Audrey POV

"Who is Mira?" I demanded, shoving the cracked screen of my phone toward the driver's seat.

Rhys hit the brakes. The bridal sedan skidded onto the gravel behind a rusted diner. He threw the gearshift into park and killed the engine.

"Give me the name," I repeated.

He pulled his device from his inner pocket, tapped the screen twice, and held it out.

I took the phone. A hospital finance portal filled the display. Hudson Cancer Center. Patient: Mira Calder. Beneath the treatment estimate, a red status bar flashed: Pending Private Guaranty Renewal. The uncovered balance for her CAR-T treatment and follow-up care was four hundred eighty thousand dollars.

"Eighteen months ago," Rhys said, his voice stripped of inflection, "your father learned my sister's insurance would not cover the full treatment package. He signed a private guaranty through one of his foundations. The condition was that your wedding to Julian proceeded without a public disruption."

I stared at the balance. "Gideon tied your sister's treatment financing to my obedience."

"He called it risk management," Rhys said. "Every time he thought I might tell you about Celeste, he threatened to withdraw the next guaranty payment before it was due."

I tossed the phone onto the dashboard. I didn't offer sympathy. I didn't forgive him.

"The Hamptons charity event was two years ago," I stated, watching the muscle in his jaw flex. "That was twenty-four months ago, Rhys. Six months before my father ever made that threat."

He stared straight through the windshield.

"Why did you delete the twenty-three seconds of security footage back then?" I asked.

Silence filled the cabin. The ticking of the cooling engine marked the seconds.

"I thought Julian would end it," Rhys finally answered.

My hands gripped the edges of my torn lace bodice. The initial cover-up hadn't been a desperate bid to save his sister. It was pure, unadulterated loyalty to his best friend. He had chosen Julian over me long before Gideon forced his hand.

We abandoned the vehicle and walked three blocks to a faded Hudson Valley motel. The neon sign sputtered, casting a sickly pink glow over the asphalt. A piece of cardboard taped to the front window advertised one vacancy: the honeymoon suite.

Inside the cramped bathroom, I grabbed a pair of rusted tailor shears from the complimentary sewing kit on the vanity. I gripped the mud-soaked tulle of my skirt and hacked at the fabric. Slabs of heavy white lace hit the cracked linoleum, severing the last physical tie to the cathedral.

I dropped the shears into the sink. "Unbutton the back."

Rhys stepped behind me. I watched him in the water-spotted mirror. He raised his hands, his knuckles brushing the silk, carefully avoiding the bare skin of my spine. He slipped the first pearl through the tight loop. Then the second.

At the third button, his fingers stopped moving.

"Last night in the elevator," I said, keeping my gaze locked on his reflection. "Did you shove me away out of loyalty to Julian, fear of my father, or because you wanted to keep the kiss as your own secret?"

Rhys met my eyes in the glass. "All three."

"Be specific."

"Mostly selfishness," he admitted, his voice rough. "I wanted you to catch him. But I wanted you to find out late enough that the fallout would force you to rely on me."

I stepped forward, breaking his proximity instantly. "Stop touching me."

Reaching over my shoulder, I yanked the fabric hard. The last two pearl buttons tore loose, clattering loudly against the porcelain basin. They circled the drain and stopped.

A heavy fist pounded against the thin door.

I opened it to find the motel owner standing in the hallway, holding a vintage Polaroid camera. He glanced at my ruined, knee-length dress, then at Rhys’s wrinkled suit.

"I saw the livestream," the man said, a greasy smile stretching across his unshaven face. "I don't call the cops on runaway brides. But you owe me a picture for the honeymoon wall."

"No," Rhys snapped. He moved to shut the door.

I reached around Rhys and grabbed the lapels of his jacket. I yanked him backward into the room, spinning him toward the lens.

"Take it," I ordered the owner.

I pulled Rhys down by his collar. I didn't give him time to pull away or argue. I pressed the corner of my mouth precisely against the corner of his.

Rhys tensed. His large hand shot out, clamping firmly onto my bare lower back to steady us. His palm burned against my skin, grounding me in the chaotic moment.

The flash blinded me.

The second the harsh light faded, Rhys dropped his hand and stepped away, putting three feet of distance between us.

The owner shook the developing square. "Perfect. I'll print a backup for the internet."

He shut the door, leaving us in the quiet room.

I stared at the glossy square he left on the dresser. The image solidified rapidly. Me, in a hacked-up wedding gown, clinging to the best man. It looked infinitely more authentic than any photo taken at the altar.

My phone chimed on the mattress. A financial alert. Voss stock had plummeted eleven percent in pre-market trading. The lenders had just initiated a forty-eight-hour reputation review. The public narrative had shifted entirely from a medical emergency to a scandalous elopement.

"You sleep in the bathtub," I told Rhys, throwing a thin pillow toward the open bathroom door.

I dragged the heavy wooden desk chair across the carpet and wedged it firmly under the brass doorknob. Sitting on the edge of the sagging mattress, I opened my banking app. I bypassed the frozen Aster House accounts and accessed my separate personal emergency fund.

Using the guarantor link already open on Rhys's phone, I sent one month's treatment deposit from my personal emergency account. The portal generated a receipt in his name as the authorized family contact. I didn't tell him. I refused to let medical debt remain a leash around either of us.

At two in the morning, a harsh vibration rattled the floorboards.

I slipped out of bed and pushed the bathroom door open an inch.

Rhys sat in the dry, yellowed tub, his long legs bent awkwardly against the porcelain. He wasn't asleep. His head rested against the tiled wall, and his fingers traced a small, torn strip of white mesh.

It was the piece of my veil that had snagged on the service elevator doors last night. He had kept it. The white fabric wrapped tightly around his knuckles, betraying the rigid control he had shown when he refused to touch my back.

The phone resting on the sink buzzed again. The caller ID glowed brightly in the dark room: Gideon.

I pushed the door fully open, walked straight to the counter, and hit the speaker button.

My father's voice sliced through the damp air. "Bring her back to New York, Rhys. Or I revoke the next treatment guaranty before eight a.m."

Rhys lifted his head, his dark eyes locking onto mine.

On the wall above the mirror, the red digital clock clicked to 2:01.
