The Heiress Returns: Too Late For Your Regret Novel Cover

The Heiress Returns: Too Late For Your Regret

I died in a high-end psychiatric ward, only to wake up gasping for air in the icy water of a Hamptons infinity pool. Three years ago, I had been the naive girl who desperately craved the love of my wealthy brothers, but today, I was drowning while they prioritized the fake sister who was only pretending to choke. My brother Preston didn't even glance at me as he swam past to save her, and my other brother Brock threw a life ring at her while ignoring my struggle entirely. I clawed my way onto the deck, shivering and vomiting water, only to be met with their cold lectures and accusations that I had pushed her on purpose. They hovered over her with cashmere towels and fake concern, while I stood there, a soaked, disposable pawn in their twisted game of favoritism. I didn't cry, I didn't beg for their validation, and I certainly didn't care about their hollow threats anymore. I walked back into that house, packed every expensive gift they had ever used to buy my affection, and dumped it all in a trunk to return to them in front of the city's elite. They thought I was just throwing a tantrum, but they had no idea that the girl who died in that asylum was gone, and the one who returned was done being their victim.

Chapter 7

Adela sat in the back row of the AP Biology classroom, right next to the window.

Her fever was spiking again, causing her vision to double and blur.

Kalyn walked into the classroom surrounded by a group of girls, soaking up their attention.

Kalyn scanned the room.

Her eyes immediately locked onto Adela, who was pale but sitting with her spine perfectly straight.

A flash of deep jealousy crossed Kalyn's eyes, but she quickly masked it with a look of extreme worry.

Instead of walking to her seat in the front row, Kalyn walked straight toward Adela's desk.

Every student in the room instantly turned their heads to watch them.

Kalyn spoke in a soft, gentle voice, making sure everyone could hear her.

"Sister, are you still mad at me?" Kalyn asked.

Adela kept her eyes glued to the cell division diagram on the whiteboard, treating Kalyn like thin air.

Kalyn bit her lower lip and pushed further.

"The brothers were just really worried about me last night. Please don't blame them for yelling at you."

The words sounded like an apology, but they were a deliberate flex.

The students around them immediately started glaring at Adela with disgust.

Adela finally turned her head.

She looked Kalyn in the eye and spat out two words.

"Get lost."

Kalyn gasped, pretending to be terrified by Adela's tone.

She jerked her body backward dramatically.

Her waist hit the edge of the adjacent desk with perfect precision.

She knocked over a plastic box filled with glass microscope slides.

The box hit the floor, and the glass shattered with a sharp crash.

Kalyn let out a loud scream and fell to the floor, landing right in the middle of the broken glass.

She quickly dragged the back of her hand across a sharp piece of glass.

A thin line of bright red blood welled up on her skin.

Kalyn grabbed her arm and started sobbing loudly.

The classroom exploded into chaos.

Tiffany was the first to rush forward, pointing a shaking finger at Adela.

"Everyone saw that! She pushed Kalyn into the glass!" Tiffany screamed.

The angry students immediately swarmed Adela's desk, trapping her in the corner.

The biology teacher ran in from the hallway.

When he saw the blood on Kalyn's arm, his face turned white.

He pointed strictly at Adela.

"You need to come with me to the principal's office right now!" the teacher demanded.

Adela placed both hands flat on her desk, trying to push herself up to defend herself.

But the prolonged high fever and the intense mental focus she had used earlier had completely drained her body.

The room started spinning violently. A cold sweat drenched her back, and her lungs simply refused to draw in any more oxygen.

The loud, angry voices of the students morphed into a high-pitched ringing in her ears.

Through the gaps in the crowd, she saw Kalyn looking up at her.

Kalyn was smiling-a toxic, victorious smirk.

Adela's legs completely lost all muscle control.

Her body pitched forward.

She crashed heavily onto the cold linoleum floor and instantly lost consciousness.

The classroom went dead silent for one second before erupting into panicked screams.

The teacher frantically ordered two boys to pick Adela up and carry her to the clinic.

I spent three years playing the role of a submissive, small-town wife for Evertt Baker, trading my true identity for a quiet life in a Manhattan penthouse. I thought my devotion would be enough to build a real home, but I was just a placeholder in his grand design. The illusion shattered at 2 AM when Evertt walked in smelling of Chanel No. 5-the signature scent of his mistress, Adda. Without a word of apology, he dropped divorce papers on the table, demanding I sign them immediately so he could finally be with the woman he truly loved. He looked at me with pure disgust, flicking a five-million-dollar check toward me as if he were paying off an incompetent employee. He told me it was more money than anyone from my "trailer park" background would ever see and ordered me to hurry because Adda was waiting in the car downstairs. He didn't care that I had spent years nursing him through illness and tolerating his family's insults; he only cared about his own convenience. The sheer arrogance of his payout and the blatant disrespect of bringing his mistress to our home was the final blow. I realized that the man I loved never actually saw me, only the submissive shadow I had forced myself to become. I signed the papers with a fluid scrawl he didn't bother to check, then I fed his millions into the office shredder. I pulled a hidden, encrypted device from a kitchen drawer and dialed a number I hadn't called in three years. "Brother," I said, my voice finally steady. "Come get me. The game is over." Evertt thought he was discarding a penniless nobody, but he was about to find out that he had just declared war on the Stafford empire.
