Chapter 2

Chapter 1

Lucian walked alongside her, his long strides easily matching her rushed pace. The rain continued to fall, soaking through his cheap canvas jacket, but for the first time in ten years, he felt a strange, profound warmth beginning to take root in his chest.

He looked down at the young woman rushing beside him, shielding a box of cupcakes from the rain with her own body, offering a hot meal to a stranger dressed in rags without asking for a single thing in return.

I am Georgia; Georgia Blackhood...

I'm Luke Simons

Georgia Blackhood, he thought, adjusting his duffel bag as they crossed the wet street together.

The six-month clock just stopped.

The service entrance of the Grand Regency Hotel was a concrete alleyway choked with roaring exhaust fans, stacked wooden pallets, and the sharp stench of garbage compacted under heavy hydraulic pressure.

It was a world completely hidden from the crystal chandeliers and velvet carpets forty feet above-a distinction Lucian knew intimately, having stayed in the Regency's top-floor presidential suite during his brief stopover in London six months ago.

Georgia didn't hesitate as she pushed through the heavy steel double doors, her shoulder bumping the crash bar. She moved with the practiced efficiency of someone who knew every corner of the city's underbelly.

"Hold the door, please, Luke," she said, her voice tight as she balanced the heavy cupcake box against her hip.

Lucian caught the door with a sturdy arm, stepping into the warm, grease-laden air of the hotel's staging corridor. A pastry chef in a spotless, towering chef's hat was shouting orders in rapid French near a wall of stainless-steel prep tables.

A sleek man in a tailored tuxedo-the event coordinator-approached them with a clipboard, his eyes narrowing instantly as his gaze swept over Georgia's flour-dusted apron, before landing with open disdain on Lucian's frayed blue jacket and muddy boots.

"You're seven minutes late, Blackhood," the coordinator snapped, tapping a gold-plated pen against his clipboard. "And who is this? Security doesn't allow vagrants through the service bay."

Lucian felt an old, cold reflex twitch in his jaw. In his normal life, a single phone call from his desk would have had this mid-level manager stripped of his credentials by sunset. He held his tongue, leaning slightly into his slouched, weary posture.

Georgia stepped smoothly between the coordinator and Lucian, her head held high despite her obvious exhaustion.

"The order was scheduled for 5:15 PM. My watch says 5:12 PM, Mr. Vance," Georgia said calmly, her tone devoid of fear or deference. "And this is my assistant for the delivery. The forty custom sugar-crystal floral cupcakes are intact, unblemished, and chilled to exact specification. Would you like to inspect the work, or should I take them back to my kitchen and bill your master account for breach of contract?"

The coordinator's mouth tightened into a hard, thin line. He looked at the pristine, three-tiered box under the clear protective film. The delicate, hand-sculpted icing flowers were flawless-far superior to what his own kitchen had produced on short notice.

"Sign here," he muttered, thrusting the clipboard toward her. "And get your 'assistant' out through the back alley before the event host sees him."

Georgia signed her name with a quick, elegant stroke, accepted her receipt, and turned on her heel without another word.

As the heavy steel doors slammed shut behind them, back out into the cold, drizzling rain, Lucian adjusted his duffel bag and looked at her sideways.

"You handle arrogant middle managers well," he noted dryly.

Georgia let out a long, ragged breath, her shoulders sagging as the adrenaline of the delivery finally wore off. She rubbed her damp forehead with the back of her wrist, leaving a faint streak of white flour across her brow.

"If you let people like that push you around, they'll walk right over you until there's nothing left," she said softly, pulling her worn wool scarf tighter around her neck. "Come on. 8th Street is four blocks down. The rain is picking up."

The Blackhood family home sat above an old, defunct storefront on 8th Street-a neighborhood where streetlights flickered with unstable wiring and the brick facades were stained dark by decades of coal soot and rain.

The ground floor had once been a neighborhood bakery, but the display windows were now covered in heavy brown paper. A faded wooden sign above the door read: Blackhood & Sons Bakery - Est. 1998.

Georgia unlocked a small side door, leading Lucian up a narrow, creaking flight of wooden stairs that smelled faintly of cinnamon, old paper, and sweet vanilla extract.

"Take off your boots by the mat," Georgia whispered, slipping her own scuffed sneakers off at the top landing. "Grandma's sleeping."

Lucian stepped into the apartment, unlacing his heavy work boots. The space was small-unforgivingly so-but impossibly neat. The furniture was old, with faded floral fabric patched carefully at the armrests, but every surface was wiped clean. Hand-knit blankets were folded neatly over the back of the sofa, and framed, slightly blurry photographs lined the narrow hallway.

"Georgia? Is that you, sweetheart?"

A frail, trembling voice called out from the doorway at the end of the hall.

Georgia's entire demeanor shifted in an instant. The sharp, guarded edge she had carried on the street vanished, replaced by an overwhelming warmth.

"It's me, Grandma," Georgia said softly, stepping toward a small, dimly lit bedroom. "I finished the Regency order. We're clear for this week's co-pay."

Lucian lingered in the doorway, watching as an elderly woman with pure white hair and pale, cloudy eyes sat up slowly in a narrow bed. An oxygen concentrator hummed quietly in the corner, its plastic tube looping gently around her ears.

"Did you remember to eat something?" the old woman asked, reaching out with a thin, vein-lined hand to touch Georgia's cheek.

"I'm eating now," Georgia lied smoothly, pressing a warm kiss to her grandmother's forehead. "I brought someone back to help with the heavy flour bags for tomorrow. Go back to sleep, Grandma. I'll bring your tea in twenty minutes."

She gently pulled the door shut until it was only a crack open, then turned back to Lucian, her eyes signaling for him to follow her into the kitchen.

The kitchen was the heart of the home, dominated by a massive, commercial-grade stainless steel preparation table that took up nearly half the room-a remnant of the old family business downstairs. Sitting at the far side of the table were two fourteen-year-old boys who looked almost identical: dark hair, sharp blue eyes, and broad shoulders that were rapidly outgrowing their faded high school varsity hoodies.

They both snapped their heads up as Lucian walked in.

"Who's the giant, Georgie?" one of the twins asked, dropping his pencil onto an open algebra textbook.

"This is Luke," Georgia said, moving briskly toward the stove. "He helped me keep the Regency shipment steady when I tripped on 4th Street. Luke, these are my brothers, Rayden and Hayden."

Ray-the one with a small scar across his left eyebrow-crossed his arms, eyeing Lucian's threadbare jacket and faded duffel bag with immediate, protective suspicion. "He doesn't look like a delivery driver."

"He's down on his luck," Georgia said firmly, lighting the gas burner beneath a dented aluminum pot. "And he's our guest tonight. Ray, clear your books off the table. Hayden, grab another bowl from the cabinet."

Lucian stood in the middle of the small kitchen, feeling oddly out of place. He was used to dining room tables that stretched thirty feet long, lit by crystal chandeliers, served by white-gloved waiters who moved like shadows. Here, the room was cramped, steam from the pot was fogging the small window overlooking the fire escape, and two teenager boys were watching him like hawks while their sister moved with practiced grace between the stove and the sink.

Georgia set a heavy ceramic bowl on the metal table, followed by a thick slab of dense, golden sourdough bread and a small saucer of coarse salt.

"It's potato and leek soup," she said, pulling out a wooden chair for him. "It's simple, but it's hot. Eat."

Lucian sat down slowly. He picked up the silver spoon-it was light, stamped stainless steel, worn smooth at the edges. He took a spoonful of the soup.

It wasn't Michelin-starred cuisine. There were no truffle oils, no exotic micro-greens, no wine reductions. But as the heat settled in his chest, Lucian felt something unspool inside him-a knot of tension he hadn't even realized he was holding since stepping off the plane from London.

It tasted of real butter, fresh herbs, roasted garlic, and absolute, honest care.

"It's good," Lucian said, his baritone voice quiet in the small room. "Thank you, Georgia."

Georgia sat across from him, leaning her elbows on the table and watching him with a quiet, observant intensity. She took a small piece of bread for herself, dipping it into a small mug of hot water and lemon.

"Where are you staying tonight, Luke?" she asked plainly.

Lucian paused, the spoon halfway to his mouth. "I have a room booked near the depot."

"The depot shelter closed its overflow floor two weeks ago," Hayden chimed in from the counter, not looking up from his phone. "City cut the budget."

Georgia didn't take her eyes off Lucian. She saw the subtle, rigid posture of his shoulders-the posture of a man who was clearly educated, clearly strong, yet sitting in her kitchen in rags, refusing to beg.

"My grandfather used to say that a man's worth isn't measured by the clothes on his back, but by how he handles a heavy load," Georgia said softly, her fingers tracing the edge of her wooden mug. "You caught me when I fell today. You didn't ask for money. You didn't demand anything."

She leaned forward, her voice dropping so her brothers wouldn't hear over the hum of the old refrigerator.

"I have a proposition for you, Luke."

Lucian set his spoon down, his gray eyes narrowing slightly as he met her gaze. The game was shifting, faster than he had anticipated.

"I'm listening," Lucian said.

Georgia took a deep breath, her hands clenching into small fists against the metal table.

"I need a handy man," she said directly. "And I think you need a place to stay."
