Chapter 3

"Type in the code," I told her, tapping the sticky Formica table of the all-night diner.

Brooke sniffled, staring at the locked cloud drive on her phone screen. "He swore this album was just for us. He told me he kept our ultrasound photos in here."

"He also told you his divorce was finalized," I reminded her. "Type it."

"He said the password was our secret anniversary," Brooke whispered, her voice cracking. "The day we first met at the country club."

"Type it," I repeated. "Unless you want to spend the next eighteen years raising a child with a man who thinks you're a punchline."

Her manicured thumb hovered over the digital keypad. She punched in six digits. A green checkmark flashed, and the encrypted folder burst open.

I pulled the device closer. The first photos showed Dean and Chloe together on trips and in hotel rooms.

"He bought her the Cartier bracelet," Brooke choked out, peeking through her fingers. "The one I asked for last Christmas. He told me it was sold out."

"He bought it with joint funds," I said, my voice steady.

Near the bottom of the grid, the image types changed. They weren't photos anymore. They were screenshots of bank statements.

I tapped the first one to enlarge it.

"Look at this," I said.

Brooke refused to lift her head. "I don't want to see her anymore. I get it, Natalie. You win."

"It's not her," I snapped, my voice hardening. "Look at the screen, Brooke. Stop crying and look."

Brooke forced herself to look at the spreadsheet.

"What is that?" she asked, her voice raspy.

"Wire transfers," I replied, my knuckles turning white against the plastic phone case. "He's moving large sums of cash out of the primary business account."

I swiped to the next image. A registration document for an LLC based in the Cayman Islands. The sole proprietor listed was Dean's brother, Mark.

"Three years ago, I mortgaged my pre-marital apartment," I told Brooke, keeping my tone deadly quiet. "I handed him every cent of that equity to register his consulting firm. Now he's draining the accounts dry before the divorce judge can divide the assets."

"He's stealing your money?"

"He's stealing our money," I corrected. "If he drains the firm and hides his income, both the divorce accounting and your support claim become harder to enforce."

Brooke's hand flew to her stomach. "Can he do that? The lawyers told me he makes seven figures."

"On paper, he does," I explained, swiping to a third screenshot. "But look at the dates. He started moving eighty thousand dollars a week right after I caught him with the lipstick on his collar. He knows the audit is coming."

"He told me he was setting up a trust fund for the baby," Brooke whispered, the realization draining the last bit of color from her face.

"He lied," I said. "He's hiding the money so neither of us can touch it."

I pulled my own phone from my coat pocket.

"Who are you calling?" Brooke asked, panic creeping back into her tone. "It's two in the morning. We should go to the police."

"The police are not the first stop for a disputed marital transfer," I said, dialing the number. "I need counsel who can move before the money does."

The line rang twice before a smooth, calm voice answered. "Natalie."

"I have the proof, Julian," I said, staring at the diner's neon sign buzzing in the window. "He's transferring the corporate funds overseas. I have screenshots of the routing numbers and the shell company names."

"Are the screenshots time-stamped?" Julian asked.

"Yes. All within the last forty-eight hours."

"Where are you?"

"The diner across from the multiplex on 4th Street."

"Order a coffee. Stay put." The line went dead.

I set the phone down.

"You're actually going to destroy him, aren't you?" she asked.

"I'm going to take back what belongs to me," I corrected.

Julian arrived and walked directly to our booth.

"Show me," he demanded, sliding into the vinyl booth beside me.

I handed him Brooke's phone. "The bottom three rows."

Julian ignored the personal photos and focused on the financial screenshots, enlarging the routing numbers and timestamps.

"He's clumsy," Julian muttered, adjusting his silver watch. "Using his brother as a proxy is a rookie mistake. But he's moving fast. Half the liquid capital is already gone."

"Can you freeze the rest?" I asked.

Julian set the phone down on the table. He turned his body toward me, ignoring Brooke completely.

"I can seek a temporary restraining order when the courthouse opens," Julian said. "You need to understand what happens next."

"I understand them just fine," I replied.

"If the judge grants it, extraordinary transfers can be restrained and Dean will be notified. He will know exactly why."

I held his stare. "Good."

"He may retaliate by cutting access, attacking your credibility, or moving through counsel. Once we file, document everything and do not meet him alone."

"I have spent three years backing down," I said, my voice hardening. "I smiled at his corporate dinners. I ironed the shirts he wore to cheat on me. I nodded when he told me the business needed more capital and my apartment was the only way."

Julian searched my eyes, looking for any trace of hesitation.

"I am done enduring him," I stated. "I want him ruined, Julian. I want every dime back."

Something like approval crossed Julian's face, then his professional expression returned.

"Alright," Julian murmured.

He reached into his sleek leather briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of legal paper. He dropped it onto the table, right over the sticky syrup stains.

"Temporary restraining-order application," Julian said. "I drafted it yesterday."

Brooke stared at the papers like they were a loaded gun. "What happens to me?"

Julian finally looked at her. "You hire your own representation, Miss. I only work for Natalie."

He turned back to me. He uncapped a heavy silver fountain pen.

He held it out.

I took the pen from him.

"Sign the bottom line," Julian told me, his voice a low, steady anchor in the chaotic night. "And let me handle the filing."

Brooke's phone buzzed before I touched pen to paper.

She looked down and went pale. "Another transfer. Two hundred fifty thousand dollars."

Julian checked the timestamp. "He is moving the rest now. If you want the court to preserve what remains, sign."

I pressed the metal nib to the paper and signed my name.
