Chapter 2

Serena POV

The corporate headquarters of the Family's legitimate fronts smelled of expensive espresso and bleached floors.

I moved past the glass partitions, my boots heavy against the polished tiles, heading straight for the administration office to reinstate my Associate status.

Administrator Greco sat behind her massive mahogany desk.

When she saw me, the color drained from her face. She looked profoundly uncomfortable, shifting her weight and keeping her eyes fixed on a single, meaningless paperclip on her blotter.

"Welcome back, Serena," she mumbled, shuffling a stack of manila folders.

"I need my security clearance reactivated." I placed my hands flat on the dark, polished wood of her desk. "And I need the operational files for the three laundering networks I built before I left."

Greco swallowed hard. With a slow, deliberate movement, she pulled a thin gray folder from her drawer and slid it across the desk.

"I can't do that, Serena. Your high-ranking position—and all of your territories—have been permanently handed over to Lilith Vane. She's the director now."

A profound stillness took hold of my limbs. I opened the folder.

The Syndicate file listed my brutal, forced desert exile as a "voluntary transfer." Below that was a five-year-old operational transfer agreement, authorizing shared credit and the ultimate handover of my entire network of laundering operations to Lilith.

At the bottom of the page sat my signature. It was a flawless forgery.

"I didn't sign this." I tapped the paper, my voice low enough that she had to lean forward to hear it.

Greco lowered her voice to a frantic whisper. "You were rushed out of the city so fast. Silvio used his Capo authority to process and manipulate all your classified documents. He signed off on it, and we couldn't question him. I'm sorry, Serena. The best I can offer you is a low-level Associate role in the data entry pool."

I stared at the forged ink. My pride screamed at me to walk out, but I needed a foothold in the Syndicate. I needed access to their system.

"I'll take it."

My new workspace was a cramped, wobbly desk shoved into a dark corner of the floor, right next to a grinding, rhythmic industrial printer.

The other Associates walked past me like I was a ghost. They averted their eyes and whispered behind their hands.

Only Associate Moretti stopped by my desk, dropping a stack of blank paper next to my keyboard.

"Tread carefully, Serena," Moretti warned quietly, glancing over his shoulder. "Lilith is our superior now. She's the Capo's wife. She has eyes everywhere—including in this office. One wrong move, and Silvio will have you buried under the foundation."

I nodded once, my jaw tight. "Thanks for the paper."

My burner phone buzzed against the cheap laminate of the desk. The screen flashed with an unknown number. I ignored it.

It buzzed again. And again.

On the fourth attempt, I took it up and pressed it to my ear without speaking.

"Serena." Silvio's voice was strained, the pitch a half-octave too high. "Why are you at the headquarters?"

"I work here."

"You need to leave." His tone shifted from panic to a harsh command. "I order you to stay out of our sight. Lilith is pregnant with my second heir. The stress of seeing you is dangerous for her condition."

Through the receiver, I heard the sound of a child laughing in the background. Then, Lilith's voice drifted over the line, high-pitched and whiny, claiming she felt faint and needed to lie down.

Silvio cursed under his breath. "Please, Serena. Just comply. Go home. I'll send you money. Don't do this."

He hung up hastily, leaving me with the low hum of a dead line.

I sat in the dark corner of the office, staring at the blank monitor. The lingering scent of Lilith's floral perfume from five years ago suddenly flooded my memory.

It was the same perfume I had smelled on Silvio's tailored suit the day the exile order came down. He had held my face, promising to bring me back soon, all while reeking of another woman.

I picked up my phone and stared at the blank screen. The seed of a plan was taking root, and the first person I needed to find was someone who owed me their life.
