Chapter 2

Three days after Tyler’s betrayal, sleep had become a stranger. The world felt brittle, every sound in my apartment magnified by the silence that pressed in like a threat. I couldn’t afford another night of pacing, but the walls seemed to close in, stifling me. So I pulled on my jacket and slipped outside just past midnight, clutching a grocery bag of ramen and aspirin for Marian, who’d been shivering with fever all evening. A shortcut through the alley behind our building promised a few minutes less of cold, but my pulse quickened with every step.

The alley was darker than usual, the city’s neon glow shrunk to a faint smear at the far end. My sneakers splashed through oily puddles as I hurried past dumpsters, the air thick with the stink of rot and cigarettes. Halfway through, voices—low, clipped, male—halted me. I hugged the shadows, heart hammering, but curiosity—or stupidity—kept my feet rooted.

A man knelt on the concrete, hands bound, blood streaming from his mouth. Over him stood Marco, that brute I’d glimpsed at Café Luna—his bulky frame unmistakable even in silhouette. The gun in his hand glittered beneath the single alley lamp. "You talk, you die. You run, you die. You betray the family, you beg for death," Marco said, voice flat as steel. The kneeling man whimpered, pleading in broken English.

I tried to back away, but my keys slipped from trembling fingers, skittering across the asphalt with a metallic clatter. The sound cut through the tension, and three faces snapped toward me—one terrified, one murderous, one unreadable. Dominic stood in the shadows behind Marco, his suit immaculate, hands tucked behind his back like this was just another business meeting. His eyes found mine, and I froze.

Marco raised his gun, lips curling. "Witnesses don’t walk away, sweetheart."

I forced myself not to cower, but my knees threatened to buckle. In that suspended moment, the world shrank to Dominic’s impassive face. "No," he said quietly, raising a hand. The command was absolute, brooking no argument. Marco hesitated, uncertainty flickering in his eyes. Dominic stepped forward, his gaze dissecting me—fear, yes, but also something else: stubbornness, rage, the refusal to beg.

"Go home, Elena," Dominic said softly, as if my name was a secret only he knew. "Forget what you saw."

My throat worked, but no words came. Marco sneered, but holstered his gun. The kneeling man’s sobs faded into the city noise as Dominic’s silhouette blotted out the light, and I slipped away, pulse thrumming a frantic tattoo. I didn’t stop running until I slammed my apartment door behind me, hands shaking so badly I could barely lock it.

But dawn brought no relief—only new disasters. An eviction notice, taped in lurid orange to my door, fluttered in the stale hallway air. I tore it down, scanned the threats in block letters, and let it fall to the floor. The phone rang—another bill collector, this one from the hospital. "Miss Rodriguez, unless we receive payment for Marian’s chemotherapy within forty-eight hours, we’ll have to discontinue treatment." The woman’s voice was cold, efficient. I hung up before she finished, sinking to my knees on the threadbare rug. I had nothing left. No job, no savings, no hope. Only a growing, gnawing desperation.

That afternoon, as I sat hunched over bills at the kitchen table, the buzzer startled me. I wiped my eyes, composing my face. Through the cracked intercom, a child’s bright voice rang: "It’s Bella! And Sofia! Can we come up?"

My heart lurched. I opened the door, and Bella burst in, arms full of crayons and a battered coloring book. Sofia—her nanny—trailed behind, looking apologetic. "She insisted," Sofia murmured, eyes darting around my cramped apartment as if searching for threats.

Bella took in the room at a glance: the peeling paint, the stack of overdue notices, the single vase of wilted daisies. She climbed onto a chair beside me, frowning at the eviction notice. "Are you sad again?" she asked, tiny fingers brushing a tear from my cheek. "My papa says crying is for when you’re alone, but I think it’s okay to cry with friends."

I managed a shaky smile. "You’re a very wise little girl, Bella."

She beamed, then handed me a pink crayon. "Will you braid my hair while I color? You do it the best."

I combed her curls, fingers finding comfort in the simple ritual, letting her chatter fill the emptiness. Sofia sat quietly, watching us with a strange, searching expression. Bella leaned into me, humming, utterly at home. For a moment, I let myself imagine this was normal—a mother, a daughter, a kitchen table free of dread.

A knock shattered the spell. The door swung open and Dominic strode in, filling the small space with his presence. He paused in the doorway, surveying the scene: Bella perched in my lap, my hands threading through her hair, the coloring book splayed open, Sofia silent in the corner. His eyes lingered on the eviction notice, then flicked to my face—searching, unreadable, but softer than I’d ever seen.

Bella bounced off my lap, rushing to his side. "Papa, look! Elena made me a princess!"

He smiled—just barely—but his gaze never left me. For a heartbeat, none of us spoke. Then Dominic stepped fully into the room, voice silk over steel. "Elena, I have a proposal. For Bella’s sake—and for business. Become her live-in nanny. And my contract wife. Fifty thousand upfront, ten thousand a month. A new start. Stability."

I stared at him, stunned, the offer hanging in the air like a lifeline—one that might be a noose. My mind raced, torn between fear, hope, and something dangerously close to longing.

Dominic’s eyes locked on mine, unblinking. "You have forty-eight hours. But if you say yes, know that you’ll never walk away unchanged."

A chill skittered down my spine. Outside, thunder rumbled in the distance, as if the city itself sensed the storm gathering on my doorstep.
