Chapter 3

"Claire, I'm home."

Daniel's voice came through the security feed in my Tribeca penthouse. I sat on a white linen sofa with the tablet balanced on my knees while he dragged a suitcase into the Westchester foyer.

"Traffic from JFK was a nightmare," he called. "Where are you?"

The house answered with the low hum of the heating system.

He dropped his keys into the brass bowl, loosened his tie, and finally noticed the ring on the console.

His entire body went still.

He picked it up and turned it between his fingers. His thumb traced the engraved anniversary date.

"Claire?"

He called my number. The phone beside me remained silent because I had already set his contact to send directly to voicemail.

"Pick up," he muttered at the empty foyer. "Come on."

He climbed the stairs two at a time. The hall camera followed him into the bedroom, where he stopped before my half of the closet.

Empty shelves. Bare hangers. No shoes beneath the window. Even the framed photograph of my grandmother was gone.

"What the hell?"

He opened drawers, yanked back the bathroom door, and checked the guest room as though I might be hiding behind a bed. In the laundry room, he kicked a wicker basket hard enough to crack the frame.

"Claire! This isn't funny!"

I lowered the tablet volume. My mother called at the same moment, frightened by Daniel's repeated messages. I told her not to answer the door, sent her the number for building security, and arranged for a driver to bring her to my apartment the following morning. Daniel had always treated my family as an extension of me. He was about to learn they had boundaries too.

A part of me had expected satisfaction. Instead I felt the calm of someone watching a building after the evacuation alarm. The fire was already inside. I had simply left before the smoke reached me.

Daniel returned to the bedroom and called Sophie.

Her voice was faint through the speaker. "Did you make it home?"

"She's gone."

A pause. "What do you mean, gone?"

"Her clothes. Her jewelry. Everything. Her ring was downstairs."

"Maybe she went to her mother's."

"She passed me at the gate," he said slowly. "A Mercedes. I waved."

He moved to the window, staring down at the driveway. "That was her."

Sophie said something too soft for the camera to catch.

"No, she doesn't know," Daniel snapped. "She can't know."

I almost laughed.

He ended the call and marched into his study. Papers flew as he searched my desk. He opened the locked filing drawer with the spare key he thought I had forgotten about. The drawer contained nothing but blank folders.

Then his phone rang.

"Daniel Davis," he answered.

The color left his face as he listened.

"What order?"

He sank into the leather chair.

"No, there has been a mistake. My wife does not have separate counsel. We use Feldman for family matters."

His attorney's voice rose sharply enough to reach the microphone.

Daniel stood again. "She filed this morning?"

He paced behind the desk, one hand pressed to his forehead.

"You cannot let a judge freeze anything. The Cayman account is corporate. It has nothing to do with my marriage."

Another pause.

"How did she know about it?"

That question echoed longer than the others.

He opened his laptop and began typing. The camera angle showed only the top of the screen, but his movements turned frantic. He tried a banking login, swore, then called the company's chief financial officer.

"Mark, I need you to move the reserve funds into the operating account. Now."

I leaned closer to the tablet.

Mark's reply came through the speaker. "I can't. Legal put a hold on extraordinary transfers. We received a preservation order."

"It's my company."

"The order names you personally and several subsidiaries. The board has been copied."

Daniel slammed the laptop shut. "Who told the board?"

"The court notice did."

He disconnected and hurled the phone onto the desk. It bounced once, skidded across the wood, and struck a framed photograph from our first investor gala. The glass cracked directly over my face.

For several minutes, he stood staring at it.

Then he picked up the ring again.

"Claire," he said to the empty room, no longer shouting. "What did you do?"

My own phone lit with a message from Evelyn.

Emergency order entered. Service completed electronically. Physical copies will be delivered tomorrow. Do not respond to him.

A second message followed from Marcus.

Forensic team found three hotels, six jewelry purchases, and a corporate apartment leased under Sophie's name. All paid through Davis Innovations.

I forwarded both to a new evidence folder.

On the security feed, Daniel opened the home monitoring app on his phone. I watched his expression change as he discovered the driveway footage. He dragged the timeline backward, replayed the moment our cars passed, and froze the frame.

My face was faintly visible behind the windshield.

He enlarged it.

The realization hit him with physical force. He gripped the edge of the desk and bowed his head.

His phone chimed again. This time, an email banner appeared large enough for the camera to catch.

NOTICE OF DIVORCE ACTION - CROFT & WELLS LLP.

He opened it. The first page filled the screen: Claire Hart Davis v. Daniel Cole Davis.

For one long second, he did not move.

Then he swept the laptop, the framed photograph, and every file on the desk to the floor.

"She is not leaving me," he said.

The words were quiet, almost reasonable.

That made them more dangerous than the shouting.

He picked up his phone and called my mother.

When she did not answer, he left a message.

"Tell Claire she has one hour to call me," he said, each word clipped and controlled. "After that, I come to your house and bring her home myself."

I saved the recording and sent it to Evelyn.

Tomorrow, Daniel would receive the papers in front of his board.

And I would be there to watch him understand that the woman he believed would never leave had already declared war.
