Chapter 2

"You're packing paper instead of jewelry, Delphine."

Sloane Whitlock stood in the doorway of my study. Her stilettos sank into the thick Persian rug, her arms crossed tightly over her tailored trench coat.

My fingers gripped the cold leather cover of the second logbook. I shoved it down into the cardboard box, pressing my weight against the warped pages to make room.

"Jewelry depreciates," I said, grabbing the third notebook from the mahogany drawer. "Data doesn't."

"Marcus is currently at The Neon Room popping champagne, bragging about his new management team," Sloane said, stepping further into the room. "And you're boxing up old notebooks."

"I'm boxing up his entire playbook," I corrected.

I grabbed the next one. Then the next. I stacked them one by one. Fifteen years of sweat, fractures, and negotiations filled the two cardboard cubes. Exactly forty-two journals. They held Marcus's hamstring recovery curves, Jordan's protein-to-weight ratios, and the margins of every contract loophole I had ever exploited to build their empire.

"You're leaving the Rolexes in the safe?" Sloane asked, trailing her hand along the edge of my empty desk.

"Marcus bought those to make himself look rich," I said, tossing a faded blue binder into the box. "I bought these notebooks to make him rich. There's a difference."

"He thinks you're walking away empty-handed," she noted.

"He thinks Kelly is a genius," I replied.

I grabbed the final logbook, a thick black ledger from Jordan's rookie camp, and dropped it into the second box. It landed with a dull thud.

"Help me carry these to the kitchen," I told her.

Sloane grabbed the lighter box. We walked down the hallway. The silence of the massive house pressed in on us. The front door remained shut. Marcus and Jordan had already left to celebrate my replacement.

We set the boxes on the marble island. The kitchen still smelled like the citrus cleaner the maid used that morning.

Next to my meal prep containers sat the divorce papers. The bold text of the termination notice stared back at me.

Sloane pulled her iPad from her leather tote bag. She tapped the screen twice and slid the device across the island, stopping it right next to the legal documents.

"The twenty-million-dollar settlement electronic receipt," Sloane said, her voice dropping to a low, tight register. "Transferred and cleared."

I glanced at the glowing numbers on the tablet. The buyout for my original seed money in Marcus's brand.

"Kelly thought she found a spousal conflict of interest loophole," I said, tracing the edge of the tablet.

"She did," Sloane replied, a sharp smile forming on her lips. "But she didn't realize you structured the LLC under a blind trust three years ago. They couldn't freeze your accounts if they tried. Marcus just wired away half his liquid assets, thinking he was paying off a minor corporate penalty."

"He never read the fine print," I said. "He only looked at the bottom line."

"Kelly thinks she won the lottery," Sloane said, leaning against the marble island. "She gets the star athlete, the prodigy son, and the agency."

"She gets the facade," I corrected. "Marcus's knee is one bad tackle away from a career-ending blowout. Jordan lacks discipline. I managed their flaws. Kelly just bought their hype."

"She'll figure it out soon enough."

"By then, they won't be my problem."

"Are you really not leaving a single word for them?" Sloane asked, nodding toward the stack of blank sticky notes by the fruit bowl.

I let out a short, hollow laugh. The sound startled even me, bouncing off the tile backsplash. No tears. Just dry amusement.

"What would I say?" I asked, looking from the sticky notes to the divorce papers. "Good luck with your macros? Don't forget to ice your knee?"

I shook my head.

I reached for the silver fountain pen resting on top of the divorce agreement. I uncapped it and pressed the nib against the signature line. The black ink flowed smoothly over the white paper. I spelled out my name. My wrist stayed perfectly steady. The pen tip didn't tremble once.

"You're handling this entirely too well," Sloane observed, watching me cap the pen. "Most wives would be smashing the china."

"I had a three-day head start to process the betrayal," I said.

"You knew before today?"

"Three days ago," I said, leaning against the cold stone counter. "Kelly walked into this exact room. She brought a bottle of Laurent-Perrier and a commission structure chart. She claimed she wanted to discuss a joint venture for the upcoming season."

"And Marcus?"

"He poured the drinks," I said. "But it was the way he looked at her when she handed him the glass. His eyes lingered on her hand. He didn't look at her like a business partner, Sloane. He looked at her like a co-conspirator. Like someone he had already made promises to."

"You didn't confront him?"

"I observed," I corrected. "I watched them exchange glances over the rim of their glasses. It wasn't a spur-of-the-moment affair. It was a long-laid trap. They had been planning this coup for months."

"And Jordan?" Sloane asked, her tone softening slightly. "He's your son, Del."

"My son sold his loyalty for a varsity spot and a sports car," I said, my jaw tightening. "Kelly bought my family. Now, I'm cashing out."

I grabbed the edges of the heavier cardboard box.

"Let me take that one," Sloane offered, reaching out.

"I carry my own weight," I told her, lifting the box off the marble.

I walked past her, pushing through the side door that led to the garage. The cavernous space felt entirely too large. Marcus's spots were empty. Only my slate-gray SUV sat in the shadows.

I hit the button on my key fob. The trunk lifted with a mechanical hum, exposing the empty cargo space.

I shoved the first box deep inside. Sloane walked up behind me and handed over the second box. I pushed it in next to the first. The cardboard scraped roughly against the carpeted floorboards.

I reached up and grabbed the handle of the trunk lid. I yanked it down hard.

The metal latch slammed shut. The sharp clank echoed through the empty concrete garage, ringing out in the quiet space. The sound hung in the air, a heavy, final punctuation mark on a fifteen-year marriage.

I stood there for a second, staring at the closed trunk. The silence of the house behind me felt absolute. No more meal prep. No more midnight contract reviews. Just me and forty-two notebooks of data.

"They think you're done," Sloane said, breaking the quiet. "Marcus told the league reporters you're retiring to focus on wellness."

"Let him control the narrative for now," I said, opening the driver's side door. "Arrogance breeds mistakes."

"You're going to destroy them, aren't you?"

"I'm going to outplay them," I corrected, sliding into the leather seat. "There's a difference."

Sloane gave a single nod. She stepped back into the house and shut the door.

I hit the ignition. The engine roared to life, vibrating through the steering wheel.

I shifted the car into reverse, my eyes flicking to the dashboard display.

The car phone screen lit up, cutting through the shadows of the garage.

A text message from Sloane popped onto the center panel.

"The seller of that bankrupt team agreed to see you, but only gave you 48 hours."
