Chapter 3

{Ronan’s POV}

She whimpered in her sleep.

Even unconscious, she was restless—like her body didn’t trust peace anymore. Her legs were tangled in the sheets, one arm thrown over her chest as if trying to shield herself.

The bruises on her jaw were darker now. The swelling around her lip had set in. I hated how small she looked in my bed. Like she was trying to disappear into the mattress.

I hadn’t taken my eyes off her in over an hour.

Not because I didn’t trust my security team—no one could touch her now.

But because for the first time in years, I wasn’t sure if I’d saved someone... or destroyed her.

My phone buzzed on the glass table beside me. I let it ring once. Twice. Then I picked it up.

“Talk.”

Luca’s voice came through, low and steady. “Cleanup’s done. Cops bought the story—break-in gone bad. Two bodies disposed. The third one... he’s still breathing.”

“Name?”

“Vincent Franco. Ex–White Fang crew. Guessing he got bought out by Salvatore’s men.”

Of course he did.

“They send a message?” I asked, even though I already knew the answer.

“Yeah,” Luca muttered. “You’re not untouchable anymore.”

I exhaled, eyes drifting back to Selene. “I never was. Just better at bleeding in silence.”

A pause on the line. “Ronan…”

“Say it.”

“You know what this means. You hit back, you risk war. You never do and now they will think that you are slipping. Getting soft.”

“I’m not slipping.”

“I know. But the board’s watching. Investors are jumpy. The banks—”

“I don’t care about the fucking banks, Luca.” My voice dropped to a quiet, dangerous edge. “Do you think I’m scared of losing money?”

“No,” he said immediately. “But if they come for her again—”

“They won’t.”

Another pause.

“Ronan…”

“I said they won’t.”

I ended the call.

Silence returned.

Selene shifted again, brow furrowed like she could feel my anger from across the room.

God. She didn’t even know the half of it.

---

Two years ago, I’d been sitting in that same armchair when Damien brought her to my world for the first time.

He was grinning like a wolf who thought he’d outsmarted the pack. "This is Selene," he’d said at the gala, all charm and showmanship. "My fiancée."

She’d extended her hand with a soft, uncertain smile.

“It’s nice to meet you, Mr. Blackwood.”

I remembered the way her voice had trembled just slightly. She’d looked me in the eye, but only for a moment. Like she knew exactly what I was—but was too polite to say it.

She hadn’t belonged in our world. Not with the blood-stained suits. Not with the whispers behind closed doors.

She’d belonged somewhere bright. Somewhere soft.

I should’ve let her stay there.

---

A sharp knock on the door interrupted my thoughts and I growled knowing exactly who it was.

“Get lost,” I said.

The door opened anyway.

Of course it did.

Lena stepped inside like she owned the penthouse. Tall, sharp-cheekboned, dressed in sleek black leather and wearing a scowl like war paint.

“The hell is she doing in your bed?” she hissed.

“She’s sleeping.”

“She’s bleeding.” Lena crossed her arms. “And she’s Damien’s wife.”

“Not anymore.”

“She’s a liability, Ronan.”

I stood, slowly. “So was I, once. Didn’t stop me from becoming your boss.”

Lena rolled her eyes. “Don’t do this. This girl doesn't belong here and absolutely not worth the risk you are taking, Ronan.”

“I know.” I turned to look back at Selene. “And yet here she is.”

“You know you will have these bastards on your back for crossing them.”

I let out a laugh, “they have been on my back but too scared to be obvious about it. At least I presented a good opening for them.”

“Ronan…”

“I don't remember owing you an explanation for my actions, Lena.” I snapped and she flinched.

“I'm worried about you. I don't want you to lose everything you've built cos of her.”

“No. She’s going to make me want to build something better.”

Lena stared at me like I’d grown a second head. “You’re serious.”

“I’ve been serious about her for a long time.”

“She doesn’t know who you are.”

“She doesn’t need to. Not yet.”

“Then what’s the plan?”

I turned back to her, voice ice-cold. “The plan is: no one touches her again. And you stay in your place which doesn't involve you questioning me.”

Lena shook her head slowly. “You’re falling for a woman who doesn’t belong in this world.”

I smiled. “Then I’ll burn this world down and build one where she does.”

Lena walked out without another word.

Good.

I turned back to the bed.

Selene let out a soft breath, her face finally calm.

And for the first time in years, the devil in me didn’t want blood.

He just wanted her.

For three years, I was the perfect, invisible wife to Bart Brown. On our third anniversary, I stood in the kitchen for four hours, preparing his favorite meal with imported truffles, only to receive a cold text command. "Crysta fainted again. Get to the hospital. Now." My rare Rh-negative blood was the only thing the Brown family valued. Bart didn't want a wife; he wanted a walking blood bank for his "sick" best friend, Crysta. While I was fainting from chronic anemia, Crysta was smirking in her hospital bed, clutching Bart's hand and mocking my "peasant" lifestyle. Even his mother treated me like a servant, demanding I vacuum the floors after I'd already offered my veins for the hundredth time. When I finally reached my breaking point and signed the divorce papers, they didn't let me go quietly. They filed a false police report, accusing me of stealing a multi-million dollar diamond necklace just to watch me crawl. I didn't understand how a family could be so heartless. I had cooked their meals, cleaned their house, and literally bled for them, yet they were determined to ruin my life the moment I stopped being useful. Did they really think I was a nobody with nowhere to go? Standing outside the hospital with a bruised wrist and nothing to my name, I didn't cry. I simply took off my cheap wedding ring and dialed a secure line I hadn't touched since the day I married him. "It's me, Dad," I whispered as a fleet of black Maybachs rounded the corner. "The extraction is a go. I'm coming home."

On our wedding anniversary, I came home to find my husband, Jace, celebrating with another woman in our living room. She was wearing my mother's necklace-the only thing recovered from the explosion that killed my parents. Jace laughed, calling it a "cheap piece of junk," and tried to write me a check to buy a new one. His family called my parents' ashes "garbage" and "unsanitary." When I confronted them, Jace sided with his mother, ordering me out of the penthouse I secretly owned. He let his friends publicly humiliate me, calling me a gold-digging leech with no background. But that wasn't the worst of it. When a gunman stormed the restaurant we were in, Jace shoved me directly into the line of fire to shield his mistress. The shotgun blast tore through my arm. As I lay bleeding on the marble floor, I stared at the man who had just used me as a human shield, his face pale with terror as he protected her. In that instant, every ounce of love I ever had for him died. The pain in my arm was nothing compared to the cold, hollow void that consumed my heart. He thought he was sacrificing a quiet, useless wife to secure his future. He had no idea he had just declared war on Captain Cilla Henson, West Point valedictorian and the most lethal operator of the Eagle Task Force.

As the eldest daughter of the Sharp family, I was treated worse than a stray dog, while my younger sister Seraphina was their precious princess. When the family needed someone to marry a dying billionaire heir, they naturally chose me to take her place. To force my consent, my brothers held a peanut butter sandwich to my face—knowing it was a lethal allergy—while dangling my EpiPen just out of reach. On speakerphone, my own mother sighed in annoyance. "Let her die. It might be for the best." I choked out an agreement just as my throat closed up. But the forced engagement broke my sacred mystical vow, causing me to violently cough up my own lifeblood. Seeing the blood, Seraphina dramatically fainted. My brothers instantly carried her to the hospital, stepping over my dying body and leaving me to bleed out on the cold marble floor. I had to use a forbidden blood rune, draining my last ounce of strength, just to survive the night. Even the mystical Order I served offered no comfort, calling only to demand I secure ten billion dollars for them or forfeit my soul for eternity. Abandoned by my blood family and my spiritual master, I was completely alone, left with nothing but a broken body and a ticking clock. But they made one fatal mistake: they let me live. I turned to the dying heir they forced me to marry, a man plagued by a dark curse only I could cure. "I will be your wife, and I will save your life," I told him. The crystal chandeliers of the Waldorf Astoria were still burned into my retinas when the harsh, fluorescent lights of New York Presbyterian’s VIP wing took over. The transition was violent—one second Maddox was standing beside me in a bespoke tuxedo, bidding on a Chagall at the silent auction, and the next, he was a crumpled heap of velvet and bone on the marble floor. Now, the steady, agonizing beep of the heart monitor was the only sound in the sterile suite. Dr. Evans stood at the foot of the bed, his face a mask of practiced clinical empathy. "End-stage renal failure," he said, the words dropping into the room like lead weights. "His kidneys are shutting down. Without a transplant, Maddox doesn't have much time." I stopped breathing. The air in the room suddenly felt too thin, too cold. I looked down at my husband of eight years.
