Chapter 5

"I was checking if the lens was still firing," I said, my voice echoing off the concrete walls. I stared at the diamond ring digging sharply into my palm. "Not him."

Julian reached out and hit a switch on his camera. The glowing monitor went black, erasing the image of my wide, guilty eyes.

Andrew stepped closer and took my left hand. He slid the engagement ring back into its proper place. His grip remained gentle, but the cold metal scraped over my swollen knuckle, leaving a harsh red line against my pale skin.

Julian picked up the folded contact sheet from the metal cart and tossed it onto my lap. The paper landed against my bare legs.

"Keep it," Julian said. "I developed thirty-six frames that night in the darkroom. You only took one set when you packed your bags. The master negatives are still sitting in my filing cabinet."

The ghost of our past was literally sitting in his archives, waiting to be pulled out.

"A muse isn't ownership," Julian added. "It is a person who teaches you how to see."

Cassandra stepped forward, her heels tapping loudly against the floor. She slid her arm through Julian's, her diamond tennis bracelet flashing under the harsh strobe lights.

"And I am so glad you finally learned, Jules," Cassandra said, beaming up at him. "That refined vision is why we won the trophy in Paris."

I pulled the collar of the white shirt tight against my throat, hiding the skin Andrew had just marked. "We need a written consent checklist for the remaining four sessions. No replicating old poses without my explicit signature."

Andrew pulled a gold fountain pen from his breast pocket. He grabbed a blank sheet of studio letterhead, scribbled his name at the bottom, and handed the paper to Julian.

Julian took the gold pen and slashed his signature across the page without reading a single word.

"Why does a woman who already chose her new groom panic over repeating a simple kiss?"

Cassandra didn't wait for my answer. She walked over to her designer tote bag and pulled out a thick black binder. The word MUSE was embossed in silver block letters on the spine. She dropped the book onto the metal table between us.

"Look through it," Cassandra demanded.

I stepped forward and flipped the thick cover open. Glossy pages of award-winning shots filled the plastic sleeves. Red carpet events. Gala dinners. Magazine covers. Six years of a life I wasn't part of.

The ink was faded, the paper yellowing at the edges. But the scribbled lighting notes surrounding my image—the angles, the shadow ratios, the aperture settings—matched the exact setups used for the rest of the entire binder. I was the starting point for everything he built. I was replaced, yet undeniably the foundation.

"Do you love her, Julian?"

The studio went dead silent.

Julian stared at me. "That isn't a question another man's fiancée should ask."

"He chose me publicly," Cassandra snapped, stepping in front of Julian to block my view. She pulled a glossy travel itinerary from her bag and slapped it onto the table right next to the binder. "Our eleven-month anniversary trip to Greece. He booked the flights himself."

Andrew stood quietly near the lighting stands. He watched Julian carefully.

I reached out and snapped the black binder shut.

"A public title doesn't mean you are fully chosen, Cassandra," I said.

"That applies to all of us."

I grabbed the signed consent paper off the cart and folded it into my pocket. "Today's shoot is over."

Andrew didn't block my path to the exit. He simply checked his silver wristwatch.

"The October eighteenth wedding date is canceled," Andrew announced.

"I moved it to November eighth," Andrew said, following me into the private dressing room. "The Harborlight greenhouse has emergency construction."

I pulled my phone from my purse and dialed the venue manager. "Hi, this is Sophie Mercer. Do you have construction scheduled for October?"

"No, Ms. Mercer," the cheerful voice chirped through the speaker. "The glasshouse is clear for your original weekend. We are so excited to host you."

I ended the call and tossed the phone onto the vanity table. "Why did you lie?"

Andrew leaned against the wooden doorframe, crossing his arms. "I need more time to see if you actually look at the groom when you walk down the aisle."

"A wedding date isn't a polygraph test, Andrew."

"The contract dictates that Julian stays on as a mutual cost for every reschedule," Andrew replied, his voice even. "If you terminate the shoots now, I will pay the one hundred and eighty thousand dollar penalty. But I will tell both our families that the bride canceled her wedding over her old flame."

He stepped closer, his shadow falling over the lighted vanity mirror. "If you continue the sessions, I will never ask about your past again."

"I am not making that choice now." I grabbed my wool coat off the chair.

My phone rang against the glass tabletop. The caller ID flashed my boss at Beacon & Quill.

I answered it. "Sarah?"

"Sophie," Sarah said, her voice rushing out in a breathless hurry. "We just got the exclusive pitch for J. Vale's photography memoir. You are the lead editor. The client specifically requested you handle the manuscript."

"I didn't bid on that project."

"Andrew Whitmore recommended you to the publisher this morning. It is a deal, Sophie."

I hung up the phone. He was pushing my career and my marriage into the same corner, using his wealth to box me in. Every escape route led straight back to Julian.

Later that evening, I reopened Sarah's email from my desk at home. The attached project brief listed Andrew as the referring contact. Julian's agency had approved the memoir in principle, but nowhere did it say he had requested me as editor.

I carried the laptop into Andrew's study and turned the screen toward him. "You engineered this too."

Andrew glanced at the document. "I recommended the best editor for the best photographer. Professionally, the pairing is obvious."

"Nothing about this is professional. You hired my ex, moved our wedding, and tied my next promotion to his life story."

"I am giving you every opportunity to prove he is only history." Andrew opened the top drawer of his desk and removed a slim silver voice recorder. He set it beside his gold pen. "Tomorrow morning, the three of us will mediate the contract at the South End café."

My stomach tightened. "What is on that?"

He pressed play.

Static whispered from the tiny speaker. Then my own sleeping voice filled the study, soft and broken.

"Julian, don't go."

"You said that on our first night in this house."

My phone vibrated. A message from Julian appeared.

Whitmore says he has proof you still belong to the past. I never agreed to hear it.

Andrew slid the recorder into his pocket. "Nine o'clock. You can explain it to both of us."

The calendar invitation arrived before I could answer. Attached to it was one line from Andrew: No cameras. No edits. The full recording plays once.
