Chapter 2

The tension in the formal dining room was thick enough to choke on. The only sound was the agonizing scrape of silver against fine bone china. Scarlett ate with a slow, predatory grace, entirely immune to the suffocating atmosphere.

Catherine, vibrating with unspent venom, finally snapped. "At least attempt to hold your fork properly, Scarlett. You eat like a feral animal. Two years on the streets clearly did nothing for your pedigree."

Ashley chimed in, passing the breadbasket with a sympathetic sigh. "It must have been so hard out there, Mom. We need to lower our expectations."

Scarlett calmly placed her silverware parallel on her plate. She picked up her linen napkin and dabbed her mouth with a slow, deliberate precision that made Catherine's critique look utterly ridiculous.

"My apologies," Scarlett said, her voice a soft, lethal purr. "I must have forgotten the Sinclair family motto: Keep the surface polished, even when the foundation is rotting."

The table went dead silent. It was a surgical strike, aimed directly at Catherine's desperate obsession with high-society optics while her marriage and family crumbled.

Catherine's face drained of blood, then flooded with furious color. "You ungrateful little bitch—!" she hissed, slamming her palm onto the mahogany table.

CLATTER.

Theodore Sr. threw his fork onto his plate. The piercing shriek of metal silenced the room instantly.

Scarlett glanced at her grandfather. She noted the slight tremor in his left hand, the faint bluish tint around his lips. Mild hypoxia. Early-stage heart failure, her mind diagnosed clinically.

Theodore's eyes were chips of blue ice as he glared at Catherine. "For two years, this house has been peaceful. The girl is back for five minutes, and you turn my dining room into a warzone. Is this your idea of motherhood?"

The public castration made Catherine shrink into her chair, humiliated. Ashley opened her mouth to defend her, but Theodore silenced her with a single, warning look.

He turned to Scarlett, his features softening. "Don't worry about your schooling, Scarlett. I'm making calls. I'll get you into a respectable prep school."

Catherine couldn't help herself. "She doesn't deserve it!" she spat. "Her transcripts are a joke. No decent academy will touch her. You're throwing money into a fire!"

Ashley looked down, hiding a smug smile. She was the valedictorian. She was the investment.

"I will make a donation," Theodore growled, his tone leaving no room for debate. "A massive one. Money talks."

Scarlett watched the drama unfold like a boring movie she'd already seen. It had nothing to do with her.

Later, in the sterile, untouched confines of her old bedroom, Scarlett unzipped her duffel. She bypassed the clothes and pulled out a sleek, matte-black device. Untraceable. Encrypted to military standards.

She booted it up and opened a dark-web messaging client.

Recipient: Simon Foster. Message: Miss M. One vial of Serum S+ secured. Auction next week. Standard terms.

She hit send.

Downstairs, they were fighting over prep school tuition. Up here, as 'Miss M'—the phantom architect of the world's most coveted biological enhancer—she was casually initiating a transaction that would move tens of millions of dollars.

The reply was instantaneous. Simon Foster: Acknowledged, Miss M. The market is rabid. We anticipate a bloodbath at the auction.

Scarlett walked to the window, looking down at the manicured lawns bathed in moonlight. Her grandfather's intervention was convenient, but irrelevant. She had her own empire to run, and playing the role of the tragic Sinclair daughter was a temporary, highly annoying side quest.
