Chapter 2

I didn't even start the engine.

Before I could back out of the parking space, Shayne, my executive assistant, tapped on the passenger window. I unlocked the doors.

"Ma'am," Shayne said, sliding into the seat. "The principal is refusing to sign the withdrawal forms without a secondary confirmation. He's stalling."

"Fine," I replied. "Bring the tablet. We'll do it on the main stage."

I marched right back into the academy's grand hall. The crowd hadn't dispersed. In fact, it had grown louder, a chaotic buzz of gossip and confusion.

Leo stood near the front row, his phone pressed hard against his ear.

"Dad, you have to get here now," Leo demanded, his voice echoing off the high walls. "She completely ruined it. She canceled the whole program! The principal is literally suspending the trip right now."

"I'm already here," a voice boomed from the back.

The heavy wooden doors at the rear of the hall slammed open.

Kyle stormed down the center aisle, his tie loosened, his face flushed with anger. Vivian hurried close behind him, her hand gripping his elbow tightly.

Kyle shoved past a group of whispering parents and planted himself directly in front of Leo.

"Are you okay?" Kyle asked the boy.

Leo nodded, pointing a sharp finger at me. "She's trying to take away my spot."

Kyle spun around. He crossed the distance between us, stopping just inches from my face.

"What kind of sick game are you playing, Iris?" Kyle spat.

I met his furious gaze. "I'm not playing anything. I withdrew my foundation's money."

"You abandoned him five years ago!" Kyle shouted, throwing his arms wide for the audience to see. "You walked out on this family. And now you show up out of nowhere, trying to play mother of the year?"

Murmurs rippled through the seated parents. A few shook their heads in my direction.

"You think knowing a few people at the Whitmore Foundation means you can use money to force the kid to acknowledge you?" Kyle scoffed, his tone dripping with disdain. "You're delusional."

Leo stepped out from behind his father's shadow. The presence of his dad instantly restored his arrogance.

"I told you I don't need you," Leo sneered at me.

Kyle patted the teenager's shoulder, offering a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, son. You don't need to beg her for anything. Dad will make sure you go on that trip."

The word *abandoned* rang in my ears.

A frigid calm settled over my chest. I didn't yell. I didn't defend myself to the gossiping crowd.

"Shayne," I called out.

My assistant stepped forward, a sleek black tablet in his hands.

"Connect to the school's main projector," I instructed.

Shayne tapped the glass screen twice.

"Hey! What are you doing?" Vivian shrieked. She let go of Kyle's arm and marched toward Shayne. "You can't just hijack a school assembly! Security!"

Shayne merely shifted his weight, blocking her path with his broad shoulders. Vivian stumbled back, intimidated.

I ignored her, keeping my eyes locked on my ex-husband and my son.

"Since you all firmly believe I didn't want Leo," I announced, my voice carrying to the very back row, "let's show everyone exactly how I left."

The massive screen above the stage flickered to life.

A harsh, grainy video filled the display. It was security footage from the living room of our old house.

The speakers crackled, projecting Vivian's giggles across the auditorium. On screen, Kyle had Vivian pinned against the sofa, their clothes half-undone. The door swung open, and the digital version of me dropped a bag of groceries on the floor.

Gasps erupted from the parents. A woman in the second row covered her mouth. A man near the aisle cursed under his breath.

"Turn it off!" Vivian screamed, her fake sweet demeanor completely shattered. "Kyle, make her turn it off! This is illegal!"

The video jumped to a new timecode.

Kyle's mother stood by the front door, her arms wrapped tightly around a crying, three-year-old Leo. A lawyer in a gray suit tossed a stack of divorce papers onto the coffee table.

*"Sign them,"* the lawyer's recorded voice droned over the speakers. *"Give up primary custody, or we drag this out until you're bankrupt."*

Then came the final clip.

The younger version of me collapsed onto the hardwood floor. Tears streamed down my face. I crawled toward Kyle's mother, reaching desperately for my screaming toddler.

*"Please!"* I sobbed on the recording, my knees hitting the floorboards. *"Keep the house. Keep every cent in the bank accounts. Just give me my baby back. Please, Kyle, don't take him!"*

Dead silence swallowed the auditorium.

No one whispered. No one moved.

I looked at Leo.

The color had entirely vanished from my son's face. His mouth hung slightly open, his eyes wide and fixed on the frozen image of his mother kneeling on the floor, begging for him.

"You lied to me," Leo whispered, his voice cracking.

Kyle's face turned a violent shade of purple. Humiliation twisted his features into pure rage.

"You crazy bitch!" Kyle roared.

He lunged at me, raising his hand high to strike my face.

I didn't flinch.

Before Kyle's hand could descend, Shayne stepped into his path. My assistant caught Kyle's wrist mid-air, twisting the joint sharply downward.

Kyle let out a strangled yelp, his knees buckling from the pressure.

"Touch her," Shayne warned in a low, dangerous tone, "and I'll break it."

Shayne shoved him backward. Kyle stumbled, barely catching his balance against the front row of chairs.

Desperate to salvage his pride, Kyle pointed a shaking finger at me.

"You're a fraud!" Kyle yelled, scanning the crowd for anyone who would listen. "She's a fake heiress! I've worked at Whitmore Industries for years. I know the chairman's family. The real daughter isn't a woman like Iris!"

I tilted my head, studying the pathetic man I used to love.

"Is that right?" I asked. "And why do you think you got into Whitmore in the first place?"

Kyle straightened his jacket, jutting his chin out. "I earned my position. My abilities got me hired."

"Shayne. Next slide."

The screen blinked.

An internal HR document appeared. It was Kyle's original resume from six years ago. Across the top right corner, a massive red stamp read: *REJECTED - FAILED INITIAL SCREENING*.

"No," Kyle muttered, shaking his head frantically. "That's doctored. You forged that! Anyone can make a fake stamp on a PDF!"

"You think I'd forge a rejection letter for an entry-level position?" I asked. "You aren't that important, Kyle."

The slide transitioned again.

This time, it displayed a private email exchange.

*Dad,* the message read. *I know his scores aren't high enough, but please give him one interview. I want him to succeed.*

"You didn't pass the screening, Kyle," I told him. "You failed the aptitude test. You failed the personality assessment. I begged my father to give you a chance."

"Liar!" Kyle spat. "I ran the Vanguard merger! I brought in millions!"

"Because I handed it to you," I shot back.

The screen shifted a third time.

An official corporate authorization form appeared. It was the approval for the first core project Kyle ever managed—the project that launched his entire career.

At the very bottom of the page, the final approval signature zoomed in, filling the screen.

The cursive letters were clear, bold, and undeniable.

*Iris Whitmore.*

Kyle's jaw dropped. His eyes darted from the giant signature on the screen to my face, panic finally setting in.

"No," Kyle breathed out, his legs visibly trembling. "No, that's impossible. You... you can't be..."

"I protected your fragile ego for years," I stated, my tone devoid of any sympathy. "I gave you your career. I gave you your lifestyle. And you repaid me by stealing my son."

I turned away from Kyle's horrified expression and looked back at Leo.

The teenager hadn't moved an inch.

He didn't care about the canceled trip anymore. He didn't care about the aviation lab or the ski training.

Leo just stared at the paused frame of the video in the corner of the screen—the image of me on my knees, weeping for him.

For five years, he had hated me. Now, the realization crashed over him that he had been hating the wrong person all along.

Tears welled up in Leo's eyes. He took a hesitant step toward me.

"Mom..." he choked out.

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket again. I pulled it out, glancing at the screen.

It was a photo from the same unknown number.

A picture of my father, lying unconscious in a hospital bed, surrounded by monitors.

*We warned you not to come back,* the text below it read. *Now, you lose everything.*
