Chapter 3

Jenny's face scrunched up as she slumped into Edward's arms, asking slowly, "Mr. Cooper, did I do something wrong? I'm afraid of going with Ms. Strallen. She might get too agitated and hurt me…"

Edward hugged her tightly as he eyed me impatiently.

"Why are you yelling at Jenny? You scared her! Look, it's just a small procedural mistake!

"Jenny has a stronger sense of responsibility than most people. Do you really want her to feel guilty over such a small thing for the rest of her life?"

My phone buzzed at that moment. All of them were from business partners, demanding answers.

[Ms. Strallen, the project is about to start. What do you mean, your identity information is invalid?]

[You didn't run off with the money, did you? Get over here and explain yourself, or I'm calling the police!]

Message after message, filled with suspicion and accusations.

I held the phone up in front of Edward, yelling hysterically, "If they call the police, I will end up in prison! You call this 'a small matter'? Edward, you're the highest authority in the company right now. Take Jenny and apologize to the clients at once!"

Edward frowned. He was just about to get up when Jenny refused. She said with a tone of faux innocence, "You signed the contracts with them. Even if they want to sue, they'll sue you. What does this have anything to do with Mr. Cooper?"

Then, she said to Edward, "Mr. Cooper, you don't know how these contracts came by. What if you had used your body to… Well, even Mr. Cooper can't help you then!"

Her eyes gleamed innocently, but they were filled with malice.

Edward sized me up and said, "Jenny is right. You should take the documents and apologize to them. I promised Jenny that you'd be responsible for any problems. I can't go back on my promise, can I?"

I was so furious at their shamelessness that I almost laughed.

They truly believed that no outcome would affect them.

Unfortunately for them, I was not going to let them have their way this time.

"You won't go? Fine. I quit. I won't go either. Whether the client calls the police or the project gets stalled–I don't care! If I'm going down, none of you are going to get away with it either!"

I called the chairman, Richard Walters, and told him about my deregistered identity and intention of resigning.

Richard came to the office in rage, forcing Edward and Jenny to apologize to the clients and explain everything.

Richard did not want me to quit in such a rash manner, though. He gave me a month to think about it.

In that month, Edward brought Jenny along to visit every client.

Unsurprisingly, every client would text me about her.

[What kind of unprofessional intern does your company hire? She came to my house asking if I'm the legal wife or the mistress!]

[That intern of yours is outrageous! Because of her, our entire building lost power for a whole day!]

[Has Edward lost his mind? Why is he protecting her? If it weren't for your sake, I wouldn't be working with your company!]

It seemed like Jenny had caused quite a lot of trouble herself. I consoled every single client, telling them about me resigning.

I told them that it did not matter if they did not sign the project. I was going to make Edward pay for his foolish decision to protect Jenny!

A month later, I still had not changed my mind about working with them. I still insisted on resigning.

The moment I entered the office, Jenny shrilled, "Mr. Cooper, we're doomed! That client from yesterday said I falsified the price! They're going to sue me!"

She added, "For the last project, I wanted to earn more money for the company. Zoe had written five million on the contract, but I changed it to twenty million…"

Downstairs, the officers from the Securities and Exchange Commission had arrived.

Edward looked overwhelmed, yet he still gently consoled Jenny.

Market prices were transparent.

Jenny had dared to quote four times the price, so of course, the client called the police.

She deserved it.

The officers arrived, planning to take Jenny back to be questioned.

Suddenly, she pointed at me, who had just entered the office, and yelled, "Zoe Strallen is the person you want! She drafted the contract! She also forced me to get the client's signature! It's all her fault!"
