Chapter 2

Whitney barely slept.

She just lay there in her narrow dorm bed, staring at the pen from Darius Lakes sitting on her nightstand like it was daring her to do something. D.L. She'd told Kate it was nothing. Told herself it was nothing. But every time she closed her eyes, she kept seeing his face in the hallway-that stupid smirk gone, and something raw underneath.

My grandfather was a janitor.

She rolled over and punched her pillow.

"Stop thinking about him," she whispered to the dark.

The dark didn't say anything back. Obviously.

---

Morning came way too fast. Whitney dragged herself to her 8 AM class, then to h10 AM class AM, then to ,,, dining h,,all where she inhaled oatmeal in about three minutes because she had a library shift at noon. By 2 PM, she'd shelved two hundred books and answered fourteen questions about where the reserve section was.

Then her phone buzzed.

Coach Hartley – Mandatory meeting. 4 PM. Debate -all All team members.

No mention of nationals. No mention of partnerships. Just that flat, commanding tone that made her spine stiffen whether she wanted it to or not.

She texted Kate: What's this about?

Kate wrote back: No idea. But Chen says Lakes has been pacing outside Hartley's office all morning.

Whitney's stomach did this weird flip thing. She told herself she was just hungry.

---

The debate hall looked completely different in the afternoon. Sunlight was streaming through the high windows, lighting up all these little dust motes floating around like tiny planets. About twenty of them filled the risers-the whole debate club, from nervfirst-year studentshmen to smug seniors.

Whitney slid into a seat near the back. Kate was already there, saving her spot.

"Lakes is front row," Kate whispered, nodding toward the stage.

Darius sat with his back straight, not talking to anyone. He wearing a grey sweater today, no blazer. His hair was a little messy, like he'd been running his hands through it. He didn't turn around when Whitney walked in.

Good, she thought. Neither did I.

Coach Hartley lumbered onto the stage, clipboard in hand. He didn't need a microphone. His voice filled the whole room like someone pouring gravel into a metal drum.

"Thanks for coming. I'll keep this short."

He paced a little, reading from his clipboard. "Regional results are in. We took second overall. Chen and Patel qualified for semifinals in their division. Good work."

Polite applause.

"Now. Nationals." Hartley stopped pacing. "The format's changed. Two-person teams. No alternates. That means every school sends one pair, and that pair has to be ready for anything."

The room went quiet.

"I've spent the last week reviewing every round, every speaker, every possible combination." Hartley's eyes swept across everyone. "And I've made my decision."

Whitney held her breath.

"The team representing this university at the National Debate Championship will be-" Hartley paused, and Whitney could've sworn he was enjoying this- "Whitney Bennett and Darius Lakes."

The silence that followed was the loudest thing Whitney had ever heard.

Then the murmuring started.

"Bennett? The freshman?"

"Lakes is a sophomore, he should get a senior partner."

"They hate each other."

"This is going to be a disaster."

Whitney's face went hot. She felt Kate squeeze her arm, but she barely noticed. Her eyes had found Darius. He was already looking at her. His expression was impossible to read, but his jaw was tight.

He doesn't want this either, she realized.

Hartley raised a hand. "Quiet."

The room settled.

"I know what you're thinking," Hartley said. "You're thinking they don't get along. You're thinking their styles don't match. You're thinking there are safer choices."

He set down his clipboard. "You're right. There are safer choices. Safer choices don't win championships."

He looked at Whitney. Then at Darius. "These two have something I haven't seen in fifteen years of coaching. They push each other. They challenge each other. And when they stop fighting long enough to listen? They're unstoppable."

Whitney wanted to argue. Wanted to stand up and say you're wrong, we can't work together, I won't do it.

But Hartley wasn't finished.

"You have until Friday to decide if you're in," he said. "If both of you agree, you start practice on Monday. If one of you says no, I send Chen and Patel. They're solid. They won't win, but they're solid."

He picked up his clipboard. "Meeting adjourned."

---

The crowd broke up slowly. Little clusters formed around Chen and Patel (people offering condolences) and around Darius (people offering congratulations he clearly didn't want). Whitney stayed in her seat, frozen.

"Come on," Kate said, tugging her arm. "Let's get out of here."

"Not yet."

Kate looked at her. Really looked. "Whitney. You don't have to do this."

"I know."

"You can say no. Hartley said it yourself. You have until Friday."

"I know."

Kate sighed. "Fine. But I'm getting coffee. You have fifteen minutes before I come back and drag you out myself."

She left.

Whitney sat alone in the nearly empty hall. The sunlight had shifted, casting long shadows across the floor. She watched the dust motes dance and tried to figure out if she was being brave or just an idiot.

"Bennett."

She didn't look up. "Lakes."

Darius climbed the risers and sat down one row behind her. Close enough to talk. Far enough to pretend they weren't.

"You heard Hartley," he said.

"I heard him."

"You're not running."

"I don't run."

"Good." A pause. "Neither do I."

Whitney turned. He was closer than she'd thought. His knees almost touched the back of her seat. Up close, she could see faint shadows under his eyes. He hadn't slept either.

"Why do you want this?" she asked.

"Because I want to win."

"That's not a real reason."

"It's the only reason that matters."

Whitney shook her head. "You could win with anyone. Chen's good. Patel's better. You don't need me."

Darius was quiet for a long moment. When he spoke, his voice was lower. "Chen freezes under pressure. Patel chokes on cross-examination. They're both afraid of me."

"And I'm not?"

"No." His eyes held hers. "You're the only person in this building who's ever called me out in front of an audience and actually meant it. You didn't care about my name. You didn't care about my record. You just saw a target and went for the throat."

Whitney's heart was pounding. "That's called debating."

"That's called guts." Darius leaned forward. "I don't need a partner who agrees with me. I need a partner who makes me better. That's you."

She wanted to argue. Wanted to list all the reasons this would fail-their different backgrounds, their different styles, the way he made her feel like she was constantly proving something.

But underneath all that, underneath the fear and the pride and the stubborn, stupid need to be right, there was this little voice.

Imagine what we'd do to someone else.

"One condition," she said.

Darius raised an eyebrow. "Name it."

"We're equals. I'm not your research assistant. I'm not your opening act. We split everything fifty-fifty-research, writing, speaking time. And if you ever pull that 'point of information' stunt during one of my speeches again, I will walk off that stage and leave you to debate yourself."

Darius stared at her. Then, slowly, his mouth curved. Not a smirk. An actual smile.

"Deal."

Whitney stuck out her hand. He took it. His palm was warm, his grip firm. They shook once-quick, businesslike, nothing more.

But Whitney felt it anyway. A spark. A current. Something that had nothing to do with debate and everything to do with the way his thumb brushed her knuckle before he let go.

"Monday," he said, standing. "Seven AM. Debate hall."

"Seven AM is criminal."

"Champions wake up early."

Whitney snorted. "Champions also sleep."

Darius walked down the risers, then paused at the bottom. He didn't turn around. "Hey, Bennett?"

"What?"

"Don't throw away the pen."

She watched him push through the exit doors and disappear into the afternoon light.

Only then did she reach into her pocket. Her fingers found the metal barrel, the engraved letters, the weight of something she couldn't name.

She still didn't throw it away.

---

That night, Kate found her sitting on the floor of their dorm, surrounded by debate notes and empty coffee cups.

"So?" Kate asked, stepping over a stack of index cards. "You're doing it?"

Whitney looked up. Her eyes were tired but kind of bright.

"Yeah," she said. "I'm doing it."

Kate grinned. "This is either going to be the greatest thing that ever happens to you or a complete train wreck."

"Maybe both."

"Probably both." Kate flopped onto her bed. "Just promise me one thing."

"What?"

"When you fall in love with him, I get to say 'I told you so.'"

Whitney threw a pillow at her head.

But she didn't say no.
