Chapter 5

"Because Molly always wants the best," Lena's recorded voice hissed through the tiny speaker.

I jammed my thumb down on the stop button. The plastic casing cracked under the pressure.

Sadie stood in the hallway. She squeezed the neck of her stuffed pink rabbit so hard the seams stretched. Her bare feet shifted against the hardwood floor.

"What does seduce mean?" Sadie asked. Her voice barely carried over the hum of the refrigerator.

I froze.

I dropped the recorder onto the kitchen island. I crossed the room and sank to my knees, bringing my eyes level with hers.

"Where did you hear that word, bug?" I asked.

"Mom said it in the car," Sadie whispered. "She told me you seduced Daddy before I was born."

"It is an adult word," I told her, keeping my tone steady. "Your mom is confused. Daniel and I were just friends a long time ago."

Sadie didn't blink. She hugged the rabbit tighter against her chest. "Then why did Mom cry in the bathroom?" she asked. "She locked the door and told me you wanted to steal her place. She said you wanted to be my real mother."

Every hospital run, paid bill, and canceled plan I had made for Lena had been twisted into a theft.

Daniel pulled a clear evidence bag from the kitchen drawer and sealed the recorder inside without defending his past.

"We hand this to Rosa and Dr. Patel tomorrow morning," Daniel stated, sealing the plastic track. He looked directly at Sadie. "Your mother is not allowed to feed you scary stories in secret anymore. We are ending the game."

Sadie looked at the sealed bag, then returned to her bedroom and shut the door.

I pulled my cell phone from my pocket and dialed Colin. He answered on the fourth ring, the sound of keyboard typing echoing through the line.

"I need you at the county office tomorrow at nine," I said. "Lena hid a voice recorder in Sadie's backpack. She is telling her I stole Daniel."

The typing stopped.

"I have a client closing at nine," Colin replied. His tone remained even, devoid of any shock. "Do not hand that over to the state, Molly. It is just Lena venting her emotions. Keep it out of a legal fight."

"She is psychologically abusing an eight-year-old."

"She is building a defense," Colin corrected. "If you submit that tape, you drag nine years of history onto the public record. We do not need that exposure."

"Exposure of what?" I challenged. "I took care of her. I took care of her kid. I have nothing to hide."

"A judge will look at your past with Daniel and call it a conflict of interest," Colin argued smoothly. "You are letting your anger at Lena dictate your legal strategy."

I gripped the edge of the kitchen counter. "Why do you know the name Northgate Women's Clinic, Colin?"

Silence stretched through the receiver. I counted the seconds in my head. One. Two. Five. Eight. Nine.

"I only know a little," Colin finally answered, his voice dropping an octave. "And by then, you had already chosen me."

He hung up.

I stared at the dark screen, then shoved the white leather wedding binder off the dining table. It hit the floor hard.

In the empty space left behind, I lined up Sadie's yellow school emergency forms, the daily plastic pillbox, and the bagged voice recorder.

Rosa hit the spacebar on her keyboard. The recording stopped playing.

The fluorescent lights in the family-services office buzzed overhead. Rosa wrote one line across a blue file folder.

"Mother feeding adult intimate conflict to child," Rosa read aloud, capping the pen. She looked across the metal desk at Daniel and me. "This changes the visitation parameters. You both need to submit a seven-day joint care log before I allow any supervised family visits next week."

"Lena needs to be barred from contacting her entirely," Daniel demanded. He sat rigid in the plastic guest chair. "She is weaponizing the kid."

Rosa opened a manila folder and slid a wrinkled, coffee-stained sheet of paper across the desk.

"Your ex-wife filed this through her rehab therapist an hour ago," Rosa said.

I picked up the paper. Lena's frantic, slanted handwriting covered the page.

"Molly and Daniel are conspiring to steal my daughter," the first line read. "They manipulated the placement officer. I demand Molly Whitaker's temporary placement authority be revoked immediately."

I scanned the rest of the letter. She wrote the phrase "my daughter" twelve times. Not once did she mention Sadie's reading club, her allergy medication, or the night terrors. It was a manifesto of ownership, not a plea for a child's safety.

"She is trying to disqualify me so Sadie goes to a stranger," I said, dropping the paper back onto the metal desk.

"She is trying to separate the two of you," Rosa said. "If her lawyer can show that either caregiver is blocking safe reunification or coaching Sadie against her mother, it can damage this placement."

"Even with a drug charge?" Daniel asked sharply.

"Family court still looks for safe reunification when treatment works," Rosa said. "Keep your care logs precise. Document appointments, sleep, school, and every approved contact."

Cold air hit my face as Daniel followed me to my car.

"You need to stop waiting for Lena to hit rock bottom," Daniel said, stopping two feet away. "She installed a basement down there years ago."

"I am not waiting for anything," I fired back, pulling my car keys from my purse. "I am trying to keep Sadie from realizing her mother is a monster."

"Sadie already knows," Daniel said quietly. "She is just waiting for the adults to admit it."

Daniel pressed a small, heavy object into my palm.

The worn brass keychain. The one from the Brookfall community theater.

"Lena's lies didn't start with a plastic tape recorder," Daniel told me, his eyes locking onto mine. "And they won't end just because we stay quiet. You know what happened nine years ago."

The cold metal dug into my skin. I opened my hand, preparing to shove the keychain right back into his chest.

The heavy glass doors of the county building banged open.

Rosa hurried down the steps with a thick brown envelope.

"Wait!" Rosa shouted, rushing across the pavement. "The rehab center just faxed over a release for an old medical authorization. I need both of your signatures to accept it into the custody file."

She stopped beside the car and held it out.

The printed black header on the top left corner glared in the sunlight.

Northgate Women's Clinic.

Daniel reached his hand out to take the envelope.

I slammed my hand down over the paper, pinning the flap shut before his fingers could touch it.

Through the thin, cheap paper of the envelope, the dark ink of the top line bled through the back. I looked at the reversed letters.

pregnancy test: negative

I lifted my head. Across the street, idling directly next to the fire hydrant, sat Colin's silver sedan.
