The Family Secret
Chapter 2
“No way! Your mother-in-law slept in the same bed as you guys last night?”
“Keep it down.” Startled by my best friend’s loud voice, I shushed her. Still, I nodded helplessly.
My best friend, Susie freaked out, but I just shrugged it off.
“What? This isn’t right! She can’t be sleeping with her son at her age.”
“It’s okay. My husband is good to me.”
“Trust me on this, Naomi. What if your mother-in-law is a total pervert?”
“Whatever.” Despite my words, the image of Keith and Whitney cuddling in bed last night replayed in my mind.
Back home, Whitney had prepared lunch. As she invited me to join her at the dinner table, I felt a pang of guilt.
Keith was still out, and Whitney had been busy in the kitchen, cooking all my favorite dishes, yet here I was, suspecting her intentions.
“You didn’t have to, Whitney.”
“Oh, Naomi. It’s fine. Keith loves my cooking. You need to work, and I don’t have much to do around the house anyway.”
Keith returned home while Whitney and I were enjoying lunch.
Without excusing herself at the dinner table, Whitney rushed to welcome him back. As usual, he handed his coat to her as if they were an old married couple.
I shook my head to shake off the unsettling feeling.
Keith shuffled my hair and took a seat next to me. Whitney stayed silent.
Still, my gut feeling was screaming at me. I decided to order a hidden camera online that afternoon to put my mind at ease.
After lunch, Keith and Whitney insisted on cleaning up. Keith sent me to bed as I had work in the afternoon. How thoughtful of him. Pushing Whitney’s strange behavior out of my mind, I drifted off to slumberland.
The buzz of my phone startled me awake. I got up to use the bathroom, only to find the living room unoccupied.
Before I could call out to anyone, the strange noise from Whitney’s room caught my attention. I approached the room and stuck my ear against the door. The closed door did little to block out the sound.
I heard muffled, broken sounds coming from the room.
“Mmph… Hm… Harder…”
I shook uncontrollably as the sounds of intimacy pierced through my ears. Given that Whitney was a widow, and Keith was missing, I shoved my fist into my mouth and went back to my room.
Staring at my phone on the bed, I snapped back to reality. I texted Keith. “Are you at work? I didn’t see you when I woke up.”
I anxiously waited for a response from Keith. I knew better than to get ahead of myself. For all I knew, it could just be a misunderstanding.
“I’m at work. I told Mom to wake you up. What’s the matter?” Keith’s reply calmed my nerves.
Relief washed over me.
“What? Miss me already?” Keith’s text message caught me between emotions.
I responded to his message like everything was fine and dandy while looking forward to our wedding night do-over tonight. “You’ve got to make it up to me tonight.”
“Don’t worry, babe. I’m more than ready for you. See you tonight.”
“See you tonight.”
My mind jolted back to the sounds coming from Whitney’s room. I should just respect her privacy. While I shouldn’t have pried, she shouldn’t have brought a stranger to the house. To think that Keith told her to wake me up too.
Although things didn’t add up, I decided to slip away to avoid an embarrassing confrontation.
While I was passing Whitney’s room, the sounds grew intense. I felt a blush creep up my cheeks. Even as a woman, I found Whitney’s moans rather arousing.
“Mmm… Love you… Harder… Ah…”
The flush across my cheeks finally simmered when I stepped outside.
I had completely forgotten about getting a surveillance camera installed until the technician called me in the afternoon.
