Chapter 1

Debora Finley's hands were cuffed to the cold metal table, the restraints biting into her wrists until they were raw and red.

Cold sweat soaked through the cheap cotton of her T-shirt, clinging tightly to her skin. Her heart hammered against her ribs, like a frantic bird trapped inside a cage of bone, desperately trying to break free.

Through the thick bulletproof glass, she saw him. Brandon Figueroa. The man who had once sworn to love her for the rest of his life.

He wore a perfectly tailored suit, his hair styled flawlessly. But his eyes—his eyes darted everywhere except toward her.

"Why?" The word tore through her throat like an open wound, as if she had swallowed sandpaper. She screamed it over and over again. "You knew I was framed! Why did you lie on the witness stand?"

Brandon's lips moved, but no sound came out. A delicate figure quietly stepped beside him, slipping an arm around his.

Laura Finley. Debora's half-sister.

Laura lifted her perfectly made-up face, her blue eyes shimmering with triumphant malice. She raised her left hand, and the enormous diamond on her ring finger flashed, a blinding shard of light meant to intimidate. Her nails were painted a vicious blood red.

"Debora, just give up." Laura's voice was sickly sweet, winding through the intercom like a venomous snake. "Brandon is my fiancé now. He is also the new legal counsel for the Martinez family. You should be happy for him."

Debora's gaze remained fixed on Brandon, desperately searching his face for a flicker of guilt, a trace of remorse. Anything.

He only stared at the floor, his face pale.

Laura let out a soft, cruel laugh. "You know, I love seeing you like this. The great Debora Finley, the top student at Columbia Law, the rising star of the DA's office... now you're nothing more than a dog in a cage."

Her words struck like a physical blow.

"You'll get used to it." Laura's red lips curled into a smile. "After all, you have three whole years to adjust. And Brandon and I will be enjoying your life for you out here."

Humiliation and rage burned through her chest. She lunged forward, the handcuffs crashing against the table with a deafening clang as she tried to claw her way through the glass.

Laura was holding a newspaper. The front page showed a glamorous photo of her and Brandon, announcing their engagement.

"See, sister? Don't we look perfect together?" Laura said softly, pushing the newspaper toward her.

Debora said nothing. Her eyes were like shards of ice.

Laura's smile froze, twisting into a mask of pure jealousy. "What do you think you are? Just some poor girl who clawed her way up through scholarships! Why did Brandon love you? What made you think you deserved to enter the best law firm?"

Brandon appeared beside her in the dream. He grabbed Debora's wrist, his fingers digging into the jagged scar there.

"Debora, forget me. It's better this way."

She remembered that scar. The real one.

The day she was arrested, when she reached for the dashcam footage that could have proven her innocence, it was Brandon who shoved her to the ground. It was Brandon who ground the heel of his expensive shoe into her wrist, crushing her bone and destroying the last piece of hope she had in a single, brutal act.

"Debora Finley, on the charge of DUI manslaughter, is hereby sentenced to three years in prison..."

The dream ended with the judge's cold voice echoing through the void.

Debora's eyes snapped open. She was back in her room. She gasped for air, her lungs burning.

Outside, the sky was bruised purple. Most of the city was still silent.

With trembling fingers, she reached for her left wrist. Even after three years, she could still feel the uneven ridge of scar tissue beneath her skin. It ached whenever it rained.

She looked around the tiny room, barely 150 square feet. A bed, a dresser, a small table. Eight hundred dollars a month for this box she called home. This was her entire world.

Her lawyer's license was revoked. The high society that had once courted her now shunned her. She was no longer a promising assistant district attorney.

She was an ex-con. A sanitation worker. She swung her bare feet to the cold floor and walked to the small sink in the corner. She splashed icy water on her face, trying to wash away the nightmare.

The face in the cracked mirror was pale, gaunt. She stared at it, then lifted her chin. She stared at her reflection, her lips moving silently. "Just get through this." It was the mantra she'd learned in prison.

The only rule that mattered. Survive. Endure. Hate was the fuel. Laura, Brandon... she would not let them win. But first, she had to get through today.

She pulled the bright orange uniform of a city sanitation worker from the dresser and began to change, her expression a blank mask.

Today, she had to go clean up the city's trash to earn enough for bread.
