Chapter 4

The club was very loud and full of very passionate people. The dance floor was the part that people love the most. Tucked away among the others was Angel. She was dancing like crazy with one of her crazy cousins, Ellena. She had just come from Las Vegas for a photo shoot for a famous fashion magazine. Ellena deliberately stayed at Angel's apartment while she was spending her two weeks of holiday in New York. And the first thing Ellena did was take her boring cousin to a party. "Wow, isn't this fun, cousin?" "Superb!" shouted Angel amidst the deafening music. All her nerves were shaking and awakening to the party. "I told you that you should have fun once in a while. Being a secretary makes you age faster." "I like my job." "Billshit. Over time, you will become a company slave and shit." Angel ignored her cousin's sarcasm and continued dancing to the music. She freed herself to do anything tonight. She even wore one of Ellena's sexy dresses that she had just brought from Las Vegas. The dress was thigh-length, had a deep V-neck and almost touched her navel. Underneath the dress she only wore a thin thong and something for her breast. It was definitely not a bra. She didn't wear it at all tonight. Ellena gave her a bra cup with tape to protect her precious assets. "Psst..." "What?" "A man is approaching you," Ellena elbowed her hard in the arm. Angel looked to the right to find the man Ellena was referring to. His face was not bad. He wore dark blue denim, a fitted t-shirt and a leather jacket. His style was masculine and not too bawdy like the others. Angel felt she needed to give the man a chance. Especially because she wanted to forget the face of her asshole boss. "Hi." "Hi." "I've been watching you and seeing something beautiful in you." "Interesting. What do you want from my cousin?" Ellena giggled beside her. She pushed Angel to approach the man. She encouraged with whispers that sounded like the devil. "He is quite handsome. Let's see if his wallet is as handsome as his face or not?" Angel glanced at her cousin briefly and tried to ignore her. She was not really a material woman. But, the idea that Ellena put forward was quite good. She had to know first whether this man had money or not. "Want to drink with me?" "Of course. By the way, I'm Angel. And this is my cousin, Ellena." "Hello. You can take my sexy cousin with you," Ellena waved her hand in the air. "I'm Dimitri. Pleased to meet you." "Pleased to meet you too. But you had better get my cousin out of here before another man takes her from you," Ellena giggled annoyingly. Angel really wanted to hit her on the head so that her cousin could be a little saner. "Okay. Come on, Angel. You can order whatever you want." "Thank You." Angel walked after Dimitri towards a quieter bar counter. She looked back to see her crazy cousin. Ellena was flirting with a man in a red shirt who was interested in her. Angel chuckled seeing her cousin who was very excited tonight. She was grateful because Ellena called her this afternoon and said that she had landed at the airport. Her cousin really liked having unexpected surprises. Angel was very happy when her cousin said she was on her way to her apartment and would stay for two weeks. At least, Ellena could help her take her mind off that bastard Xander. "What do you want?" "Dirty Martini please. And some chocolate treats." "Perfect. Are you a chocolate lover?" "Not really. But I like the combination of martini and chocolate." "Unique. Dexter, please bring this beautiful woman's order. And I want borboun with ice." The bartender raised his thumb before he threw the napkin onto the table. Angel suddenly became awkward after the bartender left to make their order. To be honest, she was a bit of an introvert and made very few friends during this time. "Well, this might be a little awkward," Dimitri started. He didn't hide his admiration for Angel at all. Especially her cleavage which tapered sharply at her navel. The tight dress barely accommodated her breasts. Angel could catch where Dimitri's eyes were moving. But she ignored it. She told herself over and over again that it wasn't all Dimitri's fault. She deliberately wore that dress to tease all the men in this club. "Are you and your cousin celebrating something? You guys danced passionately." "Actually, we are not celebrating anything. We are just having fun. My cousin just finished a photo shoot in Las Vegas. She needed to relax her tense muscles. "So your cousin is a model?" "Yes. She is a very talented model." "How about you?" "Me? Oh, my job is very boring. I'm a secretary." "Wow, being a secretary is never boring. Is your boss a bald old man with a pot-belly and an ugly face?" Angel chuckled dryly. She brought Xander's face to her mind and snorted. None of Dimitri's descriptions came close to Xander's figure. "Yeah, something like that. He's a very disgusting pervert." "Owh, are you okay working with him?" Dimitri's question was interrupted by Dexter, who came with their order. He placed a plate of very tempting chocolate cake in front of Angel and her refreshing-looking martini. Angel couldn't wait any longer to eat the cake. "Of course. He keeps our relationship professional. But he dated so many women out there. Some of his clients even slept with him. I'm tired of having to pretend to hide his dirty secrets from the public." Angel shifted her body closer to Dimitri when someone took a seat next to her. She did it to prevent others from hearing her while she was badmouthing Xander. "Are you serious? He's a disgusting old goat. Does he have a wife?" "No. He is not married and will never be married, I think." "Now I know the reason why he likes to tease women. He thirsts for a woman's caress. Thankfully, you are safe." "I am indeed very lucky." Angel sipped her martini calmly. She felt her back slightly hot. Her instincts had never been wrong so far. After finishing half her martini, she looked back to see what was happening. "Hello, Angel. So, you think I'm a disgusting old goat, huh?" "Xa-Xander." Her body jerked forward and hit Xander's hard chest. Her plump breasts in the too-small dress were squeezed against his hard chest. She caught a glimpse of mischief in her boss's eyes as he stared at her breasts. Angela opened her mouth to try to say something, but nothing came out. She was too shocked to process the things that were happening around her quickly. Xander's large palm cupped her jaw, and suddenly something soft was pressed against her lips. Her boss was kissing her! His soft lips moved over hers, sucking them gently. Xander's tongue stroked the seam of her lips slowly. Angela was lost in the kiss. She closed her eyes and her lips moved instinctively following Xander's lips. "Did I surprise you, Angel?" She was left gaping after Xander pulled away. Her body froze, and she was at a loss for words. She was exactly like a fish that had just been taken out of the water. Her lips opened and closed repeatedly without being able to say a word. How could the boss be there? And what was worse, Xander heard all the nonsense she said to Dimitri. Oh God, I'm in trouble.

I spent two years navigating the stratified air of Spencer Kensington’s world, thinking I was the woman he loved. I even ate instant ramen for months to afford a vintage camera lens for our anniversary. When I got a mysterious text about "Operation Blue Moon," I thought it was our private signal for a proposal. Instead, I walked into a limestone fortress to find the Kensington and Van Der Woodsen Engagement Party in full swing. Spencer wasn't there for a romantic dinner; he was standing under a crystal chandelier, announcing his "business merger" with a blonde heiress. When I confronted him in a service hallway, he didn't apologize. He offered to buy me a brownstone and keep me as his "side project" while his mother, Victoria, watched from the balcony like a queen. "Vanessa is just furniture," he said, his voice full of a terrifying sincerity. "But you're the one I love. I can give you a life of ease." When I refused to be his dirty little secret, the retaliation was instant and brutal. By the next morning, I was fired from my reporting job, my father’s nursing home funding was pulled, and I returned home to find my apartment condemned by the city. My entire life was piled in wet boxes on a rain-soaked sidewalk. I couldn't understand how one family could have the power to erase a person’s existence in a single night. How could the man who kissed me yesterday watch his mother leave me homeless and penniless today? Standing in the rain next to my ruined belongings, a black SUV pulled up and Mayor Julian Sterling stepped out. He didn't offer me pity; he offered me a deal. "The Kensingtons are panicked," he said, his eyes cold and calculating. "And panicked people make mistakes. You have a reason to watch them burn. I want to see what you know." I took his hand, knowing he was just as dangerous as the people I was fighting, but I was done being the victim. This wasn't just a breakup anymore; it was a war.

I stood in the corner of the grand ballroom, trying to stay invisible despite the massive diamond on my finger. As the fiancée of the billionaire Arturo Watts, I was supposed to be the most envied woman in the room, but the suffocating scent of lilies felt more like a funeral than a gala. A waiter’s elbow clipped my arm, sending my clutch crashing to the floor and spilling its contents for everyone to see. Among my lipstick and phone lay a heavy, glittering brooch—the Pink Star diamond—that had just been reported stolen from the neck of a billionaire socialite. "Thief! Just like her father," the crowd hissed as cameras flashed like gunfire in my face. Tiffany Watts ground her heel into my bag, her eyes gleeful as she watched the "scammer's daughter" finally get caught. Just as security reached for my wrists, Arturo stepped out of the shadows, but he wasn't there to save me. He grabbed my face and kissed me with a brutal, bruising intensity, branding me in front of the news drones to turn my humiliation into a PR stunt for his company’s stock price. I thought I was being protected, but I soon realized I was just a prisoner in a gilded cage with new locks on the windows. I discovered the truth Arturo was trying to shred: I wasn’t his fiancée, I was his "key code." He was using my name to access fifty million dollars of my father’s hidden money, and he had blocked my FBI application to ensure I’d never uncover the trail. "I did it for you," he whispered, standing over me with the same cold, unreadable eyes he used on his business rivals. He thought he could buy my silence with designer gowns and a fake romance, but he forgot that I am my father’s daughter. I’m done being a liability in his corporate games. I’ve found the secret account and recorded his confession. If Arturo Watts wants to treat me like a target, I’m going to make sure I’m the one who hits the mark and takes every cent he’s hiding.

I was just a placeholder, a warm body in silk sheets to keep the bed from getting cold while my billionaire "owner," Garrick Head, dreamt of another man’s wife. To the world, I was Ever Wells, the lucky girl he’d plucked from obscurity, but in reality, I was a doll on a 145-day contract, counting every second until I could disappear. Everything shattered when a burner phone buzzed in my hand with a message that turned my blood to ice: "I know your secret, Everly." My real name was the one thing I had buried to protect my four-year-old son, Leo, who was hidden in a cramped apartment in Queens. Just as the blackmailer closed in, Leo’s asthma flared into a life-threatening fever, and the medication he needed cost thousands I didn't have. When I tried to siphon money to save him, Garrick sensed my desperation and froze my credit cards, mocking my "poverty" and demanding I crawl back to his bed to earn his favor. The nightmare intensified at a high-society gala when Clarence Frazier, a dangerous ghost from my past, cornered me. He mouthed my real name in front of the cameras, his eyes promising to tear my fake life apart. Garrick’s possessiveness turned violent as he broke a man’s jaw for insulting me, yet in the same breath, he reminded me I was nothing but a "rented whore" he’d bought off a shelf. I had to smile while he kissed me and detach my mind while he touched me, all while siphoning pennies into a hidden account. He thought he could finalize my imprisonment with a twenty-million-dollar apartment on Central Park West, calling it a gift when it was really just a heavier lock on my golden cage. "I don't want to save the world," I whispered to the empty, marble penthouse after he fell asleep. "I just want to save my son." With a predator from my past watching my every move and a master who treated me like a pet, I realized I couldn't wait for my contract to end. I had to run tonight, or Leo and I would both die in this cage.
