Chapter 2

The frigid Manhattan air hit Gwen's flushed cheeks like a slap, a welcome shock to her system. She stumbled out of the Neon Club's entrance, the heavy bass fading behind her, replaced by the distant wail of a siren and the hum of city traffic. She just wanted to disappear, to melt into the anonymous shadows of the city.

"Gwen, wait!"

A hand grabbed her wrist. Ivan. His touch was clammy and desperate. The familiar revulsion, the precursor to her haphephobia, coiled in her gut. For years, she had tolerated his touch, endured it. Now, it felt like being grabbed by something unclean.

She ripped her arm away with a strength she didn't know she possessed. The motion was fluid, primal. Her hand swung in a wide arc, and the crack of her palm connecting with his cheek was sharp and satisfyingly loud in the night air.

Ivan staggered back, his hand flying to his face. The feigned look of remorse he'd been wearing vanished, replaced by a snarl of pure, ugly rage. "You bitch!"

Blair came clattering out of the club behind him, her red dress askew. She rushed to Ivan's side, playing the part of the concerned peacemaker. "Gwen, don't! You shouldn't have hit him."

Gwen let out a harsh, broken laugh. She pointed a trembling finger at Blair. "You can have him," she said, her voice dripping with contempt. "Enjoy my leftovers. You seem to like picking up my trash."

Ivan's face contorted. He raised his hand, ready to strike back.

But before his hand could move, a shrill, piercing ring cut through the tension. It was Gwen's phone, buried deep in her purse. The sound was frantic, insistent.

She took a step back, her hand fumbling inside her bag. She pulled out the phone. The screen glowed with a name: Mr. Hayes. Laura's high school English teacher. Why was he calling her at this hour?

She swiped to answer, her thumb clumsy and shaking. "Hello?"

"Ms. Morrison? This is Mark Hayes from Northwood High." His voice was tight with panic. "There's been an incident. It's Laura. She collapsed during drama rehearsal. An ambulance is taking her to Metropolitan General Hospital. She had some kind of... cardiac event."

The blood drained from Gwen's face. The sounds of the city, Ivan's angry shouts, Blair's fake whimpers-it all faded into a dull, distant roar. The phone slipped from her grasp, and she barely caught it before it hit the concrete.

Laura. Her little sister. The only family she had left.

She didn't look at Ivan again. She didn't even register his existence. She turned and ran, sprinting toward the street, her arms waving wildly at the river of yellow cabs.

A taxi screeched to a halt inches from her. She yanked the door open and threw herself inside.

"Metropolitan General Hospital! Now! Please, hurry!" she screamed at the driver, her voice cracking.

The cab lurched into the congested flow of traffic. Gwen stared unseeing at the blur of city lights. Her hands were clenched so tightly in her lap that her nails bit into her palms, drawing blood. She could feel the faint, crescent-shaped scars from a hundred other moments of panic.

After their parents died in that horrific car crash, it had just been the two of them. Gwen had become a parent at nineteen, working two jobs to put herself through accounting school while making sure Laura never missed a meal, never felt the true weight of their loss. Laura was her reason for everything. Her weakness. Her entire world.

The taxi slammed to a stop in front of the emergency room entrance. Gwen threw a fifty-dollar bill onto the front seat. "Keep the change!" she yelled, scrambling out of the car before it had even fully stopped.

The ER was a chaotic symphony of beeping machines, hurried footsteps, and hushed, anxious voices. She ran to the triage desk, gasping for breath. "My sister. Laura Morrison. She was just brought in."

A nurse with tired eyes checked her computer, her expression grim. She led Gwen down a long, sterile corridor to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. "She's in here. The doctor will be out to speak with you shortly."

Through a large glass window, Gwen saw her. Laura. She looked so small and fragile in the oversized hospital bed, a tangle of wires and tubes connecting her to a bank of monitors that beeped and flashed in a terrifying, life-sustaining rhythm. Her face was pale, her chest unnervingly still.

Gwen's legs gave out. She sagged against the wall, a raw, guttural sob tearing from her throat. The tears she hadn't shed for Ivan and Blair now came in a hot, blinding flood.

A man in a white coat, his face etched with professional concern, approached her, holding a clipboard. "Ms. Morrison? I'm Dr. Evans."

She wiped her eyes, struggling to compose herself. "Is she... will she be okay?"

Dr. Evans's expression was somber. "Laura's congenital heart condition... there's been a severe rejection of her previous valve graft. Her heart is failing, Ms. Morrison. She needs a full transplant and reconstructive surgery. Urgently."

"Then do it," Gwen begged, grabbing his sleeve. "Whatever it costs, just do it. Now."

He sighed, his gaze softening with pity. "This is a highly complex procedure. The best person in the country, arguably the world, for this kind of surgery is Dr. Colt Turner. He's affiliated with this hospital."

Hope flared in Gwen's chest. "Then call him! Get him here!"

"I'm afraid it's not that simple," the doctor said gently. "Dr. Turner's surgical schedule is booked solid for the next two years. There's a waiting list a mile long."

Just then, a nurse approached and handed Gwen a sheaf of papers. It was a preliminary estimate of costs. Gwen's eyes scanned the page, her vision blurring as she tried to count the zeroes. The number was staggering. Obscene. Enough to buy a house.

Her hand trembled as she read the fine print. Because Laura's condition was pre-existing, her insurance would cover only a tiny fraction of the total.

She pulled out her phone, her fingers fumbling as she opened her banking app. The balance displayed on the screen was a cruel joke. It wasn't even enough to cover the first line item on the bill.

The hope that had flickered moments before was extinguished, plunged into an abyss of absolute despair. The weight of it was crushing, a physical pressure that stole the air from her lungs. She slid down the cold, sterile wall until she was sitting on the floor, her head in her hands.

She had no one. No family to call, no savings to fall back on. Ivan had drained their joint account for his stupid startup. Blair was... gone. She was utterly, completely alone.

And then, a memory pierced through the fog of her despair. Ivan's voice, in that dark, sleazy booth. gift-wrap Gwen for that big shot at Crawford's firm...

Gwen's head snapped up. Her tears stopped. An idea, terrible and desperate, began to form in the ruins of her mind. She didn't know who this "big shot" was. She didn't care.

She knew what Ivan had intended to sell. And in this moment of total desperation, she realized it was the only asset she had left.

She wiped her face with the back of her hand, a new, chilling resolve hardening her expression. She got to her feet, her movements stiff but steady. She was going to find him. She was going to make a deal.
