The Cold Alpha's Runaway Mate Novel Cover

The Cold Alpha's Runaway Mate

For four years, I was the unseen, wolfless Mate of Alpha Duke Blake. When his dying grandmother demanded an heir, he agreed without emotion, treating me as nothing but a vessel. At the funeral, he stood with his Beta, Jossie, allowing a neighboring Alpha to offer condolences to her as his future Luna while I was ignored. I signed the Mate Rejection papers and fled the pack. A week later, Duke bypassed my apartment lock, kidnapped me, and threw me onto his bed, demanding I bear his child. I stopped fighting and let despair fall silently. Seeing my broken state, his cold facade cracked and he fled—but my tears stopped. If paper cannot sever this bond, I will tear it apart myself.

Chapter 3

Kyla POV:

The early morning light was thin and gray as I slipped out of my room, a single backpack slung over my shoulder. It contained my old clothes, my laptop, and the few personal trinkets I owned. Everything else, I left behind.

I avoided the grand staircase and the main hallways, taking the winding service corridors and gardeners' paths that I had learned over four years of trying to be invisible. The air was cool and damp, smelling of wet earth and new beginnings.

In the cavernous garage, amongst Duke's collection of luxury sports cars and black SUVs, sat a dusty, ten-year-old Honda. It had been Eleanor's, a car she'd kept for sentimental reasons. No one ever drove it. No one would notice it was gone.

The engine turned over with a quiet hum. My heart hammered against my ribs as I guided the car down the long, winding driveway. Every shadow seemed to hold a guard, every rustle of leaves a warning.

But no one stopped me. The massive iron gates of the Blake estate slid open for the unassuming little car, and I drove through without a backward glance.

Freedom tasted like the stale coffee I bought at a 24-hour gas station.

My first stop was a copy shop in a strip mall on the outskirts of the city. The smell of toner and warm paper was strangely comforting. I printed two copies of the rejection application.

I sat in a small café, the printed documents laid out on the table before me. My hand trembled as I picked up a pen. For a moment, I hesitated. This was the final, irreversible step.

Then I thought of the funeral. Of Jossie's triumphant smile. Of Duke's cold, dismissive eyes.

My hand steadied. I signed my name, Kyla Dalton, on the designated line. The script was clear and firm. A declaration of independence.

I sealed one copy in a plain manila envelope. On the front, I wrote a simple instruction in French, a language Eleanor had insisted I learn: Pour l'Alpha Duke Blake. For Alpha Duke Blake. It was a small, final nod to the life I was leaving.

Next, a real estate office. By noon, I had signed a lease for a small, one-bedroom apartment in a secure building downtown. It was tiny compared to my room at the estate, but the key in my hand felt heavier and more valuable than any diamond. It was the key to my own life.

Before heading to my new home, there was one last task. The envelope.

I drove back towards the estate, parking on the public road just outside the gates. I tried calling Duke's personal line. A final, foolish attempt at a clean, direct confrontation.

The call was immediately rerouted.

"Alpha Blake's office, Jossie Cordova speaking." Her voice was sickeningly sweet, laced with professional efficiency.

"Jossie. It's Kyla. I need to speak with Duke."

A small pause. I could almost hear the gears turning in her head. "Oh, Kyla! I'm so sorry, but he's in the middle of a critical international conference call. He'll be tied up all day. Is there a message I can take?"

The condescension in her tone was subtle, but it was there. The gatekeeper, enjoying her power. She would never let me through.

"No," I said, my voice flat. "It's fine. I have something to leave for him." I hung up before she could reply.

My fingers scrolled to the only other Blake-related number I hadn't blocked. Alfred Peterson. The old butler had been at the estate since before Duke was born. He was one of the few people who had always shown me simple, human kindness.

He answered on the second ring. "Miss Dalton?"

"Alfred," I said, my voice softer now. "Could you do me a great favor? Could you meet me at the front gate? I have something for the Alpha."

There was a long silence on the other end. He knew. He must have known I was gone. "Of course, miss," he finally said, his voice heavy.

A few minutes later, his familiar, stooped figure appeared, walking slowly down the driveway. I got out of the car and met him at the gate.

I handed him the envelope. "Please, Alfred. Make sure he gets this. Personally. It's important."

His kind, wrinkled eyes looked from the envelope to my face, then to the backpack visible on the passenger seat of the Honda. He understood. He gave a single, solemn nod. "I will see to it, Miss Kyla."

"Thank you." It was all I could say.

I got back in my car, started the engine, and pulled away, merging into the anonymous flow of traffic. I didn't look back

Narrator:

Alfred Peterson held the manila envelope in his hand, the weight of it feeling far heavier than a few sheets of paper. He turned to head back to the main house, his heart heavy for the young woman who had just driven away.

He found Jossie Cordova waiting for him in the main foyer, as if she had been anticipating his return.

"Alfred," she said, her smile bright and polished. "What's that? A delivery?" Her eyes were fixed on the envelope.

"It is a personal letter for the Alpha, from Miss Dalton," Alfred replied, his tone formal. He made to move past her, towards the Alpha's study.

Jossie stepped into his path, her smile tightening slightly. "The Alpha is handling extremely sensitive pack business right now. All correspondence must be screened by me first to avoid any unnecessary distractions. It's part of my duties."

She held out her hand, her authority as the Alpha's Beta clear in her posture.

Alfred hesitated. He was the head butler, a position of honor, but she was the Alpha's second-in-command. Her orders, in the Alpha's absence, held weight. Reluctantly, he handed over the envelope.

Jossie took it, her fingers brushing his. Her smile returned, full of saccharine sweetness. She glanced at the French script on the front, a small, cold smirk touching her lips. She knew exactly what it said.

She didn't open it. Instead, she turned and walked towards her own office, pulling out her phone. She dialed Duke's number.

When he answered, her voice was a masterpiece of worried concern.

"Duke? It's me. I'm sorry to bother you, I know you're busy, but... it's Kyla." She paused for dramatic effect. "She's... well, she's run off. She left a note for you."

She twisted the truth with surgical precision. A formal, legal document became a 'note'. A decisive act of rejection became a petulant fit of 'running off'.

"She said she needed some space," Jossie continued, her voice dripping with false sympathy. "Perhaps the stress of the funeral was too much for her. Do you think... should you come back?"

She knew he couldn't. She knew he was trapped a thousand miles away. And she knew that by the time he returned, she would have made sure that little 'note' was long gone

Duke POV:

The call from Jossie had been irritating. Kyla had left. Taken a car and gone. According to Jossie, she'd been emotional after the funeral and "needed some space." She'd left a letter.

A letter.

It was childish. Dramatic. But it was Kyla. Soft, emotional, and prone to quiet theatrics. I was out of state, closing a difficult acquisition. I didn't have time for this.

"Let her cool off," I'd told Jossie. "She'll be back when she gets hungry."

The thought of her, alone and vulnerable, sent a brief, unwelcome spike of unease through me. But I pushed it down. She was my Mate. Her place was here. She would return.
