Chapter 1

"Are you sure you want to file this legal claim to protect your ownership rights in BeanStalk Tech? Once submitted, it will trigger a formal dispute process that could become extremely complicated."

The clerk's bored voice echoed in the cavernous hallway of the New York City Hall.

Serena Jackson's fingers tightened around the document. The cheap paper felt damp in her cold hand.

"I'm sure."

Her voice was calm. A fortress of calm built over years of chaos.

Today was the last day. Tomorrow, BeanStalk Tech, the company she had poured her heart and soul into, would enter the final stage before going public. Once that happened, any ownership dispute between the founders could trigger a serious review and put everything she had built at risk.

This was her only chance to legally protect what belonged to her.

The clerk, a woman with tired eyes, pushed the document back across the counter.

"Sign here."

Just as Serena picked up the pen, a sharp voice cut through the air.

"Serena! After everything we've shared, how can you be so cold and treat me like a stranger? Do you really have to separate every right, every share, and everything we once built together?"

Serena's spine went rigid. She didn't need to turn around. That voice was etched into her memory, a constant hum of disappointment and entitlement.

Estill Bean, Serena's former fiancé, stormed toward her, his handsome face twisted with frustration. On his arm was Jessenia Holmes, Serena's half-sister, her face a perfect mask of gentle concern.

He slammed his hand down on the document, covering the signature line. "Do you have to make this so ugly? For money, you'll throw away the last bit of decency we have?"

His voice was a low growl, meant for her, but loud enough for the people in line to turn and stare. Whispers started, little pinpricks against her skin.

Jessenia, ever the peacemaker, added fuel to the fire. Her voice was sweet, dripping with false sympathy. "Sister, please don't be like this. Estill still cares about you. Whatever you want, you can just talk to him. Why come to a place like this?"

Estill's anger swelled, fed by Jessenia's performance. He pointed a finger at Serena. "See? Look how understanding Jessenia is! And you? What do you do besides pull these stunts to force my hand?"

Serena looked at the two people standing before her. The man who had taken her code, her ideas, and countless nights of hard work, then built his success and public image on everything she had created. The sister who had copied her designs, her style, and even her life, all while pretending to be the innocent victim.

The last flicker of warmth in Serena's heart disappeared.

She ignored Estill's rage. Her gaze, cold and gray like a winter sea, settled on Jessenia.

Jessenia flinched, an involuntary tremor. She unconsciously loosened her grip on Estill's arm.

Serena looked back at Estill. "I'm here to take back what is mine. It has nothing to do with you."

She shoved his hand off the paper with a sharp, decisive motion, picked up the pen, and signed her name with a steady hand.

Serena Jackson.

The ink was black and final. Not a single tremor.

Estill stared at her, his expression a mixture of shock and disbelief.

He was used to her quiet support, her work behind the scenes. He had never seen this woman before, this stranger who looked him in the eye without flinching.

At the far end of the hall, a tall man leaned against the wall, silently watching as his deep, unreadable blue-gray eyes took in the entire scene.

Camilo Meyer.

His gaze fell to the small, tight fist Serena made after signing the document. Her knuckles were white. A barely perceptible smile touched the corner of his mouth.

Estill, red-faced with humiliation, grabbed Jessenia's arm.

"You'll regret this, Serena! You're nothing without me!" he snarled, before dragging his new prize away.

Serena didn't watch them go.

She pushed the signed document back to the clerk, completing the final step, then turned to leave. The armor of her composure finally cracked as exhaustion washed over her. She leaned against the cold marble wall, taking a deep, shaky breath.

A shadow fell over her.

Camilo stood before her, blocking the harsh fluorescent light.

"Miss Serena Jackson?" His voice was a low, steady baritone.

She looked up, wary.

The man was impeccably dressed in a tailored suit that probably cost more than her car. He radiated a quiet, dangerous power.

He held out a business card.

It was minimalist, made of thick, expensive stock. A single line of text was embossed on it: "Camilo Meyer, Senior Risk Advisor."

Serena didn't take it. She just watched him.

He wasn't bothered. He simply continued, his voice even. "Your actions just now were brave. But not effective enough."

Serena's expression remained cold. "What do you mean?"

Camilo glanced at the signed document in her hand. "Your ex-fiancé came here for a reason, but it wasn't to repair your relationship."

Serena's eyes narrowed slightly. "Then what is he trying to do?"

"Protect his control over BeanStalk Tech."The corner of Camilo's lips lifted slightly, a subtle hint of amusement flashing across his face.

A faint change appeared in Serena's expression. "How do you know that?"

"Because I specialize in corporate risk assessment." Camilo's gaze remained steady. "And I know what happens when a company is about to enter the IPO process."

He paused.

"Tomorrow, BeanStalk Tech enters its IPO quiet period. Once investors and the board become aware of a dispute between the founders, Estill can use it to challenge your ownership rights."

Serena's fingers tightened slightly.

"He doesn't want you back," Camilo continued. "He wants what you built."

The words landed harder than she expected.

For years, she had known Estill wanted her talent, her ideas, and her support.

But hearing someone else say it made the truth impossible to ignore.

Camilo looked directly at her. "You need an absolute legal barrier. Something that creates a separate interest and makes any ownership dispute extremely complicated."

A flicker of sharp intelligence lit up Serena's gray eyes. "What are you trying to say?"

Camilo met her gaze directly. He spoke each word with deliberate clarity.

"My family wants to turn my marriage into a business transaction. I need a way to take back control of my own choice." Camilo glanced at the signed document in her hand. "And you need someone who can make Estill think twice before touching your company."

He paused, his gaze steady. "Neither of us is looking for love. We need protection. We need leverage."

His eyes met hers.

"Marriage is the simplest solution."

Serena stared at him, certain she had misheard.

She scanned his face for any hint of a joke, but found only calm, serious intent.

Her mind raced, not with emotion, but with calculation. She weighed the risks, the consequences, and the potential gains. A powerful stranger with unknown intentions. A contract filled with unpredictable variables. A decision that could change everything.

But standing alone meant facing Estill with no leverage, no protection, and no time.

Camilo was an unknown variable. But losing BeanStalk Tech was a loss she could never recover from.

"Why me?" she asked, her voice raspy.

"Because you're smart enough, calm enough, and," he paused, "like me, you view contracts as everything. We are the same kind of people."

Serena's eyes dropped to the watch on his wrist.

A Patek Philippe. Understated, but its value was astronomical.

This was a man whose power she couldn't fight. But perhaps... She could use it.

She took a deep breath. The decision was made. "I agree. But only as a contract."

A flicker of appreciation appeared in his eyes. "Of course."

He gestured with his chin toward the marriage license bureau. "Then let's go."

Without a moment's hesitation, Serena turned and walked beside him, toward the very entrance that had represented her humiliation just moments before. Now, it might become the beginning of her new life.
