank statement. "Then perhaps you can explain this ninety-eight-thousand-dollar charge from Cartier on the foundation's card three months ago? The one signed for by Julia Thorne."

Silence.

Julia began to tremble. "I—I can explain—"

"No need," I said, putting my phone away. "The auditors will find everything."

Asher's face was a thundercloud. "Even if there was some minor mismanagement, that's no reason to—"

"There's more," I interrupted. "Private jets. Five-star hotels. Luxury shopping sprees. The total exceeds five hundred thousand dollars. All billed as 'project expenses.'"

Then, without warning, Julia shrieked and threw herself toward a nearby sculpture—a multi-million-dollar installation of steel and glass. "Ah!" she cried, collapsing at its base. "Ms. Bishop, why would you push me?"

I hadn't moved. I was a good three feet away from her.

But her scream had drawn the attention of every guest in the gallery.

Asher immediately rushed forward, shoving me aside to get to her.

I stumbled backward, losing my balance. My arm slammed hard against the sharp metal edge of the sculpture.

A searing pain shot up my arm, and I looked down to see a warm, crimson line welling up.

Blood.

A long, deep gash was laid open on my forearm, blood dripping onto the pristine white floor.

"Oh my God!" the gallery curator exclaimed beside me. "Someone call an ambulance!"

But Asher didn't even glance my way. All his attention was on Julia.

"Are you okay? Where does it hurt?" he asked, anxiously checking her over.

Julia clutched her leg, sobbing hysterically. "My leg… Asher, it hurts so much."

The curator rushed to my side. "Ms. Bishop, that wound needs immediate attention. Let me help you—"

"Leave her," Asher snapped, his voice dangerously cold. "It's a scratch. She'll live. This is what she gets for starting trouble. If she hadn't laid a hand on Julia, this never would have happened."

His words were colder and cut deeper than any shard of metal.
