Chapter 2

A tear.

One single drop sliding down Serena’s perfectly powdered cheek.

The sight of it yanked me five years backward, straight into the sterile chill of a federal interrogation room.

The investigator tapped a manicured fingernail against the risk waiver on the metal table.

"This is your electronic signature, Miss Sinclair."

I stared at the black ink on the screen. "I didn't sign that."

"The authorization came from a private IP address," the agent replied, sliding a printed log across the desk. "Damian Cross's personal office."

Twelve hours. I sat in that windowless box for twelve hours waiting for the man I was going to marry.

Instead, a corporate lawyer walked in and handed me a stack of photocopies.

I didn't go home. I took a cab straight to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Through the glass of the VIP suite, I found them. Serena buried her face in Damian’s chest, sobbing violently. Damian wrapped both arms around her, his hand smoothing down her spine.

I pushed the door open.

Damian’s head snapped up.

I marched across the linoleum and slammed the crumpled waiver against his chest.

"Was it you?"

He didn't flinch. He didn't drop his arms from Serena.

"Avery, we can discuss this later," he murmured.

"Was it you?" I demanded, my voice echoing off the monitors.

Serena whimpered, shrinking tighter against him.

"Her father is the primary shadow investor in that shell company," Damian finally admitted, his tone flat. "The feds were going to raid the Vale estate by morning."

"So you used my project clearance." I stepped back. "You bypassed my security protocols without asking."

"It deflected the immediate subpoenas," he reasoned.

"Damian, I am your fiancée." My hands shook so hard the remaining papers rustled. "You used my name to keep your first love out of prison?"

"It's temporary," he insisted. "Your legal team can fix it. You have the Sinclair backing. Serena has no one."

A harsh, ugly sound ripped from my throat. I laughed, though my eyes burned.

"Do you know what the absolute funniest part of this is?" I asked him.

Damian frowned.

"Twelve hours ago," I whispered, "I sat across from a federal agent and swore on my life that my fiancé would never frame me."

He reached out. "Avery—"

A sharp, violent cramp tore through my abdomen.

I gasped, doubling over. My fingers grabbed the edge of the hospital bed to stay upright.

"Avery?" Damian stepped away from Serena.

Pain radiated down my thighs, hot and blinding. I looked down.

Bright crimson stained the inseam of my white suit pants. The blood dripped onto the pristine hospital floor.

Drop. Drop.

The room went entirely silent.

Three days ago, a smiling doctor had handed me a sonogram. *Six weeks pregnant.*

I hadn't found the right moment to tell him.

The sharp scent of rubbing alcohol pulled me back to consciousness.

A heart monitor beeped a steady, mocking rhythm.

Damian sat beside the bed. His face was completely drained of color.

The attending physician stood at the foot of the mattress, holding a chart.

"Severe stress and delayed treatment caused a miscarriage," the doctor stated. "I'm very sorry for your loss."

The door clicked shut.

I kept my eyes fixed on the ceiling tiles. Counted the little dots. One, two, three.

Damian reached out and grabbed my hand. His fingers felt like ice.

"Why didn't you tell me?" he rasped, his voice trembling for the first time since I’d known him.

I slowly rolled my head to the side.

"I was going to tell you yesterday," I replied.

He squeezed his eyes shut. A single tear escaped, tracking down his jaw.

"Damian," I called his name softly.

He opened his eyes, desperation pooling in his gaze.

"If you knew I was pregnant," I asked, keeping my tone perfectly even, "would you still have used my name to shield Serena?"

His lips parted. He stared at me.

The silence stretched. Five seconds. Ten.

He didn't say no.

He didn't say anything at all.

A quiet laugh tumbled past my lips. A hot tear slipped from the corner of my eye, soaking into the pillowcase.

"You see," I whispered. "You still can't say you wouldn't."

People didn't change overnight. They just found someone else who mattered more.

During our sophomore year of college, my appendix ruptured. I woke up in a dark recovery room, terrified. Damian had been sitting right there in the chair. He missed the biggest venture capital pitch of his early career just to hold my hand.

*I can always make more money,* he had told me back then, kissing my forehead. *But there's only one you.*

I finally understood. He hadn't changed. That fierce, unwavering devotion just belonged to Serena now.

The memory faded, leaving me standing in the JFK arrivals terminal.

Xavier, Damian, and Serena were still blocking my path.

"You left us a mess to clean up," Xavier snapped, breaking the silence.

I blinked away the ghosts of five years ago. My grip on the suitcase handle turned white-knuckled.

"I left you a scapegoat," I corrected my brother. "Now, I suggest you step aside."

"You're not going anywhere near Dad's hospital room," Xavier warned.

"Watch me."

I shoved my luggage cart forward, forcing them to scatter. But as I walked past Damian, he grabbed my wrist.

"Avery, wait," he urged, his grip tight. "There's something you don't know about the company. Something about your shares."

I paused, glancing down at his fingers wrapped around my arm.

"If you don't release me in three seconds," I promised, "I will ensure Serena's father spends the rest of his life in federal prison."

Damian dropped his hand immediately.

I didn't look back as I walked toward the exit. The automatic doors slid open, letting in the biting New York wind.

My phone vibrated in my coat pocket.

I pulled it out. An unknown number flashed on the screen.

"Avery Sinclair," I answered, keeping my stride brisk.

"Miss Sinclair," a deep, unfamiliar voice rumbled through the speaker. "Your father's condition just changed. You need to get to the hospital. Now."

"Who is this?" I demanded, stopping on the curb.

"Someone who owns the other half of your family's company," the man replied. "And we have a lot to discuss."
