Chapter 3

Nurse Davis came in to change her IV drip, her movements quiet and gentle. She saw Chloe sitting up, her face pale but her jaw set, and her expression softened with sympathy.

"Can I get you some water, honey?" the nurse asked.

"I can get it myself," Chloe said, her voice raspy. She reached for the plastic cup on the bedside table.

Her hand was still weak, and the cup, heavy with water, tilted precariously. Hot water sloshed over her fingers, turning the skin an angry red. She didn't make a sound. She just tightened her grip, brought the cup to her lips, and took a sip.

Her phone buzzed against the table. The screen lit up with a name: Laura Vance, Head of HR, Montgomery Industries.

Chloe took a deep, steadying breath, which sent a fresh spike of pain through her incision. She cleared her throat and answered, forcing her voice into a cool, professional tone. "Chloe Hayes."

"Well, well, look who decided to answer her phone." Laura's voice dripped with condescending sweetness. "We were all so worried. When you didn't show up for the board meeting this morning, we thought something terrible might have happened." The sarcasm was thick enough to cut with a knife.

"I had a medical emergency," Chloe stated flatly. "I'm in the hospital."

"Oh, the hospital!" Laura tsked dramatically. "That's the excuse this week? You know, Mr. Montgomery was extremely displeased with your unprofessionalism. Your absence nearly derailed the quarterly report. He's considering... disciplinary action. Possibly termination."

Hearing Julian's name, spoken as a threat, was the final insult. A bitter, humorless laugh escaped Chloe's lips. The knuckles of the hand holding the phone turned white. The old Chloe would have apologized, groveled, promised to make it up.

The new Chloe was done with that.

"You know what, Laura?" she said, her voice dropping to an icy calm. "Tell him not to bother. Just have your assistant type up the termination letter and email it to me. I'll be waiting."

There was a stunned silence on the other end of the line. Laura stammered, completely thrown by this unexpected defiance. "I... what?"

Chloe hung up.

She set the phone down and took another breath, this one deeper, more deliberate. The pain was a sharp, grounding reality. She pressed the call button for the nurse.

"Nurse Davis," she said when the woman appeared. "I have an unusual request. I need a laptop. And a secure internet connection."

An hour later, the laptop was open on her hospital tray. Fighting waves of dizziness from the blood loss, Chloe logged into her personal email account. She found the folder labeled 'PRENUP' and opened the file.

The legal jargon swam before her eyes, but the core message was clear. If she, Chloe Hayes, initiated a divorce, she would walk away with next to nothing. A small, one-time payment that wouldn't even cover a year's rent in a decent New York neighborhood. He had planned for this. He had built a cage of financial dependency around her from the very beginning.

A cold smile touched her lips. He thought he had her trapped.

She closed the file and opened a new browser tab. She typed in the address of one of New York's most exclusive real estate agencies. She filtered the search: Manhattan. Doorman. Highest security.

The listings were breathtakingly expensive. She found a sleek, modern apartment in a discreet building, one that valued privacy above all else. The deposit alone was a staggering figure.

Chloe reached for her wallet. She pulled out the sleek, black card he had given her. The American Express Centurion Card. The "black card." It had no official spending limit. It was meant for family expenses, for maintaining the Montgomery lifestyle. She had never once used it for a personal indulgence.

Until now.

Without a moment's hesitation, she typed the 15 digits into the payment portal. She was not just putting a deposit on an apartment. She was making the first investment in her new life.

A confirmation email from a realtor, Ms. Foster, popped into her inbox almost immediately. Chloe replied, her fingers flying across the keyboard, requesting the earliest possible viewing. Each keystroke was a decisive act, burning the bridges behind her.

With her escape route secured, she opened a blank document. The title was simple: Resignation.

The letter was short, professional, and devoid of any emotion. It was the kind of letter a stranger would write.

Nurse Davis returned with a tray of bland hospital food. She looked at Chloe, who was pale and clearly in pain, yet working with a fierce intensity that seemed to burn from within.

Chloe closed the laptop. She picked up the fork and began to eat the tasteless, lukewarm meal. She forced down every single bite.

She needed to get her strength back. The battle against Julian Montgomery IV and his entire dynasty was just beginning.

On the flat-screen TV mounted to the wall, a financial news channel was on. The Montgomery Industries stock ticker flashed green, showing a significant gain. And there he was. Julian. On the screen, looking powerful and confident as he gave an interview outside the stock exchange.

She looked at the handsome, smiling face of her husband, the man who had left her to bleed out on the floor, and she felt nothing but a profound and chilling disgust. He was a stranger.

She picked up the remote and switched off the TV, plunging the room into silence.

Then, she picked up her phone and dialed the one person she knew she could count on. Her best friend, Maya.
