Chapter 3

Three weeks into our marriage, and I still felt like a ghost in my own home. The Brooks Foundation Gala would be our first major social event as husband and wife. I spent hours preparing—selecting a midnight blue gown that complemented my pale skin, styling my hair in an elegant updo, applying makeup that enhanced without overwhelming. Standing before the mirror, I allowed myself a moment of hope. Perhaps tonight would be different.

"Are you ready?" Paul appeared in the doorway, devastatingly handsome in his tailored tuxedo. His eyes skimmed over me with clinical detachment. "That dress is... suitable."

I swallowed the sting of his lukewarm assessment. "Thank you. You look handsome."

He nodded absently, already checking his watch. "Jane will meet us there. She's representing the family charity initiative tonight."

Of course she was. My stomach tightened at the mention of my sister's name, though I forced a smile. "That's wonderful."

The drive to the venue passed in silence. Paul's fingers drummed against the steering wheel, his mind clearly elsewhere. I wondered if he was thinking about seeing Jane.

When we arrived, Paul performed his husbandly duties with mechanical precision—helping me from the car, offering his arm as we walked the red carpet, introducing me as "my wife, Sophia" to business associates with the same inflection one might use to describe furniture.

I spotted Jane across the ballroom, radiant in emerald green that made her eyes sparkle. The moment Paul saw her, something in him transformed. The rigid set of his shoulders loosened; his expression softened from marble to flesh.

"Paul! Sophia!" Jane waved, making her way toward us. "The gala looks amazing this year."

"You look stunning," Paul said, his voice warm in a way I'd never heard directed at me. "That color suits you perfectly."

I stood beside them, smiling so hard my cheeks hurt, as they launched into a passionate discussion about a recent art exhibition. Paul's face animated with genuine interest, his hands gesturing enthusiastically as Jane matched his energy with insightful comments about brushwork and composition.

"Excuse me," I murmured eventually, neither of them seeming to notice as I slipped away.

I spent the next two hours drifting between conversations, accepting condolences poorly disguised as congratulations. "Such a sudden wedding," they whispered. "And after everyone thought it would be Jane..."

From across the room, I watched my husband and sister lost in conversation. Paul laughed—a real laugh that transformed his face into something beautiful and open. Jane touched his arm casually, and he didn't flinch away as he did when I reached for him.

When it was time to leave, Paul seemed genuinely disappointed. "We were just discussing Fitzgerald's use of symbolism," he explained reluctantly. "Jane has such fascinating insights."

"Perhaps we could continue another time," Jane suggested. "Sunday dinner at mother's, perhaps?"

"Perfect," Paul agreed, his eyes lingering on her face.

I felt invisible, standing there between them—a placeholder, a shadow where a wife should be.

---

The following Tuesday, I decided to bring Paul lunch at his office. A small gesture, perhaps, but I needed to feel useful, to create some connection between us.

His assistant seemed surprised but directed me to his private office. "He's on a call, but should be finishing soon."

I knocked softly before entering. Paul looked up, his expression shifting from surprise to something like irritation.

"Sophia. What are you doing here?"

"I brought lunch," I said, holding up the carefully packed container. "Your favorite—from that bistro you mentioned."

As I set the food on his desk, my eyes caught on a framed photograph prominently displayed. Jane smiled up from the silver frame, her expression carefree and beautiful.

"What's this?" The question slipped out before I could stop it.

Paul's face hardened. "It's a photograph, obviously."

"Of Jane," I said quietly. "On your desk."

He straightened some papers, not meeting my eyes. "Jane represents the kind of refined beauty and intelligence that inspires my work. She understands literature, art—she challenges my thinking."

The unspoken comparison hung in the air between us. Jane inspired him. I... did not.

"I see," I whispered, though what I saw was my own reflection in the glass of the frame—distorted, secondary, unwanted.

---

That weekend, while Paul was at his golf club, I gathered my courage and began redecorating our bedroom. The space felt impersonal, like a hotel suite—expensive but soulless. I changed the bedding to a warmer color, added some decorative pillows, hung a painting I'd selected carefully to match his taste but add some warmth.

When Paul returned, I was arranging fresh flowers by the bedside.

"What is this?" His voice was dangerously quiet.

"I thought it might make the room feel more like... ours," I explained, hope making my voice tremble slightly. "More comfortable."

"Stop changing things without permission," he snapped, anger flashing in his eyes. "This is my house, Sophia. You can't just come in and rearrange everything because you're bored."

"I'm not bored, I just wanted—"

"Put it back," he interrupted. "All of it. Exactly as it was."

That night, as I meticulously restored his bedroom to its former state, I heard the guest room door close firmly. A text message appeared on my phone:

*Your constant need to reorganize is disruptive to my routine. I'll sleep here tonight.*

I sat on the edge of our perfectly made bed, in a room that would never be mine, and wondered how long a heart could break before there was nothing left to shatter.

As I turned out the light, I caught sight of my reflection in the darkened window—fading, transparent, like I was already becoming a ghost in my own life.
