Chapter 3

"Russell Vane," I read aloud, keeping my eyes fixed on the glowing tablet screen.

"The private equity vulture?" Theresa asked from the driver's seat. She steered the black sedan around a sharp corner, heading toward the downtown district. "I thought he operated strictly out of Chicago."

"He does," I replied. "But his grudges cross state lines."

I opened the attached financial schedule in the email. Row after row of shadow equity agreements filled the display.

"Look at this routing data," I said, holding the device up so she could see the screen in the rearview mirror. "Vane is funneling capital into Crane Industries through three offshore shell companies."

Theresa glanced at the screen before returning her focus to the road. "Why does that name sound so familiar?"

"Because seven years ago, he sat in the leather chair opposite my desk at the Hale Trust. He sweated through his custom suit, begging for a fifty-million-dollar bailout to cover a massive short squeeze."

"You denied him."

"I laughed at him," I corrected, my tone hardening. "His portfolio was a toxic wasteland. I told him the Hale Trust doesn't finance sinking ships. He swore he would make me regret the insult."

"Looks like he finally found his way in."

"He found a weak link," I said. "My husband."

I scrolled down to the final page of the attachment. Vane had outlined the entire acquisition strategy in plain text.

"Vane is using Gerald to drain Crane Industries," I explained. "He promised Gerald a lucrative buyout to get him on board. But look at these terms. Vane is positioning his firm to swallow Crane for pennies the second the cash flow stops."

"And Gerald signed this?"

"Gerald thinks he is outsmarting the market. He believes he found a brilliant silent partner."

Twenty minutes later, the electronic lock of our penthouse suite beeped green. Theresa pushed the heavy mahogany door open, revealing a makeshift command center. Laptops, encrypted servers, and stacks of legal folders covered the glass dining table.

"Bring up the bridge loan," I ordered, tossing my coat onto the velvet sofa.

Theresa dropped her keys and sat at the main terminal. "The eighteen-million-dollar injection?"

"Yes. The final document I signed before my car mysteriously went off the cliff."

Theresa typed rapidly. A scanned PDF appeared on the largest monitor. The title read: Hale Coastal Estate Mortgage Agreement.

"Look at the collateral transfer clause," I said, walking up behind her chair and pointing at the third paragraph.

Theresa leaned closer to the screen. "Gerald reassigned the debt," she read, her voice dropping. "He sold the note to Vanguard Holdings."

"Which is a subsidiary of Vane's parent company."

"Gerald handed your grandmother's estate to Russell Vane." Theresa spun her chair around to face me. "He handed Vane the exact lever needed to crush Crane Industries."

"He thinks it was a genius refinancing move." I crossed my arms. "But Vane is just waiting for the first missed payment to seize the estate and force Crane into total liquidation."

"You mortgaged your bloodline for a man who was already planning your funeral."

The memory forced its way to the front of my mind. The ink was barely dry on that eighteen-million-dollar contract. I stood outside Gerald's study, holding the lifeline he begged for. Through the cracked oak door, his voice slithered out. Just wait a little longer, Sabrina. Once she's gone, everything will fall into place.

"He traded my life for cash," I said, shoving the memory away. "He traded my life for a trap. And now I hold the trigger."

"What is our next move?"

"I need the authentication certificate for the real ring," I said, touching the heavy silver chain hidden beneath my collar. "File it in the secure vault immediately."

"Consider it done. What else?"

"I want the hard copies of our thirty-eight percent senior debt in Crane. Every single promissory note. Stack them on this desk by midnight."

"That is over two hundred million dollars in callable bonds," Theresa said, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "If we initiate the collection process, Gerald will have exactly seventy-two hours to produce the cash."

"He doesn't have it," I said. "He spent his liquid reserves buying Sabrina a red sports car and feeding Daniel's trust fund."

"When the notice hits his desk, he will panic."

"He will call Vane," I corrected. "He will beg his silent partner for another bridge loan. And Vane will demand the Hale coastal estate as immediate payment."

"But Vane doesn't know you hold the senior debt," Theresa realized, a rare smile touching her lips. "He thinks Crane's obligations are scattered among a dozen minor creditors."

"Vane thinks he is playing chess against a dead woman." I walked over to the glass table and tapped the main monitor. "When Vane moves to seize my grandmother's estate, we execute the senior debt call. We bankrupt Crane Industries before Vane can file the paperwork."

"We trap them both inside the burning building."

"Exactly."

I unclasped the chain at my neck. The real platinum band dropped into my palm. It carried the weight of four generations of Hale women.

I slid the metal onto my left ring finger. It fit perfectly.

Walking over to the floor-to-ceiling mirror near the balcony, I examined my reflection.

"You haven't worn that in front of anyone," Theresa noted, watching me from the desk.

"Gerald hated it," I replied, staring at the brilliant white flash on my hand. "He said the platinum overshadowed his success. He wanted me to wear the gaudy three-carat diamond he bought with his first dividend check. He needed the world to see what he provided."

"So you locked your own legacy away to protect his ego."

"I wore it only in the dark," I said, tracing the intricate floral engraving on the inside of the band. "Alone in my study, to remember who I was before I became Mrs. Gerald Crane."

I let my hand drop to my side. The metal felt heavy, anchoring me to the present.

"The replica I gave Sabrina is already tarnishing," I stated. "Silver-plating over cheap brass. It turns the skin green if you sweat."

"Fitting," Theresa muttered.

A sharp knock on the suite door interrupted the quiet room.

Theresa stood up, pulling a sleek black handgun from her waistband before approaching the entryway. She checked the security monitor, lowered the weapon, and opened the door. One of her operatives stood in the hallway, holding a thick package.

They exchanged a few hushed words before Theresa closed the door and walked back to the dining table.

"What did they send?" I asked.

"The operative intercepted their mail." Theresa ripped the package open. "They didn't wait."

"When?"

"Next Friday." Theresa pulled out a thick, cream-colored envelope. "Madam, the engagement party invitations are printed. The venue is the top floor of the Crane Building."

She handed the envelope over. I took it, feeling the rough texture of the heavy cardstock against my thumb.

"There is something else," Theresa added, her tone sharpening. She reached into the package and pulled out a glossy photograph.

"What is this?"

"Our operative visited the cemetery this morning." Theresa held the photo out. "They altered the family plot."

I took the picture. The granite slab no longer bore my name. It had been violently sanded down, leaving a blank, scarred patch of stone right next to Gerald's cleanly engraved letters.

"They ground your name off the family tombstone," Theresa said.

My finger stopped moving, pressing hard into the gold-foiled date on the invitation.
