Chapter 6

"Don't touch me," Clara snapped, yanking her arm away as Kevin tried to stop her. She didn't even look back.

"Clara, wait!" Kevin's voice echoed in the hotel corridor, desperate, but she kept walking, clutching her bag like it was all she had left.

Her heels clicked against the pavement outside as she stormed down the London street. The night air was cold, sharp, but her anger was hotter. "He didn't even deny it, he just stood there," she muttered to herself, blinking away tears.

A sleek black car rolled slowly behind her. At first, she thought it was coincidence, but when she crossed the street, the car eased over too.

Her chest tightened. "No, no, not tonight."

She picked up her pace. The car sped up, her heart pounded as she ducked into a narrow side street. The car followed, tires crunching.

Clara pulled out her phone with shaking hands and tried to call Kevin, but the screen flashed No Service.

"Damn it!"

The car door opened with a heavy slam. Two men in dark suits stepped out, walking fast toward her.

Clara's stomach dropped. "Stay away!" she shouted, but her voice cracked.

One of the men smirked. "Miss, we don't want trouble. Just come with us."

Her pulse roared in her ears. She spun and bolted down the alley, clutching her bag. Their footsteps thundered after her.

She reached a busy street and spotted a glowing sign, king's Cross Station. Without thinking, she sprinted inside, weaving through the crowd.

"Excuse me, sorry!" she cried, shoving past strangers. She glanced back, the men were pushing through too, their eyes locked on her.

Her breath came in ragged gasps. She darted down a stairwell, into the crowd by the underground trains. The noise swallowed her whole.

The men lost sight of her. She crouched low, hiding behind a vending machine, hands trembling.

"Oh my God," she whispered, clutching her chest. "What the hell is happening to me?"

Meanwhile, Kevin stormed into the Raymond estate, fury in his eyes. His father sat at the long dining table, calmly sipping scotch as if nothing had happened.

"You've gone too far," Kevin growled.

His father looked up lazily. "Is this about your little outburst? Or your wife?" He said the word like poison.

Kevin slammed a folder on the table. "It's about the empire, it's about the truth. You think you can control everything, but you're forgetting something."

His father arched a brow. "And what's that?"

Kevin yanked out papers and threw them down. "Grandfather's will, the original. The one you buried, he named me the rightful heir.

For the first time, his father's smile cracked. "Where did you get that?"

Kevin leaned in. "It doesn't matter. What matters is that I know and soon the board will know too. You've been manipulating everyone for years, but your game is over."

"You ungrateful boy," his father hissed, standing. "Everything you have is because of me. Without me, you're nothing."

Kevin shot back, "Without you, I'm finally free."

The room grew tense as voices rose outside, executives, lawyers, family members whispering. News was spreading fast. The Raymond empire was no longer solid. It was cracking, right down the middle.

His father slammed his glass down. "You think you can take me down with a piece of paper? I built this empire with my bare hands. I won't let you destroy it."

Kevin's voice was sharp. "You already destroyed it. You destroyed Clara's family, and now you want to destroy her too but I won't let you."

His father narrowed his eyes. "Clara is weak. She'll leave you soon enough and when she does, you'll crawl back to Evelyn, because she's the only one strong enough to stand beside you."

Kevin's jaw clenched. "You don't know Clara. You don't know me."

Before his father could reply, Kevin's phone buzzed. A message from one of his men:

"Clara is being followed. Two men are after her."

Kevin's blood ran cold. Without another word, he stormed out, leaving his father shouting his name.

Clara's legs ached as she hurried through the underground, finally slipping out a side exit into a parking garage. She thought she'd lost them. She pressed her back against a wall, sucking in shaky breaths.

Her phone lit up finally, service. She started typing a message to her mother when a shadow moved.

The same two men stepped into the garage.

Her heart stopped.

One of them smirked. "You gave us a good chase, but it ends here."

Clara's scream echoed, but before they could reach her, a black car screeched into the garage.

"Clara!" Kevin's voice thundered as he jumped out.

She froze, relief and fear mixing.

Kevin charged forward, shoving one man back with his shoulder. The second swung, but Kevin blocked and punched hard. The man staggered, groaning.

Kevin grabbed Clara's hand. "Come with me, now!"

They ran to the car together. Kevin pushed her inside, slammed the door, and sped out of the garage. Clara's hands shook in her lap, her face pale.

"What the hell was that?" she cried. "Who are they?"

Kevin's knuckles were white on the wheel. "Men my father sent or Evelyn. It doesn't matter, they won't touch you again."

Clara stared at him. "You're dragging me into a war I don't understand, Kevin. And I'm the one paying the price."

"I'll fix it," Kevin said firmly. "I promise."

Back at his penthouse, Clara collapsed onto the sofa, exhausted. Kevin knelt in front of her, cupping her face. "You're safe now."

Her phone buzzed.

Clara picked it up. A new message glowed on the screen:

"You were never the target, he was. But now you'll both burn."

Her hands went cold.

She looked at Kevin, her voice barely a whisper. "Kevin... they don't just want me. They want you."

The phone slipped from her trembling fingers as the words hung heavy in the air.
