Chapter 3

My palm cracked against the manila folder. The sharp smack echoed through the living room, cutting off Lena's question.

Lena yanked her hand back, her manicured fingers curling inward. "Geez, Addie. Touchy."

"Out," I ordered.

Julian stepped forward, his eyes darting between my hand and the document. "What is that? Why does it say Mercer?"

"It says get out of my apartment," I replied, sliding the folder off the glass table and pressing it against my chest.

"You're being ridiculous," Julian scoffed. He grabbed Lena's arm, pulling her toward the entryway. "Fine. Pout. Throw your little fit. But I expect you to call my mother by tonight and apologize for embarrassing the Cade family."

"I won't be calling your mother."

"Yes, you will," he insisted, his tone hardening. "Because my family is the only reason you have any standing in this city. Don't forget that."

He pulled the door open. Lena offered me a sickly sweet wave before stepping into the hall.

The door slammed shut, rattling the picture frames on the wall.

Silence rushed in, heavy and suffocating. I walked down the hall to my bedroom and locked the door behind me.

I sat on the edge of the mattress and opened the folder. My fingertips traced the raised gold seal on the $30,000,000 anonymous equity agreement, the exact sum I had wired three years ago to save the Cade Group from total bankruptcy. Julian still worshipped his mystery shareholder, unaware that the woman he treated like a charity case controlled his empire.

I closed the folder and shoved it into the bottom drawer of my nightstand.

At nine o'clock the next morning, the buzzer echoed through my kitchen.

I ignored it, pouring a cup of black coffee.

The buzzer rang again, longer this time. Then my cell phone vibrated on the granite counter. Julian's name flashed across the screen.

I pressed the intercom button. "Yes?"

"Let me up, Adeline," Julian's voice crackled through the speaker.

"We have nothing to talk about."

"The press is outside my office. Let me up."

I pressed the unlock button. He needed to hear this one last time, completely sober and without his audience.

When I opened the front door, Julian pushed past me. He wore a fresh navy suit, his hair perfectly styled, looking every bit the untouchable CEO. He didn't look like a man whose wedding had imploded yesterday. He looked annoyed.

"My parents fielded calls from investors until midnight," Julian started, pacing the length of my living room. "The board is demanding answers. I told them you had a severe migraine and the ceremony is postponed."

"You lied to them."

"I protected you," he corrected, stopping to face me. "I protected us. Five years, Adeline. We have built a life together. You are not throwing it away over a prank."

I leaned against the doorframe, holding my coffee mug. "It wasn't a prank. It was a statement. And you agreed with it."

"Lena is just a friend."

"She wore a wedding dress to our rehearsal dinner, Julian."

"It was ivory," he countered, rolling his eyes in exasperation. "And she spilled wine on her original outfit. You are obsessed with finding reasons to hate her."

"Did you ever take my compromises seriously?" I asked, keeping my voice level.

Julian frowned. "What are you talking about?"

"Every time I stepped aside," I said, setting the mug on the console table. "Every time I stayed quiet to keep the peace. When she crashed our anniversary trip. When she called you at two in the morning because she was sad. Did you value any of my patience?"

Julian adjusted his cuffs, his expression hardening. "I valued your support. That's what a partner does. They support the Cade family. You knew what you were signing up for when you agreed to marry me. We are public figures."

"You are a public figure," I corrected. "I am just the woman you thought would smile for the cameras."

"You're the woman I elevated," he snapped, closing the distance between us. He pointed a finger at my chest. "Do you have any idea how many women would kill to be in your position? To have the Cade name? My family gave you a place in high society. We gave you a future."

I stared at his pointed finger. The sheer audacity of his words settled over me, cold and absolute. I had funded his future. I had handed his family the very security he now claimed they had given me.

But I said nothing. Not yet.

The truth would land harder once he had nowhere left to dismiss it.
