Chapter 2

"Chloe, open the office safe."

"Elowen?" My assistant’s voice cracked with sleep over the phone line. "It's seven in the morning. Aren't you in Paris?"

"I came back early. Just open the safe." I kept my phone pinned to my ear while my right hand navigated the digital trust portal on my laptop.

"Okay, I'm opening it," Chloe said. Metal clanked in the background. "What am I looking for?"

"The physical copy of my post-nuptial asset agreement. Pull it out and turn to Appendix B."

Paper rustled. "Got it. I'm on the page."

"Read me the ownership terms for the New York flagship store, the workshop, and the lakefront villa."

Chloe paused. "It says... 'Subject to joint marital division upon liquidation, expansion, or sale.' Wait, Elowen, I thought those properties were solely under your LLC?"

"They were." I stared at the scanned PDF on my screen, tracing the digital signature at the bottom. "He swapped the appendix."

"When?"

"Last year. Remember when he brought me that massive stack of tax renewals to sign while I was prepping the spring line?"

"You were running on zero sleep," Chloe recalled, her tone sharpening. "He said he had already reviewed everything with legal."

"He lied. He slipped a modified appendix into the pile." I struck the laptop key, closing the PDF. "He's claiming half my real estate and the workshop. He's using the joint status to cover his tracks. If the workshop is shared property, his unauthorized knock-off dresses and embezzled funds look like internal company decisions, not outright theft."

"That's fraud, Elowen. What do we do?"

"Bring that physical binder to the Four Seasons. Room 412. Don't tell anyone where you're going."

"On my way."

I ended the call and immediately dialed another number.

"Gable Notary Services," a gruff voice answered.

"Mr. Gable. It's Elowen. I need an emergency verification."

"I have appointments until noon, ma'am."

"I'll pay triple your hourly rate. I need you at the Four Seasons in twenty minutes." I pulled my secondary tablet from my bag and booted it up. "I have a tampered legal document. The staple holes won't align, and the paper weight of page four will be different from the rest of the contract. I need the tampering analyzed and certified in person."

"Triple rate?" Gable cleared his throat. "I'll bring my kit. Room number?"

"Four twelve."

I tossed the phone onto the mattress.

My fingers moved back to the laptop keyboard. I typed in the admin credentials for the workshop's security backend. A spinning wheel appeared on the screen, followed by a grid of twelve camera feeds.

I clicked on the sample room archive.

A progress bar flashed.

Kai hadn't deleted the footage.

"Arrogant," I muttered, watching the timestamp from last night load perfectly.

I dialed my attorney.

"Sterling," he answered, the background noise of a busy street bleeding through the speaker.

"Did you file the freeze?" I asked.

"The paperwork is in front of the judge now. Give it an hour. Did you find something else?"

"He altered our post-nup. Swapped an appendix page to claim the villa and the flagship store."

"Do you have the original?"

"No, but I have a notary coming to certify the physical tampering on the forgery. More importantly, I'm looking at the workshop security cameras right now."

"Tell me he didn't wipe the drives."

"He didn't even try. The footage from last night is still sitting on the cloud."

"Download it," Sterling instructed. "Save it to multiple local drives. Right now."

"Already doing it." I watched the progress bar hit fifty percent. "I have the entire hour. Serena trying on the Pearl Queen dress. The cash on the table. Every single frame."

"That destroys any claim he has to good-faith business practices," Sterling said. "He can't argue the funds were for company expansion when we have him on video handing company cash to his mistress."

My phone vibrated violently against the desk.

Kai’s name lit up the screen.

"He's calling me," I told Sterling.

"Let it ring."

I watched the incoming call screen time out. A second later, a barrage of text messages flooded my notifications.

"He's texting now," I said, opening the chat window.

"Read them to me."

"First message: *Morning, beautiful. So sorry I missed your calls yesterday.*" I scoffed, taking a screenshot. "Second message: *I was up super late at the workshop checking the new silk shipments. Just me and the fabric rolls all night. Totally exhausted.*"

Sterling let out a dry laugh. "Keep letting him dig his own grave."

"Third message," I continued, swiping down. "*Did you land in Paris okay? It was so quiet here without you. No visitors, just me working solo. Call me when you wake up. Miss you.*"

"Do not reply, Elowen."

"I won't." I took three more screenshots, capturing the timestamps, and dumped them into the secure folder I had just created for Sterling. "I'm archiving every single lie. Every fake timestamp. He's handing us his perjury on a silver platter."

"I'll draft the separation notice," Sterling said, his voice dropping into a lethal, professional register. "We drop the hammer today."

"Drop it hard."

I hung up just as the video download completed. A green checkmark appeared on my screen. The evidence was secured.

Three sharp knocks hit my hotel door.

I crossed the room and checked the peephole. Chloe stood in the hallway, clutching a thick leather binder to her chest. Mr. Gable stood right behind her, holding a silver metal briefcase.

I pulled the door open.

"Come in. Put the binder on the desk," I ordered.

Chloe rushed inside, dropping the heavy book onto the glass surface. Gable followed, setting his briefcase down and popping the latches.

"Show me the document," Gable said, pulling out a magnifying loupe and a small UV light.

I flipped the binder open to Appendix B. "Page four. Look at the top left corner."

Gable leaned over the desk, adjusting his glasses. He ran his thumb over the metal staples.

"You're right," Gable murmured, switching on his UV light. "The binding has been compromised. There are secondary puncture marks beneath the current staples. Someone removed the original page and re-stapled this one."

"Can you certify that in writing?" I asked.

"I can." Gable pulled a fresh affidavit from his case. "The paper grain also runs horizontally on page four, while the rest of the contract features a vertical grain. It's a blatant substitution."

"Write it up," I said.

Chloe stood by the window, her arms crossed tightly. "He's going to freak out when he realizes you know, Elowen."

"He won't realize anything until his cards decline," I replied, watching Gable fill out the certification.

Suddenly, my phone rang again.

It wasn't Kai.

The caller ID displayed *First National Bank - Fraud Division*.

I answered, putting the phone on speaker. "This is Elowen."

"Ms. Elowen," a frantic banking representative said. "We are calling to verify a wire transfer initiated five minutes ago from your primary corporate account."

My eyes locked with Chloe's. "How much?"

"Two point five million dollars. The destination is a private escrow account under the name Serena Vance."

The room went dead silent.

"Hold the transfer," I said, my voice turning to ice.

"We tried, ma'am," the representative stammered. "But your husband used the executive override code. The funds have already left the account."
