Chapter 3

A week later, on a bright Wednesday afternoon, Alyssa stood before a skyscraper that pierced the heart of Midtown Manhattan. The sun glinted off the glass facade, forcing her to squint. This was the headquarters of the Carter Group, a modern-day fortress.

She smoothed the front of her blazer, a conservative navy suit she'd bought specifically for this meeting. It was armor, meant to make her look older, more credible.

The lobby was a cavern of marble and gold. A receptionist with a polite, professional smile looked up as she approached.

"May I help you, miss?"

"I'm here to see Mr. Carter. My name is Alyssa Kirk."

The receptionist's fingers flew across her keyboard. A moment later, her practiced smile faltered, replaced by an expression of genuine deference. "Of course, Ms. Kirk. Right this way."

She personally escorted Alyssa to a private elevator, the one reserved for the CEO. As the car ascended, the city skyline falling away beneath her, Alyssa mentally rehearsed her lines one last time. This was the most critical step in her entire plan.

The elevator opened onto the top floor. A trim, efficient young man was waiting. "Ms. Kirk? I'm Luke Miller, Mr. Carter's assistant. He's expecting you."

He led her to a set of massive double doors and opened one for her.

Ayaan was sitting in a leather chair, his back to her, looking out at the panoramic view of the city. He didn't turn.

"Close the door," he said.

She did as she was told. The heavy door clicked shut, encasing them in a profound, unnerving silence. The only sound was the frantic thumping of her own heart.

She walked to the enormous desk and placed a file folder on the polished surface.

"Mr. Carter," she said, her voice steady. "This is my gesture of sincerity."

He swiveled his chair around. His eyes fell on the bold letters printed on the folder's label: STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP AND OFFSPRING CULTIVATION AGREEMENT.

For the first time since she'd met him, his face registered an expression of genuine astonishment.

He didn't touch the file. He simply leaned back, steepling his fingers beneath his chin, his stormy gray eyes fixing her with an analytical stare. "Explain."

Alyssa took a deep breath. "I've broken my engagement to Eddie," she began, watching his face for any reaction.

Nothing. He merely gestured for her to continue.

"My family intends to control my inheritance through marriage. I need an ally, someone more powerful than them, to protect me until I turn twenty-three and can legally take full control of my assets. And... I need a child."

"A child?" His voice was laced with derision. "The line of women in this city willing to bear my child would stretch from here to the Brooklyn Bridge. What makes you think you're special?"

She met his arrogant gaze without flinching and played her trump card. "Because I know your secret, Mr. Carter. I know you've been diagnosed with severe asthenozoospermia. I know it's nearly impossible for you to have a child of your own."

The air in the room instantly dropped twenty degrees. A lethal stillness emanated from him, a silent, murderous rage that wrapped around her, squeezing the breath from her lungs.

"How do you know that?" His voice was dangerously quiet, a calm sea before a tsunami. It was his most closely guarded secret, known only to a handful of people within the Carter family.

Her heart hammered against her ribs, but she couldn't back down now. "I have my sources. That's not what's important. What's important is that I can help you."

She pushed a second folder across the desk. It contained a detailed report on her own physical health, along with a medical journal article on a rare genetic compatibility that could, in theory, dramatically increase the chances of conception in cases like his.

"I am in perfect health. And I possess a specific genetic marker that, theoretically, gives us a significantly higher chance of success. We can treat it as a scientific experiment. Or a gamble."

He stared at her, his eyes boring into her as if trying to see the intricate gears of her mind turning. This woman wasn't just audacious; she was terrifyingly meticulous.

He was silent for a long time. So long that she started to think she had miscalculated, that she had pushed him too far.

Then, he smiled. It was a cold, humorless stretching of his lips. "Interesting. Very interesting."

He picked up the first file, the agreement, and scanned it. The terms were clear, brutally transactional. He would provide protection. She would provide an heir. After the birth of the child, their association would be terminated. She would walk away with nothing but the child.

Ayaan picked up a pen and scrawled his signature at the bottom of the page.

He pushed the document back toward her. "I'll give you a chance," he said, his voice flat. "But understand this. If it turns out you're wasting my time, you will bear the consequences."

Alyssa stared at the bold, sharp signature. The immense weight that had been crushing her chest for weeks finally lifted. She had done it.

She collected the file and stood. "A pleasure doing business with you, Mr. Carter."

As she turned to leave, he spoke again. "I'm not curious how you found out about my condition. I am curious why you chose me."

Alyssa paused at the door, her back still to him. "Because in New York," she said softly, "you are the strongest. And my enemies deserve nothing less than the strongest opponent."
