Chapter 1

Isabella Green grunted, feeling anxious. She cursed the traffic a million times, for getting clumped up on a day like this. She glanced at her wristwatch and sighed restlessly.

She's going to be late on her first day as an intern Nurse.

Eventually, the taxi pulled up in front of the city hospital and she pulled out a rumpled dollar note and gave it to the driver and hurriedly dashed into the hospital.

She was late already and this was supposed to be her first day as an intern student. She walked briskly into the reception and presented her letter for resumption.

"The conference hall, take the turn by the left and use the elevator," the receptionist directed. Isabella nodded and thanked the receptionist before storming off.

As she arrived at the top of the elevator, she heard her name "Isabella Green" she swallowed a lump in her throat as she quickly answered "Right here sir"

She was breathing hard and fast. She didn't expect that she would arrive at the nick of time, she raised her head to glance in the direction her name was mentioned and their eyes locked:

Isabella's facial expression immediately turned pale. She shivered and her fingers trembled. For some seconds, she lost her composure as she glared at him, dazed.

Him?

What is he doing in a hospital coat?

Is he a doctor?

"First day at work and you're already late?" He asked, sneer and resentment laced his words. What is she doing in his hospital? He didn't know her name otherwise, he would never have approved her application for internship in his hospital.

"I...I...I'm sorry sir" Isabella stuttered. She couldn't compose herself. Her palms became sweaty and she stared at the floor, completely flushed.

"This is going to be the first and obviously the last time, you will be pardoned for late coming" he declared and turned to whisper a few things into the ears of his subordinate before walking away.

As soon as he left, the matron turned to Isabella "My name is Adele Dai and I am the head of the Nurses department in this hospital and I specifically welcome you to City Hospital" she smiled and shook hands with her. The other employees did the same and introduced themselves.

This woman Isabella Green must have carried a favour on her personality to have been pardoned by Dr. Rian. He doesn't accept lateness not in the slightest form, such an employee is immediately fired.

To have pardoned this intern student meant, he woke up on the other side of his bed.

Isabella appreciated everyone and said she looked forward to having a great time working with all of them. As soon as she was shown her cubicle in the nurses station, Isabella sighed for relief.

She felt she had developed a migraine already. But how is he a doctor too?

Dr. Rian stride into his executive lounge when Dr. Rodrigo stepped in after him. He watched as Rian pulled off his hospital coat, and sighed softly, massaging the bridge between his eyes.

Despite turning his back to him, Rodrigo knew something was up. What's there about the intern Nurse? He saw everything and if nobody else knows, Rian knows he has eyes for details and he can tell something is off by a single glance.

"Is there something I need to know?" Rodrigo asked, walking over to the refrigerator and pulled out a canned fruit juice. He smirks, feeling some hesitation in his friend.

"Know? Like what?" Rian Whiteson shrugged, trying to act calm and composed. He didn't sell out anything about his encounter with that intern Nurse, right?

Rodrigo turned abruptly and faced him "Don't act dump with me Rian. I meant, you should tell me about that intern Nurse" He bluntly declared.

"There's nothing to say except that we have another intern Nurse in this hospital that goes by the name Isabella Green " Rian snapped at him and frowned.

He wish there was no past or history between them.

"You've never been a good liar, Rian. Why do you feel you can become one now? What's up between you and that intern Nurse that made her obtain your generous pardon on the first day at work?

Why the exception? Why didn't you send her back immediately? You've always been strict and arrogant, why do I feel when you saw her, there was a moment of hesitation in your eyes, tell me Rian?" Rodrigo demanded, fixing his gaze on him.

"She's the woman!" Rian informed and gnashed his teeth. There are some actions that one gets involved in and later regrets everything. That's exactly how he was feeling at the moment.

"The woman..." Rodrigo trailed off, did a mental calculation and continued "your one night stand?" He asked and Rian nodded.

A smile spread across Rodrigo's face. "Do you feel uncomfortable with her working with you?" He asked, a Megawatt smile on his face. He loves the looks on his friend's face.

"Working with me is nothing compared to the level of resentment I felt towards that woman. Don't you understand what I am saying, she's a prostitute, a whore. How can I keep such a woman working in my hospital"

"Common off it, dude. At that moment when you were drugged and your dick was hard and erect, fully controlling your mind and desire, you didn't realise the woman you were going to drive that dick into was a prostitute, did you?" Rodrigo reprimanded him.

"I already told you, that was a mistake. I needed a cunt to relieve myself and I got one. I paid her handsomely than what she can earn in an entire year, but getting fucked by everything in trousers...is a filthy, dude.

It's never going to happen again but her presence resents me greatly" Rian spat out in disgust. He was drunk, but more like he was drugged, otherwise he would have gone for a more decent woman in times of need and not a public hole.

"No matter what has happened, respect her professionally and don't let the past affect your working with her" Rodrigo advised and stepped out.

As he stepped out, he walked towards the nurses station, Mrs Adele Dai was busy sorting out the surgical materials for sterilisation when Dr. Rodrigo walked in.

"Dr Rodrigo..." Mrs Adele said trailing off.

"Mrs Adele, I want the intern student to be working with Dr. Rian and myself for now" he instructed with a smile. He needed to study this woman that Rian has developed so much resentment for.

She'd already been assigned to Dr. Rian for this week. From next week, she'll be working with you directly" Matron Adele explained.

Rodrigo nodded, and left. As soon as he left, Matron Adele sighed softly, what's there about this intern Nurse?

Are the doctors already crushing on her?

The Manhattan sky hung like slate above the cemetery, heavy with unshed rain. I stood at my mother's graveside, my black dress absorbing the chill that seeped through the October air. The mourners—New York's elite, gathered in their funeral finery—formed a somber half-circle around the fresh earth. I had arranged every detail of this service with the same precision I brought to everything: white roses, my mother's favorite hymn, a eulogy that captured her grace without revealing her private struggles. For once, I had done something that was solely mine, not an extension of Conrad Morrison's perfect socialite wife. But then I saw it—a flash of scarlet cutting through the sea of black. My breath caught as Billie Cooper stepped out from behind the crowd, her red cocktail dress a deliberate wound against the mourning. She clung to Conrad's arm, her crimson lips curved into a smile meant only for me. The whispers began immediately, rippling through the crowd like wind through dry leaves. 'She's wearing *red* to a funeral?' 'A widow's funeral, no less...' 'Conrad's new...' I felt their eyes on me, waiting for the perfect wife to crack.

The cramping started at three in the morning, sharp and relentless, tearing through my abdomen like broken glass. By the time I stumbled into the emergency room at Mercy General, blood was already soaking through my nightgown, and the world had narrowed to a tunnel of fluorescent lights and sterile white walls. "Mrs. Richardson?" The nurse's voice seemed to come from underwater. "We need to get you into a room immediately." The next few hours blurred together in a haze of medical terms I didn't want to understand. Miscarriage. Complete. Inevitable. Each word landed like a physical blow, stealing what little breath I had left. When Dr.

The crystal glasses clinked as I arranged them in perfect alignment on the dining table. Tonight was special—our first official family dinner since Preston and I had announced our engagement. My father had flown in from Chicago specifically for this occasion, and Preston's parents were driving up from their estate in the Hamptons. "Perfect timing," I murmured, adjusting the white orchids in the centerpiece. "Everything's ready." Preston appeared behind me, his cologne—Tom Ford, always Tom Ford—reaching me before he did. "You've outdone yourself, Sara." His hands settled on my shoulders, fingers brushing my collarbone in that possessive way that once made me melt. "No one would guess you ran a board meeting this afternoon." I turned to face him, taking in his perfectly pressed shirt and practiced smile. "Your parents will be here any minute. Is everything prepared in the kitchen?" "Everything's under control." He kissed my forehead, but his eyes darted to his phone when it buzzed. "Just a quick message from work." My father arrived first, bearing his usual gift of rare vintage wine.

After three days and three nights of agony, Melissa finally gave birth to a baby boy. Exhausted and utterly spent, she still longed to hear her husband’s praise. She’d shake her head and tell him it hadn’t hurt. But what met her was Tyler’s icy voice. Outside the birthing chamber, he cast a disdainful glance at the infant and ordered his subordinate without hesitation, “Get rid of it. What use is a simpleton’s child? I will not have a fool for a son and heir.” The man hesitated. “Sir, this is your firstborn. The manor needs an heir…” Tyler waved a hand, cutting him off. “Years ago, she became this imbecile to save me. I will honor my pledge to keep her for a lifetime—but my children? She has no right to bear them.” “The heir to this manor must come from an intelligent woman like Barbara. Anything less would only tarnish our family’s name.” Melissa froze. She shook her head violently, but the dam broke, and tears streamed down her cheeks. She hadn’t been born a fool. Her brother once told her she’d been a celebrated beauty and wit in the capital. It was only three years ago, saving her then-fiancé Tyler, that she’d struck her head. When she woke, her mind was that of a child. She’d feared he would abandon her because of it. But he hadn’t. He married her with great fanfare, a story that once charmed the capital. She’d asked him, “Does this embarrass you?” He said no—and she, in her innocence, believed him. She didn’t understand why he’d changed. The man who once loved her so deeply now looked at her with contempt, even rejecting the child she’d borne him. She tried to rise, to stop them from harming her baby, but the maidservants held her down. “I’m not a fool! I’m not! Let me save my child!” “Madam, my lord said you must rest.” Weak from the ordeal, how could she fight them? Darkness swamped her vision, and she fainted. When she woke again, Tyler was stroking her hair gently, his face alight with pleasure. “Barbara has come. She wishes to see you.” The mere arrival of his distant cousin Barbara could make him smile like that. Even in her diminished state, that smile felt like a blade to Melissa’s eyes. She seized his hand. “The baby… where is my child?” Then Barbara entered, cradling a small dog. Her voice was soft, coaxing. “Sister, look. Here is your child.” Melissa stared, bewildered. She was simple, but she knew she’d given birth to a human, not a puppy. “No… no… That’s not my child!” She clutched at Tyler, desperate for him to set things right. His expression stiffened, but he nodded. “Melissa, this is your child.” Hope shattered. She looked from Tyler to the puppy in Barbara’s arms. So they thought her a fool they could deceive at will. She began to thrash, frantic to find her real child. Tyler’s patience snapped. “Melissa, if you keep this up, I’ll have you confined. Until you learn to behave.” Despair tore a sob from her. He wanted to lock her away again. Every time she vexed him, he’d shut her in until she yielded, contrite and compliant. But not this time. Her struggles only grew wilder. Utterly exasperated, Tyler stood and turned to leave with a dismissive wave. “If she refuses to be obedient,” he told the servants, “do not bring her any food.” The moment he left, Barbara dropped her act. “You want to know where your child is, sister? I’ll tell you.” “I mentioned the ginkgo tree in the back garden looked a bit sickly. Brother Tyler ordered it fertilized. They say nothing feeds a tree like fresh blood and bone.” Melissa’s pupils contracted. She understood. They had buried her child beneath that tree. She refused to believe Tyler would do this to her. That night, when all were asleep, she slipped out to the ginkgo tree. She dug and dug, her fingernails splitting, until her hands struck a small, cold form in the earth. Her child. Tyler had truly buried him here. Frantically, she wiped the dirt from the tiny body and pressed her ear to its cold cheek. She remembered the strong, healthy cry at birth. Now, the baby lay motionless, silent. “Please cry. Just once, for your mother. Please?” No response ever came. Desolation finally claimed her. “Aaaah—!” Her wails brought the household running. Tyler took in her disheveled, dirt-streaked state, and his lip curled in disgust. This was no lady of his manor. His frown deepened. Seeing him, Melissa grasped at a final straw of hope. “Husband, I beg you, save our child. He doesn’t move, he doesn’t cry. Please save him. I’ll be good, I promise, just save him…” Tyler crouched down, his tone deceptively gentle. “Be good, Melissa. The child is dead. You shouldn’t have brought him out here in the middle of the night. It disturbs his rest.” She shook her head, voice choked. “No. I didn’t bring him. She said… you buried him here. To feed the tree.” Her finger pointed accusingly at Barbara. Barbara wore an expression of pure innocence. “Sister, what are you saying? How could I say such a thing? I prepared a fine coffin for
