Chapter 2

Julian's grip on Andrew's arm didn't loosen. His knuckles strained white under the harsh studio lights, his jaw set like stone.

"Release my arm," Andrew demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous register.

Julian ignored him. "Can you move your leg, Sophie?"

"It is fine," I managed to say, my throat raw from the harsh chemicals of the pool. "I can move it."

Only then did Julian drop his hand.

Andrew adjusted his ruined suit jacket around my shivering shoulders and hoisted me higher against his chest. He turned toward the exit. "Delete every frame of her in that water," he ordered over his shoulder.

Julian bent down and retrieved his soaked camera from the puddle on the tiles. He popped the side compartment, pulled out the thin black memory card, and snapped it cleanly in half. The plastic shards dropped onto the wet marble floor.

"Done," Julian said, his tone flat.

But as Andrew carried me out the metal doors, my mind snagged on the dual-slot design of that specific camera model. Julian always kept an internal backup. The evidence of my panic was still in his hands.

Forty minutes later, the oak door of our Beacon Hill bedroom clicked shut.

Andrew had already called the family doctor, locked the ruined twenty-pound dress in the guest room, and refused to answer my single question.

"Why did you hire him, Andrew?" I had asked in the foyer, water still dripping from my hair onto the hardwood.

"You need rest," he had replied, sliding my phone out of my cold fingers. "He might harass you. I will keep this downstairs."

Now, staring at the brass lock on the bedroom door, I heard the deadbolt slide into place from the outside. Care had never sounded like a cage before.

Eighteen months ago, on our first night in this house, Andrew had found the gray archival box hidden under my winter coats. Inside sat thirty-six contact sheets of private photos. He had simply closed the lid and said everyone had a past. Today, that patience felt like a weapon he had been saving for the exact right second.

My throat burned. I needed water. I bypassed the locked main door, slipping through the connecting master bath into the hallway.

Light spilled from the half-open study downstairs.

"J. Vale charges by the second," Noah, Andrew's assistant, was saying. "He works exclusively overseas. That is why she never connected the international award-winner to Julian."

I froze on the carpeted stairs, my hand gripping the wooden banister.

"He does interviews?" Andrew asked.

"Rarely. When he does, he thanks the ex-girlfriend who abandoned him for giving him the drive to succeed. And he credits his current girlfriend, Cassandra. They have been together six years."

Six years. The timeline slammed into my chest, knocking the air out of my lungs. He had moved on twelve months after the crash.

"Could Sophie have seen those articles?" Andrew asked.

"She edits literary fiction, Mr. Whitmore. She doesn't follow wedding photography, and he never uses his real name."

My hand trembled. The glass I was holding tapped against the wooden banister.

The study went quiet. I waited for Andrew's footsteps, my muscles coiled tight.

They never came.

Noah's voice resumed, slightly lower this time. "Julian demands to quit immediately. He walked out of the studio the second you left."

A match struck. The thick scent of a cigar drifted into the hall. "Keep him," Andrew ordered.

"Using what leverage, sir? He offered to wire the breach fee today."

"Doesn't his mother like Hermès?" Andrew asked, his tone even. "Send a bag. Make sure it costs less than the penalty."

My stomach twisted. Elaine. He was willing to use the woman who had bled on my driveway to force Julian to stay.

I walked down the remaining stairs and pushed the study door wide open.

Andrew sat behind his mahogany desk. He calmly shut his laptop. Noah took one look at my face, gathered his folders, and slipped out the side door without a word.

"Why did you investigate J. Vale?" I asked, stepping onto the Persian rug. "How do you know what Elaine likes?"

Andrew leaned back in his leather chair, tapping his cigar over the glass ashtray. "Is a one-time meeting seven years ago worth nearly drowning yourself over, Sophie?"

He knew. He had always known.

Andrew opened his desk drawer and pulled out a glossy photograph. He tossed it onto the polished wood. It was a picture of my gray archival box, taken the night we moved in.

"You called out his name," Andrew said.

"I choked on pool water."

"Not today," Andrew corrected, his voice hardening. "Three months ago. In our bed. You tightened your grip on my shoulders and said Ju, then quickly changed it to Andrew."

I stared at him, the blood draining from my face. I had thought he was asleep. I had thought the darkness hid my mistake.

"I have a right to know if I am just a safe replacement," he continued. He tapped the glossy photo. Right there, clearly visible in the captured image, was the thirty-sixth contact sheet. Julian kissing my forehead in a cramped studio apartment.

Andrew stood up, retrieved my phone from his pocket, and set it next to the photo.

"If you admit you still love him, I will cancel the wedding right now," Andrew said. "If you deny it, the shoot continues. We prove this old romance is just noise."

My chest ached. The safety I had craved for seven years stood before me, daring me to tear it down.

"I chose you," I said, my voice shaking.

"But you can't say you don't love him," Andrew replied.

Noah returned a minute later. He carried a signature orange Hermès box and set it on the desk between us. The attached receipt clearly displayed Elaine Vale's name and residential address.

Andrew slid the box back toward Noah. "Have it couriered. It is just commercial retention."

"How did you get her address?" I demanded, pressing my hands flat on the desk.

Andrew ignored my question. He lifted the orange box, revealing a thick stack of stapled papers underneath. A supplementary contract.

I pulled the document toward me. Julian's typed resignation request had a thick black line drawn through it. The new terms dictated four mandatory pre-wedding shoots, allowing the client to adjust dates at will. The breach penalty remained one hundred and eighty thousand dollars.

The client signature date was August second.

"You signed this six weeks before you even suggested him to me," I said, the words tasting like ash.

I flipped to the final page of the annex. A small, crumpled receipt from a South End cafe was stapled to the parchment. It recorded two black coffees. The names printed on the reservation line read A. Whitmore and J. Vale.

The date was October nineteenth. The exact day after Andrew proposed to me.

Andrew stepped around the desk. His large hand came down, his thumb pressing hard over the printed date.

"That wasn't the first time we met, like you assumed," Andrew said.

I didn't let go of the paper.
