The Champion Who Chose Me After My Fiancé Betrayed Me
Chapter 2
"Sienna! Stop right there!"
Ryan’s voice bounced off the concrete tunnel walls.
Damon halted, his fingers releasing my wrist as we reached the central player staging area. Ahead of us, the wide double doors to the main media lounge stood open. Coaches, locker room attendants, and three starting midfielders were milling around the drink coolers, waiting for the championship press conference to begin.
Ryan sprinted up behind us, breathless, clutching the platinum band I had left on the glass table.
"You took that completely out of context," Ryan panted, stepping between me and the exit. "Emily and I had too many shots after the final whistle. Nothing happened. We stumbled into each other, that's all."
A sharp clatter of designer footwear echoed from the corridor.
Emily marched into the bright tunnel lights, smoothing her silk skirt. She didn't look flustered at all. She looked venomous.
"She knows nothing happened, Ryan," Emily said loudly, drawing the immediate attention of two assistant coaches by the cooler. "She's doing this on purpose. Look at her badge—she’s a reporter. She wants to fabricate a trashy scandal to destroy your transfer to Madrid!"
The players by the lounge door went quiet. Assistant coach Miller lowered his clipboard, staring at us.
"Is that true, Sienna?" Ryan pressed, his tone shifting instantly from defensive to righteous. "You're trying to sabotage my career because your own beat isn't going anywhere?"
A quiet laugh escaped my chest.
Ryan blinked, thrown off by the sound. He had expected tears. He had expected me to scream and run away like I used to whenever he gaslit me about female fans in his direct messages.
"Nothing happened?" I asked.
"Not a damn thing," Ryan lied, his chin lifted high. "You're paranoid."
"Good to know," I said.
I pulled my phone from my blazer pocket and unlocked the screen.
The media lounge wall featured a massive ninety-inch monitor, currently synced to the stadium's local wireless network for game highlights. As an accredited reporter, I had the media room access code saved directly into my settings.
I tapped the screen mirroring widget.
"What are you doing?" Ryan hissed, lunging a step closer.
The monitor flickered. The looping championship graphic cut out, replaced by a crystal-clear high-definition video.
The audio boomed through the overhead speakers before the picture even stabilized.
*“Ryan, what if someone comes in?”* Emily’s voice echoed in pristine surround sound.
*“Nobody’s coming in, babe. Lock the latch.”*
Then came the visual. Ryan’s team jersey unzipped to his navel, his mouth pressed hard against Emily's throat, both hands gripping her bare thighs as she sat spread across the VIP marble bar. Scratch marks ran vividly down the side of his neck.
A plate crashed in the media room.
Every single person in the corridor froze. Coach Miller’s mouth fell open. Two camera operators setting up tripods turned their heads toward the monitor, their eyes widening in shock.
"Shut it off!" Ryan roared, his face turning an ugly shade of purple. He lunged toward me. "Shut it off right now!"
I didn't flinch. I let the video run on loop.
"You bitch!" Ryan screamed, all composure completely shattered. He pointed a trembling, white-knuckled finger at my face. "You just ruined my life! Do you have any idea what this will do to my contract? The sponsors will drop me by midnight!"
"That sounds like a personal problem," I said coldly.
"You ungrateful little parasite!" Ryan spat, veins bulging along his temples. He stepped into my personal space, spewing saliva with every syllable. "Who the hell do you think you are? You're a nobody! You wouldn't even have a press credential in this league if you weren't sleeping with the star striker! You rode my name to get into professional sports, and now you want to burn me down?"
The words were meant to eviscerate me. Three years ago, they might have.
Today, they just proved how small he truly was.
"I built my own career before I ever met you," I answered, my voice steady, slicing through his frantic rage. "I graduated top of my journalism class. I broke three major trade stories while you were still riding the bench in the second division. You didn't make me, Ryan. But you definitely just unmade yourself."
Ryan trembled with fury. He thrust his fist forward, opening his palm to reveal the diamond engagement ring.
"Take your damn ring!" he snapped, trying to shove it into my hands. "Take it, delete the file, and tell the press it was a deepfake! You fix this!"
I took the ring from his open palm.
For a second, relief washed across his sweaty face. He actually thought he had intimidated me.
I turned slightly, looked at the tall blue metal trash bin beside the water station, and dropped the platinum ring right through the opening.
*Clang.*
It hit the empty aluminum soda cans at the bottom with a flat, hollow ring.
"We are done," I said.
Ryan gasped, lunging forward with both hands raised, ready to grab me by the jacket. "You don't walk away from me—"
A mountain of muscle moved between us.
Damon Hayes stepped directly into Ryan’s path, chest hitting chest.
Ryan bounced back two paces, his boots skidding across the slick concrete floor. He looked up, stunned, his eyes meeting Damon's cold gray stare.
"Hayes?" Ryan snarled, his voice cracking with rage. "Stay the hell out of this! This is between me and my fiancée!"
Damon didn't raise his voice. He didn't bare his teeth. He just stood there, towering over him, radiating pure, suffocating authority.
"She isn't your fiancée anymore," Damon said, every word hitting like a hammer. "You gave up that right."
Ryan clenched his fists, but he didn't dare swing. Everyone in the league knew Damon Hayes fought like an animal on the pitch and never backed down off it.
"Get out of my way," Ryan wheezed.
Damon didn't budge an inch. "Try to touch her again, and we won't need a referee to settle this."
I didn't stay to watch the rest of the standoff. I walked past the stunned crowd of reporters and coaches, pushed through the heavy security exit doors, and stepped out into the cool night air.

By nine o'clock the following morning, the sports world had caught fire.
Every major outlet had the footage. The headlines rolled across the bottom of the morning sports broadcasts in bold red lettering:
*CHAMPIONSHIP STRIKER RYAN CALLAHAN CAUGHT IN LOCKER ROOM AFFAIR.*
*MADRID SUSPENDS CONTRACT TALKS AMID ETHICS CODE VIOLATION.*
*TEAM OWNER REVIEWS STRIKER'S CONDUCT FOLLOWING SCANDAL WITH OWNER'S DAUGHTER.*
I sat on the floor of the penthouse living room, surrounding myself with cardboard boxes. My clothes, my books, and my laptop were already packed. Five years of memories, stripped clean from the walls in less than three hours.
My phone buzzed against the hardwood floor.
I expected an angry text from Ryan's agent. Or maybe another panicked voicemail from Emily's lawyers threatening a defamation lawsuit that had zero legal grounds.
Instead, the screen displayed a short message from an unknown number.
*He’s giving a public press conference at noon to blame the media.*
*I have his private phone records from the team hotel.*
*Meet me at the diner across from the training grounds if you want to finish him.*
My pulse kicked up a notch.
I stared at the screen, tapping my thumb against the glass.
There was only one person ruthless enough to send that.
