Chapter 2

My fingers closed around the cold plastic of the master EP headset.

Marcus lunged across the console, his hands grasping for the wire. I sidestepped, letting his own momentum carry him forward. His hip slammed into the edge of the metal desk.

I slipped the earpiece over my head and pulled the microphone down to my mouth.

"Attention all units," I said, my voice sharp and steady. "This is your executive producer."

I slammed my palm against the main audio fader.

The mournful elimination piano track died instantly. Silence crashed over the studio, heavy and suffocating.

Brett Calloway, the chief director, shot up from his swivel chair behind the soundboard. His face drained of color, leaving his skin a sickly, pale gray.

"What the hell are you doing, Vivian?" Brett yelled.

He reached across the sliders to grab my wrist. I didn't flinch. I just stared at his trembling hand until he pulled it back.

"Security is on the way," Brett warned, his voice shaking. "Step away from the board right now."

I ignored him. My eyes scanned the glowing grid of twenty monitors mounted on the wall.

On screen four, the main feed showed Grant standing center stage. He kept his practiced, charming smile pinned in place for the live audience. But his tongue darted out, licking his bottom lip. Once. Twice.

Eleven years of marriage taught me exactly what that meant. He was terrified.

"He's panicking," I said, pointing at the monitor. "Camera three, push in on his face."

"Do not touch that camera!" Brett barked into his own headset.

The camera operator didn't move. Confusion paralyzed the entire floor crew.

"I said step away," Marcus growled, recovering his balance. He stepped into my personal space, trying to use his height to intimidate me. "You have no authority here. You're a fired cast member."

"I have the master override code," I said. My fingers hovered over the keyboard. "And if you touch me, Marcus, I will dump the entire season's raw, unedited footage onto the public server. Every racist joke you made in the green room. Every time you screamed at the interns."

Marcus stopped dead. His jaw tightened, but he took a step back.

I turned my attention back to Brett.

"You spent six months building this narrative," I said to the director. "The nagging, invisible wife holding back the charismatic sports star."

"It polled well," Brett defended, crossing his arms. "The focus groups hated you. You brought no value to the screen."

"Because you edited out every frame of reality," I replied.

I typed a sequence of commands into the terminal. A progress bar appeared on the corner of my screen.

"You sat in this exact chair and deleted the footage of me paying the production invoices," I said. "You cut the scenes of me cooking for the crew when the network check bounced in week three and catering walked out."

"Nobody wants to watch a maid," Marcus sneered from behind me. "They want to watch a star. Grant is the talent."

"Grant is a hollow suit," I said. "I handled every frame of this show. From casting the background extras to approving your lazy edits. I was the ghostwriter who made you both look competent."

"You're delusional," Brett said. He glanced at the door, clearly praying for the guards to arrive. "You were just the housewife."

"Then let's see how the star handles live television without his housewife," I said.

I flipped the toggle switch for the studio's public address system. The red light blinked on.

Down on the stage, Grant raised his hands in a placating gesture.

"Folks, it looks like we're having some technical difficulties," Grant announced, his voice booming through the auditorium. He offered his signature chuckle. "Live television, right? We'll get this sorted out."

"There are no technical difficulties, Grant," I said into my headset.

My voice echoed through the massive speakers suspended above the audience. Four million viewers at home heard it crystal clear.

Grant flinched. His shoulders stiffened.

Theo stepped closer to his father, looking up at the ceiling. "Mom? What are you doing? You're ruining my debut."

"You already read your lines, Theo," I said over the speakers. "Your performance is over."

The audience erupted into loud whispers. A low wave of murmurs washed through the front rows. People leaned forward in their seats.

"Cut her mic!" Grant shouted, abandoning his television persona entirely. He glared at the camera lenses. "Marcus! Brett! Get her out of the booth!"

"They can't," I said.

I typed the final sequence into the keyboard.

"Vivian, please," Marcus tried a different tactic, his tone suddenly dropping into a soothing, negotiated register. "We'll write you a check. Right now. A severance package. Just walk away from the console."

"I don't need your money, Marcus," I said.

"What do you want?" Brett asked. Sweat beaded on his forehead.

"I want my stage."

I pressed my thumb against the heavy red button labeled MAIN DISPLAY.

"Don't do it," Brett pleaded.

I pushed the button down.

The massive LED backdrop behind Grant and Theo flashed a blinding white. The sudden burst of light cast long, sharp shadows across the stage floor.

The audience gasped in unison.

"Turn it off!" Grant yelled, shielding his eyes from the glare.

"Locked out," I said quietly in the booth.

The white glare on the stage screen resolved into a crisp, high-definition document. I had uploaded the PDF to the master server three hours before the broadcast began.

The dense legal text towered twenty feet high behind my husband and son.

"What is that?" Brett asked, leaning closer to the monitor.

"A private loan agreement," I answered.

I tapped the spacebar. The image on the giant stage screen scrolled downward.

The audience fell completely silent. The only sound in the studio was the hum of the air conditioning and the rapid clicking of my keyboard.

I tapped the spacebar one last time. The document zoomed in on the final page.

The signature block expanded until it filled the entire LED backdrop.

Grant's messy, unmistakable scrawl sat boldly on the bottom line, dated exactly six months ago.

On monitor four, Grant slowly turned around to look at the screen behind him. His perfect, practiced smile vanished completely.
