Chapter 3

"You two are getting far too bold," Ellie said, feigning annoyance as she folded one of Chloe's tiny dresses into a suitcase that evening.

The apartment was filled with the quiet hum of a Parisian night, a stark contrast to the impending upheaval in their lives.

Chloe immediately abandoned her toys and ran to hug her mother's leg, looking up with wide, innocent eyes. "We just want you to be happy, Mommy. The sunshine in Paris isn't as good as Miami's."

Caleb leaned against the doorframe of the bedroom, arms crossed over his small chest like a miniature CEO. "The market analysis report shows a higher consumer acceptance rate for your design aesthetic in the United States."

Ellie chuckled, her heart swelling with love for them. But as her smile faded, a shadow of deep-seated sadness passed through her eyes. It was fleeting, almost imperceptible, but Chloe saw it.

Her daughter's cheerful expression softened. "Mommy, do you not like Miami? Is it because of that jerk dad?"

The phrase "jerk dad" made Ellie's breath catch. It was a title the children had invented themselves, pieced together from overheard fragments and childish intuition.

She knelt, her knees sinking into the soft rug, and cupped Chloe's face in her hands. Her voice was gentle, but strained. "It has nothing to do with him. It's Mommy's own issue."

Later that night, after the children were asleep, Ellie sat alone on the living room sofa. The moonlight streamed through the large windows, painting silver stripes across the floor. She was pulled back into the memory she kept locked away.

The memory was a raw, gaping wound.

Six years ago, after leaving the Vega estate, she had discovered she was pregnant in a small, anonymous clinic. Not just pregnant. Pregnant with triplets.

The shock had been followed by a fierce, protective determination. She would do this alone. For them.

Her mother, Sharon Mills, had been her rock, arranging for her to go to a private hospital in France, away from the prying eyes of the Vegas and the Miami elite.

The pregnancy was difficult. The delivery, premature.

She remembered the beeping machines, the hushed, urgent voices of the doctors. She remembered holding two tiny, perfect babies in her arms-Caleb and Chloe.

And she remembered the doctor's grave face, his voice full of pity as he told her that one of the boys, the smallest one, hadn't made it through the complications.

Leo.

The loss of a child she never got to hold was the deepest scar on her soul. It was the true reason she never wanted to return to Miami. The city was a graveyard of her hopes, a monument to what she had lost.

A small hand gently touched her shoulder.

She flinched, startled out of her reverie. It was Caleb. He stood beside the sofa, his blue eyes, so like his father's, filled with a wisdom far beyond his years. He held out a tissue.

"Don't be sad, Mommy," he said softly. "You have us."

Chloe appeared on her other side, pushing a well-loved teddy bear into her arms. "Mr. Snuggles will keep you company. Then you won't be sad."

Tears she hadn't realized she was crying streamed down her face. She looked at her two beautiful, perceptive children, and her carefully constructed walls crumbled. She pulled them into a fierce hug, burying her face in their hair, breathing in their familiar scent.

She realized her own sorrow was a burden on them. Taking a shaky breath, she wiped her eyes.

"I'm sorry, my loves," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "Mommy shouldn't bring her bad moods to you."

Caleb shook his head, his small hand patting her back. "We're a family."

Determined to shift the atmosphere, Ellie pulled away and forced a smile. She went to her desk and retrieved a sheet of her finest stationery and a pen.

In an exaggerated, silly voice, she began to write a "contract."

"I, Ellie Mills," she read aloud, "do hereby promise to be happy every day, starting now, and to no longer be sad about things in the past."

The children watched, their expressions slowly brightening.

"I further promise to lead my esteemed co-CEOs, Mr. Caleb and Miss Chloe, to conquer the American market and build our new business empire."

Her dramatic tone worked. Giggles erupted from both of them.

"You have to sign it, Mommy! And seal it!" Chloe clapped her hands.

Ellie laughed, signing her name with a flourish and then pressing a lipstick-stained kiss below it.

Caleb took the "contract" with great seriousness, folding it carefully and placing it in his little backpack as if it were a priceless document.

The warmth returned to the apartment, chasing away the shadows. The moonlight illuminated the three of them, a tiny, resilient family, ready to face whatever came next.
