Chapter 1

Ten minutes before my wedding, I found my fiancé pinning my manager against the chapel sink.

Julian still wore the cuff links I had given him.

Celeste still held my emergency lipstick in one hand.

Rhys, Julian’s best man, dragged me away before I could record them.

He took my phone and told me forty-eight seconds of rage could destroy my company, my father, and a patient I had never met.

So I walked down the aisle.

I repeated every vow while Julian smiled like he had not tasted another woman’s mouth.

When the officiant told him to kiss me, I stepped back.

I caught Rhys by his black tie.

“You hid his affair for two years.”

Julian’s smile vanished.

“Then you can finish his honeymoon.”

“Audrey, let go.”

“Give me back my phone.”

“Not here.”

“Fine.”

“What are you doing?”

“Stealing the best man.”

Audrey POV

"Too bright," Celeste muttered, dragging a dry tissue roughly across my mouth.

She tossed the crumpled paper onto the vanity and tapped my phone screen, killing the volume. Ten minutes remained until the organist started playing.

I stared at her reflection in the mirror. A dusting of white lily pollen clung to her bare collarbone, matching the exact shade and species of the boutonniere pinned to Julian's lapel.

The diamond bracelet on my wrist pressed into a ring of fading red marks. I had traded my freedom for a corporate promise: Aster House would remain operationally independent if I completed the wedding weekend and signed the civil packet after the reception. The escrow transfer would then activate at nine o'clock Monday morning. Until then, eight percent of my shares and forty-two brand contracts sat inside a conditional trust Gideon could still weaponize.

My silenced phone lit up on the table. A text from Gideon.

"Don't make me freeze your trust a second time."

My father knew exactly how to pin my obedience and the wedding's purpose to the wall with a single sentence.

"I'll go confirm the final timeline with the groom," Celeste said, checking her watch.

She turned away, slipping a silver hotel master key into her clutch. An agent and bridesmaid had no use for a spare room key during the ceremony prep.

I didn't call out to my security detail. I gathered the heavy silk of my skirt and followed her down the carpeted hallway toward the small private chapel.

The heavy oak door stood slightly ajar, letting a sliver of yellow light spill onto the stone floor.

"Once the merger lands, I'll end all this," Julian's voice drifted through the narrow gap.

I pushed the wood flat against the wall.

Julian had Celeste pinned against the edge of the porcelain sink. His mouth was on hers, his hands gripping her waist. The silver cufflink on his left wrist pressed deep into the pink fabric of her bridesmaid dress.

In her right hand, Celeste still clutched my emergency lipstick.

Julian lifted his head. He didn't jump back. He didn't even drop his hands.

"You shouldn't have left the lounge," he said.

"Is that your version of an apology?" I asked, my voice flat.

"Today you are a Whitmore daughter first," Julian said, straightening his dark lapels. "An injured fiancée second."

Celeste smoothed her collar. She flashed the exact media-trained smile I had spent weeks teaching her to use for the press.

"It's just a misread, Audrey," she said smoothly. "Pre-wedding panic."

I raised my phone and aimed the camera at them.

A large hand clamped over my wrist from behind, yanking my arm down with bruising force. Broad fingers pried the device straight out of my grip.

Rhys Calder—Julian's best man, oldest friend, and Voss general counsel.

He stepped past me, his wide shoulders blocking the exit.

"Go to the altar," Rhys told Julian.

Julian shot me a warning glance and slipped out the side door, dragging Celeste with him.

Rhys dropped my phone into his suit pocket. "If that footage leaks right now, your company dies before the wedding does."

He reached out and adjusted my lace shawl, pulling the fabric over my bare shoulders.

Sharp cedar hit my nose. The exact same scent that filled the service elevator last night.

I had kissed him for eleven seconds in that cramped space. He had shoved me back into the hallway, his chest heaving.

"Go through with the wedding tomorrow," Rhys had told me then.

Now, he was using the exact same sentiment to force me down the aisle.

"How long?" I asked, staring at the hard line of his jaw. "How long have you been hiding her for him?"

"Long enough," Rhys answered.

He kept his thumb clamped over the side button of my phone through his pocket fabric, as if he could dictate exactly when I was allowed to be angry.

I reached up and wiped the last smear of pink off my mouth. I didn't cry. I didn't turn around and cancel the event.

"Drop the veil," I commanded.

He hesitated, then pulled the sheer tulle over my face, masking my expression in a layer of white fog.

"Since you both need me to walk down that aisle," I whispered through the mesh, "don't blame me for how the ceremony ends."

Hundreds of guests filled the cathedral. Live broadcast cameras tracked my every step down the red carpet.

I stood beneath the vaulted ceiling and recited the vows word for word, my tone even and flawless.

Julian extended his hand for the ring.

A single strand of Celeste's blonde hair clung to his silver cufflink.

I held the gold band a millimeter from his knuckle. I let the silence stretch for one agonizing second, watching the muscles in his neck tighten. Then I pushed it all the way down. I gave them all the illusion of perfect control.

The officiant smiled warmly. "You may now kiss the bride."

I stepped backward.

Julian leaned in, his lips meeting empty air.

I turned on my heel, reached out, and grabbed the black silk tie of the best man. I yanked Rhys forward, forcing him to stumble into the center of the altar.

"Since you hid it for him for two years," I announced, my voice echoing through the cathedral microphones, "you can finish the honeymoon for him."

Julian's polished smile vanished.

In the front row, Gideon bolted to his feet, his face flushing crimson.

I didn't let go of Rhys's tie. I dragged him off the altar and shoved through the heavy side doors before the security guards could react to my father's shouts.

Under the bright sunlight, my wrist flashed. The smartwatch screen displayed a pulsing red waveform.

My phone sat in Rhys's pocket, but every word spoken at the altar, and every confession made in the chapel, was already syncing to the Aster House cloud.

I shoved Rhys into the passenger side of the idling bridal car and threw myself into the driver's seat.

The locks engaged with a sharp clack.

Rhys gripped the leather dashboard as I slammed my foot on the gas, tearing away from the curb.

I shoved my wrist right into his line of sight, the red audio wave jumping with every ragged breath in the cabin.

"Now tell me," I demanded, steering the heavy vehicle with one hand. "Who exactly were you keeping secrets for these past two years?"

Rhys stared at the glowing red lines on the screen.

His Adam's apple bobbed.

"Not Julian."
