Chapter 8

The mansion felt heavier that evening, as if the walls themselves were holding their breath, waiting for something to happen. I wandered the quiet hallways, unsure if I was looking for answers or just trying to escape the tightness in my chest. Dante's words from earlier that morning - "You remind me of someone" - replayed over and over in my mind, a riddle I couldn't solve.

I paused in front of one of the large windows overlooking the gardens. The night was dark, but the moon cast a pale glow, illuminating the perfectly trimmed hedges and marble fountains. The calm outside was a cruel contrast to the storm raging inside me. I had so many questions, and yet, I didn't know if I dared ask them.

I barely noticed Dante's approach until he was standing behind me, silent and commanding, like a shadow that had materialized from nowhere. His presence made the air thick; I could feel it pressing against my skin.

"Elena," he said softly, and my name on his lips made my heart skip, a strange, unbidden flutter.

I turned to face him, trying to mask the nervousness in my voice. "Yes?"

He studied me with a steady intensity, his dark eyes scanning every line of my face, every flicker of emotion. "Do you know why I bought you?"

I swallowed hard, my throat dry. I had asked him that before, but now the question felt heavier, loaded with implication. "You... said I reminded you of someone," I said cautiously. "But why? Who... who are you talking about?"

Dante's jaw tightened, and for a moment, I thought he might walk away, leaving me to my tormenting curiosity. But instead, he stepped closer, and the tension between us thickened, almost unbearable.

"You remind me of someone I lost a long time ago," he said finally, his voice quieter now, almost a whisper meant only for me. "Someone I... I should have protected, but I failed. And now, seeing you... it's like I've been given a second chance."

I blinked, confused. My pulse raced, caught between fear and a strange, magnetic pull. "A second chance?" I echoed. "You... you mean me?"

His eyes never left mine, dark and stormy, full of an intensity I could barely comprehend. "Yes," he said. "But understand this: you are not a replacement. You are... something else. Something real. And yet, something that makes me remember everything I lost - everything I swore I'd never let happen again."

My breath caught in my chest. The weight of his words pressed on me like a physical force. I had stepped into his world without understanding it, without knowing its rules or its dangers, and now I realized just how deep I had fallen. He was dangerous, yes, but more than that - he was complicated, haunted, and somehow... fiercely protective.

"You're talking in riddles," I whispered, my voice trembling despite my efforts to stay composed. "I don't... I don't understand what any of this means."

Dante's expression softened just slightly, a fleeting crack in the wall of control he maintained around him. "You will," he said simply. "In time, you will understand. But for now... you must remember one thing: in this world, you survive by knowing the rules, by trusting very few, and by being aware of the dangers you can't see."

I nodded, though my heart thumped wildly. Trust him? Fear him? Desire him? All these emotions clashed inside me, leaving me dizzy and disoriented. I had no idea how to place him - whether he was a savior, a captor, or something in between.

Another man appeared at the doorway - tall, dark-haired, sharp-featured - his presence commanding attention even without a word. Luca. He glanced at Dante, then at me, his eyes wide with something close to disbelief.

"You're serious about her?" Luca asked quietly, his voice edged with tension.

Dante's gaze didn't waver. "She reminds me of what matters," he said, carefully measured, as if each word was a weapon and a shield. "She is under my protection. And no one... no one... will touch her without consequences."

Luca swallowed, nodding reluctantly. His glance lingered on me before he quietly left the room, leaving Dante and me alone again.

I felt a shiver crawl up my spine. Everything about him - the way he moved, the way he spoke, the dangerous calm in his voice - pulled at me. I wanted to run, to hide, yet a part of me wanted to stay, to see what lay behind those stormy eyes, to uncover the man behind the empire.

"Why me?" I asked softly, almost pleading. "Why now?"

Dante stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. I could feel the heat of him even in the dim light, the intensity of his gaze burning into my very thoughts. "Because you are here, and you are alive," he said. "And because you make me remember... things I thought I had buried forever. Things I will not lose again."

My heart beat erratically. I didn't know whether to be terrified or grateful, to recoil or step closer. I only knew that the pull between us was undeniable, magnetic, impossible to ignore.

Finally, he turned, walking toward the window. The moonlight cast sharp shadows across his face, highlighting the dark planes of his jaw, the intensity in his eyes. I wanted to reach out, to stop him, to demand answers - but I didn't. I watched him, knowing that every secret he carried was part of the danger I had willingly stepped into.

And I realized, with a cold certainty: my life had changed forever. I was no longer simply Elena Rossi - I was Elena Rossi under Dante Moretti's world, under his rules, under his control, and perhaps... under his watchful, consuming gaze.

Cliffhanger:

I wanted to know the truth, but Dante had only given me fragments.

And somewhere deep inside, I knew the real reason he had bought me... the reason he looked at me as he did... was far more dangerous, far more personal, and far more... complicated... than I could ever imagine.

Reborn To Swap Husbands With My Sister Novel Cover
8.2
The sensation of falling wasn't like flying; it was heavy, violent, and smelled of burning flesh. Above us, on the crumbling balcony of the Sears manor, Duke Cato Sears turned his back, shielding his cousin Bianca from the smoke as he walked away, leaving my sister Blossom and me to drop into the abyss. As the darkness slammed shut like an iron door, I realized my entire life had been a cruel script written by the people I called family. In my first life, I was the sacrificial lamb of the Dawson manor, sold to a man who eventually watched me die without blinking. My sister Blossom had pushed me into Cato's arms to avoid his rumors, only to laugh when the fire finally consumed us both. My father had measured my value like a piece of livestock, and my step-grandmother didn't even acknowledge my existence while I was being led to the slaughter. I died in that fire, feeling the heat scorch my skin and the weight of a hatred so potent it tasted like bile. I spent twenty years being the weak, manipulated shadow of a girl, only to end up as nothing more than a phantom scorch mark on a "hero's" estate. I couldn't understand why my own blood treated my life like a game they could discard. The injustice of it all burned hotter than the flames that took my last breath. Then, I sat up, sucking in air that tasted of lavender and air conditioning, not smoke. I was back in my bedroom, three days before the engagement ball that ruined my life. Blossom stood at the door, her "sweet" mask slipping as she tried to manipulate me into the Duke's path again. She thought she was the only one who had come back, but she didn't realize that this time, I was going to let her have exactly what she wanted: the Duke, the bankruptcy, and the living hell that awaited her in that house.
