Chapter 3

A black Ghost Bird transport helicopter hovered silently outside the warehouse, its rotors barely disturbing the humid jungle air. As Avery carried Ethan out into the clearing, a team of medics in unmarked tactical gear immediately moved forward.

She gently handed her brother over to a calm, professional woman who began checking him for injuries and speaking in a soothing voice.

Louis, her second-in-command, approached and gave a crisp salute. "Commander. The area is secure."

Avery's face was a mask of cold composure once more. The brief moment of vulnerability was gone, locked away. She nodded, her gaze shifting back to the warehouse where her men were dragging out the bound trafficker.

"Get him on the bird," she ordered. "I want our best interrogator to have a chat with him. I need to know everything about the Chimera Syndicate's operation here."

"Understood," Louis replied, falling into step beside her. "We've already swept their comms. This was a new branch, specializing in high-value targets."

"High-value?" Avery's eyes narrowed to dangerous slits. "My brother is not a commodity."

Louis was quick to clarify. "They didn't know who he was, Commander. The order was for a 'son of a promising tech firm CEO from Crestview City'. They were planning to ransom him to fund their other operations."

Crestview City.

The name hit Avery like a physical blow. Five years. She hadn't set foot in that city, hadn't even allowed herself to think about it for five years. The place where everything had been taken from her.

She pushed the thought aside and walked to where Ethan was sitting on the helicopter's ramp, a thermal blanket wrapped around his shoulders. She knelt in front of him.

"Ethan, did they hurt you?" Her voice was soft again, for his ears only.

He shook his head, but his small hand shot out and gripped the fabric of her tactical pants, holding on like he was afraid she'd disappear.

Avery's heart ached. She pulled off her tactical gloves, her bare hand covering his. His skin was cold.

She stood and turned back to Louis, her commander's voice returning. "Arrange a clean transport for the children. Send them to the nearest US embassy and ensure they get home safely. Erase all records of our involvement." She paused, her voice dropping lower. "Especially my involvement."

Louis nodded, his expression serious. "Phoenix Protocol. We were never here."

"Good." She looked at the bodies being zipped into bags. "Sanitize the scene. Make it look like an internal gang dispute. Nothing traces back."

She detached a small, hardened drive from her vest and handed it to him. "This contains everything I pulled from their local server. I want a full breakdown of the Chimera Syndicate's network. Every member, every safe house, every financial backer."

Louis took the drive, weighing it in his hand. "Commander, this is a global network. Taking them all down..."

Avery cut him off. Her voice was as cold and sharp as breaking ice. "They targeted my family. This is no longer a mission, Louis. It's a declaration of war."

She boarded the transport and sat beside Ethan, pulling the blanket tighter around him. The helicopter's ramp began to rise, sealing them inside.

As the Ghost Bird lifted silently into the night sky, Ethan leaned his head against her shoulder. His voice was small, muffled by her vest. "Avery... those men... when did you learn to do that?"

She stroked his hair, her gaze lost in the darkness outside the small window. "In the past five years," she said quietly, the words tasting like ash. "I learned how to survive."

On the ground, Louis watched the helicopter disappear. He keyed his comms, his voice low and professional as he directed the clean-up. But to himself, he muttered, "Welcome back to the world, Commander. It's about to get messy."

Inside the transport, soaring high above the jungle canopy, Avery opened a secure communication link. She bypassed military networks, routing the signal through a series of civilian satellites until it reached Crestview City.

Her finger hovered over the contact labeled 'Home'. She took a deep, steadying breath, then pressed the call button.

It rang for a long time. Finally, a woman's voice answered, thick with exhaustion and unshed tears. "Hello?"

Avery closed her eyes. The sound of her mother's voice was a physical pain, a reminder of all the time she had lost. She forced her own voice to be calm, to be the anchor her family needed.

"Mom... it's me. I have Ethan. We're coming home."
