Chapter 3

Kaitlynn paid the bill. She paid for all of it—her untouched risotto, Julian's half-eaten steak, Ava's wine. She maintained the quiet dignity of Mrs. Sinclair, even as her world was crumbling.

She stepped out of the restaurant and into the biting New York night. The wind whipped around the corner, a physical manifestation of the chill that had settled deep in her soul. She didn't hail a cab. Instead, she started walking, her heels clicking a lonely rhythm on the pavement of Fifth Avenue.

The glittering shop windows displayed a fantasy world of perfection she no longer belonged to. Her own reflection stared back-a woman in a beautiful dress with haunted eyes. She gave a small, bitter laugh.

Her phone buzzed in her purse. Julian's name flashed on the screen. She swiped to decline the call.

A minute later, it rang again. This time, it was Diana Sinclair. Her mother-in-law. The call was not a request, but a summons. Kaitlynn knew she couldn't ignore it. She answered.

"Get to the estate. Now," Diana's voice was like chips of ice. "I need to speak with you."

The line went dead.

With a sigh of resignation, Kaitlynn flagged down a taxi and gave the address of the Sinclair family estate in Greenwich.

The house was ablaze with lights when she arrived, a fortress of old money and older secrets. Diana was waiting in the grand drawing room, a formidable figure in a silk dressing gown, perched on the edge of a brocade sofa.

Julian was there too. He stood behind his mother's shoulder, his head bowed, looking like a chastened schoolboy. He had clearly already given his version of events.

The moment Kaitlynn stepped into the room, Diana slapped a piece of paper onto the marble coffee table. It was a hospital report.

"Look at what you've done," Diana hissed. "Ava nearly went into anaphylactic shock. She could have died."

Kaitlynn didn't look at the report. She kept her eyes on Diana. "I didn't force her to eat it. She did it herself."

Diana let out a sharp, derisive laugh. "So you're saying Ava tried to kill herself at your anniversary dinner? Kaitlynn, I don't care what petty squabbles you have, but when you cause harm to someone important to Julian, you have made a grave mistake."

"Mom, it was an accident..." Julian started, his voice weak.

"Be quiet!" Diana snapped, not even turning to look at him. "You can't even control your own wife. You let her embarrass the Sinclair name in public."

Her fury then rounded back on Kaitlynn, her eyes sharp and cruel. "Three years. Three years you've been married to my son, and your womb is still empty. Not only have you failed to provide an heir for this family, now you're causing trouble."

The words were a physical assault. The topic of children was a raw, gaping wound for Kaitlynn.

Flashes of a dark, cramped space filled her mind. The smell of damp earth. The suffocating terror. It was the aftermath of her kidnapping years ago, a trauma that left her with crippling PTSD. It made intimacy a battlefield, a terrifying landscape she could barely navigate.

It was her deepest secret. She had never told Julian, afraid he would see her as damaged, tainted goods.

Seeing her silence, Diana took it as an admission of guilt. Her voice dropped, becoming even more venomous. "I don't care what you have to do. I want to see a Sinclair heir within one year. If you can't manage that, you can pack your bags and get out of this family for good."

It was a clear, brutal ultimatum.

Kaitlynn's gaze flew to Julian, a desperate, silent plea for him to say something. Anything.

He wouldn't meet her eyes. He just stared at a point on the Persian rug, his silence a deafening confirmation. He agreed with his mother.

In that moment, she had never felt so utterly alone. The weight of her husband's betrayal and her mother-in-law's cruelty pressed down on her, threatening to crush her.

But she didn't break. She straightened her spine, pulling the last of her dignity around her like a shield. She looked directly at Diana.

"I understand."

Without another word, she turned and walked out of the room, her steps even and measured as she climbed the grand staircase to the cold, empty bedroom that was supposed to be hers.

The moment the door closed behind her, her strength shattered. Her body slid down the wood paneling to the floor. She wrapped her arms around herself, a desperate, self-protective hug, as uncontrollable shudders wracked her body.

The darkness from her past swirled around her, threatening to pull her under. The feeling of being trapped, of suffocating, was overwhelming.

She knew Julian wouldn't be coming to this room tonight.

This was a battle she would have to face alone. And her deepest wound had just become the weapon they would use against her.
