The Billionaire's Substitute Wife Demands Divorce Novel Cover

The Billionaire's Substitute Wife Demands Divorce

For three years, I believed my billionaire husband Hartwell loved me, despite his strange obsession with dressing me in cornflower blue. Then an anonymous text called me a pathetic substitute for a dead woman. I broke into his locked attic and found a life-sized portrait of Georgia Freeman, his dead lover, who looked exactly like me. My entire marriage was a lie. When I rebelled by wearing another color, Hartwell tore the clothes off my body in disgust. His elite family knew all along, mocking me as a clueless stand-in chosen to replace a ghost. So I shredded every blue silk gown, threw his sapphire down the trash chute, and declared I would never bear a substitute child. Watching the color drain from his terrified face, I knew I would destroy his perfect illusion.

Chapter 3

The apartment was silent. Hartwell was already gone. He hadn't left her customary cup of coffee. Just his own used mug—a cold, dark ring of liquid at the bottom.

The shredded magenta robe still lay on the bedroom floor, a garish wound on the cream carpet.

A coldness had settled deep in Ellie's bones. She picked up the ruined silk—limp, lifeless—and dropped it into the trash with a sense of finality.

She tried calling him. Voicemail.

She sent a text. Why were you so angry last night? We need to talk.

Two blue checkmarks appeared. Read.

No reply.

The silence was a weapon. Deliberate. Calculated. Designed to make her feel small. It was working.

Around noon, her phone buzzed. Her heart lurched—hoping it was him.

It wasn't.

Same unknown number.

The new message was more chilling than the first.

"Believe me now? He's in love with a ghost. You can't compete with a dead woman. Check the attic on the top floor. That's where he keeps his heart locked away."

A dead woman. The attic.

Nausea hit her in a wave.

She knew the attic existed. A small, unassuming door at the end of the upstairs hallway led to a steep set of stairs. When she'd asked about it once, Hartwell had been dismissive: "Just some old furniture from the previous owner. I have the only key."

At the time, she hadn't thought twice.

Now, his explanation reeked of lies. Why would a modern penthouse, stripped and redesigned to his exacting standards, have a space full of someone else's junk? And why secure it with an old-fashioned brass key lock, not integrated into their state-of-the-art security system?

The need to know became a burning obsession. It consumed every other thought.

She left her clinic early. She began her search in his study—his desk, the bookshelves, the pockets of jackets in his private closet.

Nothing.

Everything was meticulously organized—except a single drawer in his antique mahogany desk. Locked. Small digital keypad.

Her fingers trembled as she typed. Their anniversary. Access Denied. His birthday. Access Denied. Her birthday. Access Denied.

She went to the hallway and stood before the attic door. Solid oak. Imposing. The keyhole looked like a dark, accusing eye. She tried a bobby pin, then a credit card. Laughably inept. The lock was more complex than it looked.

Defeated, she leaned her forehead against the cool wood. A faint smell seeped through the cracks—dry, dusty, and something sharper. Chemical.

Turpentine.

Her work phone rang, startling her. Claire, voice tight with panic.

"Dr. Sullivan, it's Mrs. Sterling. She's here, at the clinic. She's having a complete breakdown."

Ellie squeezed her eyes shut, forcing the locked door from her mind. "What happened?"

"Her husband, Nathan Sterling, served her with divorce papers this morning. The mistress, Sloane Slate, is pregnant."

The details of someone else's marital disaster felt surreal. Ellie pressed her fingers to her temples. She had to compartmentalize. This was her job. The one area of her life where she was still in control.

"Claire, listen to me," she said, her voice shifting—calm, authoritative. "Get Mrs. Sterling a glass of water. Tell her not to cry. Tell her not to call her husband. Tell her to go home and act as if nothing has happened."

"What? Dr. Sullivan, she's hysterical. He's leaving her."

A grim, humorless smile touched Ellie's lips. "Tell her to trust me. I'm going to make her husband beg her not to leave him."

She ended the call and looked one last time at the attic door. The irony was a physical weight in her chest. She could orchestrate the salvation of another woman's marriage, manipulate emotions and leverage secrets with surgical precision—yet she couldn't even open a locked door in her own home.

But she would.

She walked to her bedroom, her steps heavy with a new resolve. She began to change into her armor: tailored suit, understated jewelry, the cool professional mask of Dr. Ellie Sullivan.

She would win her clients' battles first.

Then she would come back and fight her own.

And this time, she would burn the cage to the ground.
